Articulate 360

Articulate 360 is a great authoring tool for beginners. It has a very clean user interface and makes creating courses a breeze. You don't need to have much experience as an instructional designer to create a great and professional-looking course. I would recommend it for instructors who want to create intuitive courses available on many different platforms.

iSpring Suite

Without a doubt, iSpring software is the BEST product out there! However, it is becoming priced out of reality for small, non-profit agencies. I would have recommended this as the first purchase option 5 years ago, however pricing has become more of a determining factor for those asking me for recommendations.

Pros

Articulate 360

  • Ease of use/ability to learn how to use features
  • Clean and simple design output makes it easy for learners to navigate through courses
  • Freedom to create what your imagination can dream up
  • Community Support from e-learning heroes is great! Any issues are normally resolved with the community within a day and articulate staff still follows up.
  • 360 is always being upgraded and improved with character bundles, image/video content, and new feature roll-outs.

iSpring Suite

  • iSpring integrates with PowerPoint extremely well and enables the user to develop training in PowerPoint with ease.
  • iSpring characters are fantastic. They continue to add more regularly features regularly.
  • The voice recording and ability to integrate music is a very easy process.
  • Customer service is fantastic. They are quick to respond and their training is easy to follow.

Cons

Articulate 360

  • More flexibility to customize the look and feel of Articulate Rise templates (think of position of corporate logo and colors in quizzes)
  • A functionality that I would love to see is A morph transition
  • The JavaScript trigger can’t be used in preview mode. This really slows down the workflow when working with JavaScript

iSpring Suite

  • The software is in constant revision, so if you search for help online, be sure you are researching the correct revision. There is a lot of debris information about iSpring Suite online.
  • The Presentation and Publishing features are somewhat intimidating at first. Be sure you pay attention to every detail. The training I develop is pretty standardized, so I was able to write instructions for myself to follow to ensure each instance was set up the same way each time.
  • There are a lot of 'extras' I never use, such as characters and interactions, so be sure your style of training development is aligned with what iSpring has to offer.

Overall I can't fault Articulate 360. Sure, there are always enhancements that an individual user would like to see introduced, but generally speaking the usability is second to none.
Articulate 360 offers something for users of all levels. It can be friendly enough not to turn off novices, but has enough about it to keep the professional coming back for more.

The software integration was appealing to our department--particularly to the faculty who had not, prior to the pandemic, taught online--because it integrates with an already known entity: PowerPoint. Furthermore, iSpring's assessment builder with its wide variety of questions is extremely easy to use--basically plug and play--for any level of comfort that a faculty member has in terms of online teaching.

It took forever to get someone to respond--either by email or by phone--directly to a pricing and licensing question. It is unfortunate that a company that has such potential as a streamlined course building/authoring tool not only missed the boat with service but also proves itself to be all fluff and no substance.

We haven't had an issue with iSpring support in the time we have been using the application. The few times we have reached out for advice, we have been sent replies within a day. This is only due to the time zone difference. There have been times when troubleshooting has resulted in a message that the function we were looking for or the content we were looking to create is not possible, but in every case, our request has been passed onto the development team for follow up and possible integration with future patches.

Alternatives Considered

Articulate 360

Articulate 360 has the total package vs the other tools. If you just wanted to do video, you can use tools like Camtasia. Another elearning tool I have tried is called Viewlet Builder. It was a very stripped down version of a Storyline type software where you could create and produce elearning modules as well. Articulate 360 has pretty much all of the capabilities of the other kinds of elearning development tools, so you pretty much only need one suite instead of compiling a toolkit of mixed software

iSpring Suite

Therer are several other interactive video creation tools out there, such as Camtasia, Adobe Captivate and even PowerPoint on its own, but none of them come close to offering the galaxy of features that is served up by iSpring Suite, and it's the easiest to learn and use with affordable price tags

Return on Investment

Articulate 360

  • So far we have been able to implement a host of interactive eLearnings that have received a widely positive reception from our learner base! It has some glitches but everyone is mostly happy with it and seem to learn a lot.
  • Rise is so easy to use that I can whip up a course as easily as I can whip up an outline, so usually, I just dive into course creation and share that as my "outline." This helps me get work done faster.
  • Being able to review my work with the 'Review' tool has allowed us to collaborate much more quickly, which has DEEPLY benefitted one of our big revenue-generating projects last year.

iSpring Suite

  • A very positive impact is being able to complete the whole authorting process based on the work of one single professional (author). Before iSpring, we needed to involve a technical person to create pages, animations, interactions, etc. It means cost reductions and time saving.
  • The product has a low price when compared to similar competitors. It is a great advantage when it is necessary to purchase licenses for many users.
  • Medium learning curve. It does not take too long to train someone new to use the tool, but the final product should be simple at first. Depending on the size of a course or amount of objects to generate, productivity may be an issue depending on the knowledge level of the authoring users.
