Anaconda

Anaconda is great for academic and private organizations that cannot afford more expensive Python/R package managers. Also, it is more appropriate for intermediate to advanced Python users--Anaconda can be somewhat frustrating for beginners, as it takes some practice to get comfortable with the workflow. I find it particularly useful for working in teams, because if everyone uses the same package manager, it is easier to troubleshoot issues and makes for reproducible research. For wealthier organizations, a premium package management system (with tech support) would be ideal. Anaconda is also great for people working independently on code development.

Gephi

Gephi is wonderfully suited for research and conducting follow-up social network analysis that GIS is too cumbersome for. It is less-well-suited for spatial statistical modeling, which is easier in programs like GeoDA, Stata, R, and GIS.

Pros

Anaconda

  • Installing packages is very easy with Anaconda. Anaconda comes with 'anaconda navigator', a terminal-like utility from which you can easily install R packages and python libraries.
  • Launching R and python IDEs as well as Jupyter notebooks from anaconda navigator is simple, and Anaconda makes it very easy to keep these packages up-to-date.
  • I really like the fact that if you don't want to install the full version of Anaconda, you can opt to install a lightweight version (called Miniconda) that includes less python libraries and only core conda. I've installed it when I didn't want to take up as much disk space as Anaconda requires, but it works just the same.

Gephi

  • Gephi has a very easy interface to use and get to the tools you need quickly. Without much training or learning, it's pretty simple to figure out.
  • The data import process is very easy in CSV format and the software produces a graph automatically once the correct data is loaded and mapped together (edges and nodes).
  • The visualization is very easy to edit, drag around, and customize. There is flexibility to change the size and color of nodes and edges to represent various characteristics of the graph.

Cons

Anaconda

  • Requires dedicated administration.
  • Expensive.
  • Removes some control from end-users (analysts).

Gephi

  • At one point, there was an issue with files built in earlier builds not working in newer builds. I typically like to update products as soon as updates are available, but i wound up having to run separate version of Gephi if i wanted to check out what was new. Any models built in prior versions would then have to be recreated in newer versions if I wanted to leverage new features.
  • Documentation; you can never have enough of it. Since much of the product is being built by a variety of contributors, it's hard to document how all the features and plug-ins work. It would be great if the the Gephi team could find a body of resources to manage some sort of global product documentation. There are plenty of 3rd party videos and documents online, however, that do cover some of the specifics.

It's really good at data processing, but needs to grow more in publishing in a way that a non-programmer can interact with. It also introduces confusion for programmers that are familiar with normal Python processes which are slightly different in Anaconda such as virtualenvs.

While Gephi isn't perfect, it's a powerful tool for mathematical graph modelling that's hard to find in other products, particularly by way of its interface. It grants non-software developers access to a point-and-click way of creating accurate, beautiful visualizations that would normally take hours in other applications. The fact that it allows for live streaming data is also something that's hard to come by, at least for visualization software

Usability

Anaconda

It's really good at installing and getting started. It's less usable and configurable after that. If you stay in the ecosystem, and don't know how to Python any other way - it works really well.

Gephi is very intuitive and the fact that it shows its process helps the user understand what's going on. However, the animation features can really slow it down and there isn't a way to shut them off. Furthermore, the failures on saving mean you frequently have to start over. These problems disrupt the workflow and can be frustrating.

Alternatives Considered

Anaconda

Other systems might be easier to set-up but Anaconda is a fairly flexible analytics toolkit. It can be configured in a way that truly matches the way in which your business or analytics department works. Built on top of lots of open source projects so things aren't siloed and you can avoid vendor lock-in.

Gephi

R is probably stronger from a statistics, mechanics, and customization stand-point, and has some plug-ins for graph visualization, but it can still be a bit of a black box, whereas Gephi is built around graph visualization, allowing you to really play with the data, even showing you the intermediate steps of the layout algorithms, which helps you understand how Gephi is making sense of the data and how you can use it more effectively. Its clickable GUI also makes it much easier to discover its functions and its beautiful outputs makes it easy to sell ideas to the un-initiated

Return on Investment

Anaconda

  • Centralized repository for all notebooks and analysis projects.
  • Solved for some security concerns from IT.
  • Saves money by avoiding ad-hoc computer resources for analysts.

Gephi

  • Gephi produces very high quality images that are suitable for publication in high tier journals.
