Articulate Storyline

I think Storyline is great for self-reviews. It is fairly easy to set up a "Drag and Drop" slide with a few questions to drag over to the right answer. You can use pictures and graphics to make it more appealing and interactive. It is also very useful for training processes. For example, if you wanted to show someone how to use a specific program, you can use screenshots and screen video captures to help show the process. I think it would be harder to use Storyline for a class lecture or just for videos. For example, if you wanted to record a physical classroom, or record a screen capture in which you are just using screen captures.

Pros

  • It is a versatile tool that can create a wide variety of eLearning experiences.
  • It interfaces well with SCORM Cloud, which is what we use for dispatching eCourses to clients.
  • It is fairly inexpensive for a single user license.

  • I really like their library of leadership videos where leaders share their best practices. They're short and easy to use in a variety of settings (e.g. trainings, business meetings, etc.).
  • I find Skillsoft to have strong customer service. They do a very good job of listening to your needs and advising a variety of solutions within the given parameters.

Cons

  • Precision is a sore spot when it comes to developing in Storyline. Much like trying to be precise with items using PowerPoint, it is a frustrating prospect. I'd imagine it has something to do with the product being rooted within the MS Office/PowerPoint format.
  • While I'm familiar with the ribbon in Office, it's flawed for sure. I've found this to be the same within Storyline. Again, I'd imagine it has something to do with the similarity.
  • There are never enough animations/transitions. Though I've managed to mix multiple animations, etc., It's never enough.

Likelihood to Renew

Articulate Storyline6.0
Based on 21 answers
We are moving away from the standalone eCourse model, so depending upon when that shift happens, we might choose not to renew since we won't be supporting eCourses built in Articulate Storyline anymore. As long as we are still selling and supporting those eCourses, we will continue to renew the licenses we have.

Currently we operate in developing nations. If Skillsoft had a pricing program for those nations versus what they use in the Americas / Europe, we would greatly consider it. Right now though, the Skillsoft pricing, while affordable for advanced nations, is out of reach for the developing nations. We hope that changes.

Usability

The basics are easy to learn but you won't get really robust activities from using just the basics. However, if you can invest the time in learning how to use all of Storyline's features, you'll have tremendous learning development power at your fingertips. I do have to say, though, that there is a beautiful logic to how everything in Storyline works. Once you learn a few of the advanced features, you can learn them all because there's a similar underlying logic. The interface is also very appealing and friendly.

The integration between the main Skillsoft portal and Books24x7 could use improvement. Most users don't realize there is actually a separate books portal because the link to it is not that visible. Yet, once they discover it, they realize that the books portal is actually easier to use to search for books, ebook summaries, and videos.

Support

Articulate Storyline10.0

I hardly ever get a response that solves my problem. As a matter of fact, I submitted a support call almost 2 months ago about a problem I was experiencing with Articulate Online (for which we pay a handsome amount every year) and, for the first month I had to keep following up and was told it was being sent to quality assurance to investigate. Well, I still have not received a response to my issue. In my mind, this is a huge fail on the part of Articulate and I am always disappointed with the lack of support I receive.

Online Training

I love the fact that both a demonstration AND text version of the tutorials are available. Our firewall was blocking the demos until I requested my company allow them! Having the text version available still enabled me to learn from the tutorials. They are very well done and informative, and there is a tutorial for just about anything you need to learn to do with Storyline. I have always been more than satisfied with the support and training available to us for all Articulate products and I love the community!

Just that it takes a village. It cannot be done alone. Everyone needs to know what you are doing and what their role is in the implementation. Tightly managing the project management schedule and resources is important in ensuring that everything gets done on time, and with quality. Education is KEY

Alternatives Considered

When you look at Storyline's most common direct competitors, they are all very comparable in terms of features. Certainly, each tool has a capability or two that is different from it's peers, but truly, these products are extremely comparable when evaluating features- especially the features that are most used by developers and designers. However, I worked in a department of 7. We tried Lectora. Only two of us could truly get competent in the tool. The majority just couldn't "get it". Despite having great features, the users couldn't leverage the features. The team also used Captivate for years. 4 of the team would be considered competent or productive in the tool (but only 2 at advanced levels). When Storyline came in, 6 became competent at a high level within 3 months (or sooner).

I used Skillsoft before discovering lynda.com at my current firm. Both have strong offerings. lynda.com has broader offerings and seems more technically oriented

Scalability

It is easy to train new users and manage content. Being able to import older projects and PPT files makes it very easy to use for a lot of "moonlighters" in our department.

Return on Investment

  • Tremendous ROI- a team of 7 redeveloped a suite of 60 courses in under 6 months with Storyline for very highly regulated environment. The prior tool that we used did not see that level of production after 5 years of use.
  • Enhanced analytics- the level of data we were able to get out of this tool was superior than our prior tool, which allowed us to better analyze elearning outcomes and improve programs.
  • Speed to competency- the team came up to speed on the tool in a very fast period of time, and they used Articulate Community resources to leverage templates that allowed them to create elearning interactions that they would not be able to develop from scratch, so the shared assets actually increased capability

  • While we didn't calculate an exact ROI, we found Skillsoft to be a positive investment.
