Anaconda

Anaconda is very suitable for a research team/lab/department which has many data scientists who want to apply some Python-based analytic programming and want to cooperate in sharing the results easily. It is not very well suited for final production environment deployment.

JMP Statistical Discovery Software from SAS

It is perfectly suited for statistical analyses, but I would not recommend JMP for users who do not have a statistical background. As previously stated, the learning curve is exceptionally steep, and I think that it would prove to be too steep for those without statistical background/knowledge

Pros

  • Everything is in one place, so it's very convinient
  • It's easy to switch between multiple functionalities
  • Performance and Speed - Python and R run smoothly and efficiently.

  • JMP is GREAT with graphical representations of data. It has a very graphical interface that allows for intuitive interaction. For example, if I graph a distribution of data, and I have some outliers, circling that area of the graph will hilight the rows of data on the corresponding table.
  • JMP's graph builder is a big hit. If I have a complex data set, I may know that I want to display it visually, but might not be sure about the best way to do that. The graph building feature is a fantastic way to "poke and prod" at the graph and get it to look just right. The map support is great. You want to show sales volumes by state in a map? JMP does it in a snap. The inner geek in you will get a kick out of all the ways you can show your data!
  • JMP is tuned to letting your numbers tell a story. If you have data, and a clear decision, but have trouble showing that to others, JMP can be extremely valuable. You can export your analyses as PDF files for easy viewing, and some modeling can even be saved as interactive HTML files, so that others can explore the data on their own.
  • One thing that you get with JMP that is hard to quantify, is access to a tremendous community of problem solvers, statisticians, and people using data to make better decisions. Most communities have a JMP Users Group (JUG) that provides a forum to learn from peers how to apply JMP's capabilities in new ways. Also, JMP will occasionally provide speakers and trainers as part of their discovery series, where you can hear presentations from some really high caliber people who are on the cutting edge of experiment design, data representation, and data mining. (All of these things I've just mentioned are provided at no additional cost.) Elsewhere in my review I mentioned that JMP's price structure, (high initial seat prices with prorated prices as you add users) might be prohibitive. I HAVE to think that their pricing model represents their commitment to support their software and get you up and using it.

Cons

  • Although some other users mentioned the installation is "simple", we did encounter some challenge in a highly controlled environment (due to security reasons).
  • Jupyter Notebook is extremely slow when the client/server side of the network's speed/bandwidth is not balanced.
  • Bootstrapping Anaconda takes too long, sometimes I even started doubting it would respond any more.
  • If there are extra python packages you need but are not by default installed by Anaconda, then some efforts will be required to figure out how to put them in the right place.

  • Easier manipulation between multiple tables
  • Once in a while the software would shut-down without letting saving the file
  • More pharma customised features

JMP has been good at releasing updates and adding new features and their support is good. Analytics is quick and you don't need scripting/programming experience. It has been used organization wide, and works well in that respect. Open source means that there are concerns regarding timely support. Cheap licensing and easy to maintain.

Once you figure out the bells and whistles/ins and outs of JMP, it becomes an intuitive, powerful tool. However, the learning curve is very steep; I think the product might be borderline unusable for those without at least a basic understanding of inferential statistics. However, even if you have a statistics background, the learning curve is still steep due to a confusing user interface, a weak help/search tool (at least within the program for Mac users; the online help is very useful), and a general lack of intuitiveness.

The SAS support team came on site to give a presentation to our entire team. They answer questions immediately and provide insight specific to your needs. They also provided a video conference to get me started with the software, which was really useful. There are textbooks written on scripting and JMP usage, which were provided to me as well.

Alternatives Considered

Anaconda is way easier to set-up. On Anaconda we have users working on Machine Learning in minutes, where on PyCharm is takes a lot longer to set-up and often involves getting help from IT. PyCharm is easier to integrate with Code repositories (such as GitHub), so if that's very important to you, you might want to take a look at PyCharm

Return on Investment

  • Centralized repository for all notebooks and analysis projects.
  • Solved for some security concerns from IT.
  • Saves money by avoiding ad-hoc computer resources for analysts.

  • We are able to complete better analyses, much faster in JMP, compared to Excel.
  • JMP's predictive modeling has helped us better understand our customers.
