Articulate Storyline

Articulate Storyline is very well suited for customer service type training or other sort of flashy demonstrations as it offers a lot of human character options and interactivity features. We use Storyline for our more technical training, however we only utilize about 20% of the program's features because the characters or animations are quite out of place in our modules. We need a much more academic look and feel in our material.

Not really, I would not say that. I have become really satisfied with it over the past few months. It has been a great help for me for some months. In the past it was not like this. Within a few years it has developed very well and made me so happy in my education.

Pros

  • Storyline is incredibly flexible. It incorporates a wide range of media formats (images, videos, etc), if you want to add a quiz you have a wide range of question formats (drag and drop, text, etc), and the Triggers and States features let you customize what happens based on the user's actions. You can basically build a choose-your-own-adventure activity.
  • The basics of Storyline are easy to learn. When you open Storyline for the first time, you can immediately start building simple activities with minimal training. That said, you'll want to refer to the online video tutorials to learn the advanced features.
  • Once you've created an activity, you can publish it in multiple formats, including web format, mobile, SCORM, and Word. I usually publish an activity to both web format and Word (which I then convert to PDF). The Word/PDF version serves as a transcript of the interactive version for people with auditory disabilities.

  • Steep had zero experience with online course development, how to offer and manage. After significant research we selected iSpring Learn. To our surprise the company has far exceeded our expectations. They held our hands as we tried to learn, they guided us, offered advice and basically solved all our start up issues.
  • Their customer service is attentive and follows through as they say they will.

Cons

  • Responsive- this is a matter of perspective. On one hand, responsive sites are becoming the norm, and sites are arranging themselves to better fit on a device's available space and orientation. On the other, if a designer creates a software simulation or a presentation design ("slide") for a specific presentation, rearranging those assets is not following the designer's intent (this is why Articulate scales, but doesn't have true responsiveness). I see both sides, but may want to see some options to set breakpoints to arrange items for different sizes or orientations in future versions.
  • Articulate is an early adopter of xAPI, and pretty standard features are reporting in xAPI streams, but seeing expansion of xAPI options in triggers would be an amazing feature set to expand
  • Wish I had more to say, but those are the only things I could think of after building over 100 courses in the tool.

  • We would very much like to be able to brand the iSpring Learn student interface by organisation which would make it possible to franchise our courses through other sailing schools.
  • We feel that the way iSpring Learn presents course materials to students is too one-dimensional making it hard for us to infer any structure to our courses or to define learning pathways.
  • We need to integrate complex exercises and formal exams into our courses and deliver these by way of online forms and there's no way to integrate this type of material into iSpring Learn.

First off, Articulate doesn't require a contract for their software so this question is immediately mute.I've had nothing but an amazing experience using all of Articulate's software in both my past and current position, I couldn't fathom recommending another tool, to be completely honest. It's caused no headaches or frustration that couldn't be immediately resolved using the eLearning Heroes community. There's really no other option in my book.

In the past I could not encourage my students to take online training. The results and the questions were hard to be given. When I used the iSpring Suite along with iSpring Learn, my dreams came through and most of the time my students are online and take good training with my programme.

The Articulate staff and user community converge into the invaluable resource known as the eLearning Heroes Community. You can go there for anything ranging from tech help, inspiration, and though provoking discussion. They don't just support you using the software, they support you in your career as an Instructional Designer or eLearning Developer, and no one else offers that on the same level as Articulate.

They just do not work on the weekends. If I need anything, they reply less in than 24 hours, except holidays. I like that. They give me good chat support a lot. If I forget that I sent them an email, they do not forget and reply to me very soon. It is really appreciated.

We can say that most of my students attend my classes twice a week and that's not enough for someone to learn. I put some training for them to do at home and they really enjoy doing them. The kind of progress they make is really satisfying for them and they are always learning.

Online Training

I love the fact that both a demonstration AND text version of the tutorials are available. Our firewall was blocking the demos until I requested my company allow them! Having the text version available still enabled me to learn from the tutorials. They are very well done and informative, and there is a tutorial for just about anything you need to learn to do with Storyline. I have always been more than satisfied with the support and training available to us for all Articulate products and I love the community!

As a teacher, I used to spend a lot of time correcting my students' papers. Now with iSpring Learn, my time has been saved and everything is done automatically. All the time I can check my students' progress and I know which exams they have taken or they should take. On the whole, online training has really helped a lot of teachers

Implementing Articulate Storyline was a straight-forward and painless as humanly possible. There were no headaches found with other authoring tools not behaving well in existing systems, it really is excellently designed software. Everything was thought out so very well.

When I talked to my colleagues or informed them to search for a programme before iSpring Learn, they were not successful in designing and implementing a programme like this. I am sure they have done a lot to implement it in the best and educational way. That was not that easy as we thought.

Alternatives Considered

As mentioned earlier, I used to use Adobe Captivate prior to Storyline. It has been at least 3 1/2 years since I've used Captivate, so it may have gotten better since then. But, from my experience, Articulate is much more intuitive and has a lot more features than Captivate. Overall, it is easier to use and is easier to complete a project in Storyline as opposed to Captivate.

When it comes to creating materials for learners, Moodle is a real drag to work with, and ProProfs is not much better. ProProfs' LMS is pretty good, but they don't have a good way to create good-looking materials offline. iSpring's Quizmaker seems to have great promise.

It is easy to train new users and manage content. Being able to import older projects and PPT files makes it very easy to use for a lot of "moonlighters" in our department.

Return on Investment

  • Articulate Storyline is a true rapid e-Learning suite of tools...we have decreased our development timeline significantly across the board. Our customers love the speed with which we can create interactive and engaging courses.

  • You can very quickly provide interactive e-learning content to your users which helps them to improve their knowledge... and then to be more successful in their job! If they are, their company is also. With the e-commerce tool, you can make a link to an online payment system directly sell your e-courses, The ROI is almost immediate as the iSpring Learn subscription fee is very affordable and you can quickly set the solution.
