Articulate Storyline

Articulate Storyline is very well suited for customer service type training or other sort of flashy demonstrations as it offers a lot of human character options and interactivity features. We use Storyline for our more technical training, however we only utilize about 20% of the program's features because the characters or animations are quite out of place in our modules. We need a much more academic look and feel in our material.

They have a large library - make sure you clearly study the library offerings and choose the courses that are best for you as you will never be able to use all of them. Make sure you survey your user base before purchasing the licensing of the library courses so the courses are 'marked' with an employee in mind to keep costs minimized. Only purchase the Books 24x7 if you have a large IT department - otherwise you might want to lease a smaller content portion. Their Leadership Development, Project Management, business series and critical thinking and technical products are exceptional.

Pros

  • Storyline is incredibly flexible. It incorporates a wide range of media formats (images, videos, etc), if you want to add a quiz you have a wide range of question formats (drag and drop, text, etc), and the Triggers and States features let you customize what happens based on the user's actions. You can basically build a choose-your-own-adventure activity.
  • The basics of Storyline are easy to learn. When you open Storyline for the first time, you can immediately start building simple activities with minimal training. That said, you'll want to refer to the online video tutorials to learn the advanced features.
  • Once you've created an activity, you can publish it in multiple formats, including web format, mobile, SCORM, and Word. I usually publish an activity to both web format and Word (which I then convert to PDF). The Word/PDF version serves as a transcript of the interactive version for people with auditory disabilities.

  • Covers a wide-breadth of topics ranging from desktop / office skills to communications skills to leadership development
  • Offers knowledge portals (Knowledge Centers) around specific topic areas such as Management Development, Six Sigma, Professional Foundations, Sales, etc - that aggregate content from the large Skillsoft resources and present it in a way that is both meaningful and relevant to the learners. Plus, they have editors update the featured topic each month.
  • Include a wide variety of learning media such as eLearning courses, books, book summaries and videos.

Cons

  • Learning the more advanced features of Storyline does take some time. When I was learning Storyline, I was able to set aside about 45 minutes at the beginning of each day to watch 1 or 2 tutorial videos and then practice what I had just learned. I got up to speed very quickly this way! And once you have some advanced skills with Storyline, that's where the fun really begins!
  • Some of the output options aren't ideal. For example, you can publish an activity to a DVD, but the output is an exe file, which some computers won't run. Also the Word doc output is fairly terrible looking. (Although, if you have a little skill with Word styles, you can easily fit it up.)

  • Some of the courses are too long - (eg. 4 hours) - however, a learner has the option to only access 1 or more sections making it easier to consume.
  • Some of the courses are outdated and boring. Skillsoft has gradually been updating these courses - but there is still room for improvement.
  • Courses provide a good foundation for learning - but Skillsoft needs to do more to attract millenials with their courseware.
  • Change their contracting to provide pricing more in line with what is needed in developing countries / third world nations.

It goes without saying that Artculate's products are the easiest to use and offer a great deal of functions with flexibility. Once an eLearning author uses the product it becomes tempting to not use other methods, but one would be wise not to limit him or herself to a single learning authoring platform. On the other hand, if given a single choice of a tool for rapid eLearning development, Articulate's Storyline would be a top choice.

I would recommend to renew as this is part of our employee development goals and we make a strong commitment to develop employees' people skills. I think SkillSoft has a very innovative approach to develop people's interpersonal skills other than traditional classroom learning.

Overall the ease of use is one of its endearing qualities. You can open the program, start a new project and get going regardless of your expertise with it. If you have ever created a presentation of any kind you can get going with Storyline on day 1 the first time you open it

The integration between the main Skillsoft portal and Books24x7 could use improvement. Most users don't realize there is actually a separate books portal because the link to it is not that visible. Yet, once they discover it, they realize that the books portal is actually easier to use to search for books, ebook summaries, and videos.

The Articulate user community (including staff and users) is amazing. There are so many people willing to help each other and offer advice. You can tell people are passionate about this software and supporting new users who are struggling. When you're a new user, it really helps to know you're not alone if you get stuck.

Online Training

I love the fact that both a demonstration AND text version of the tutorials are available. Our firewall was blocking the demos until I requested my company allow them! Having the text version available still enabled me to learn from the tutorials. They are very well done and informative, and there is a tutorial for just about anything you need to learn to do with Storyline. I have always been more than satisfied with the support and training available to us for all Articulate products and I love the community!

Just that it takes a village. It cannot be done alone. Everyone needs to know what you are doing and what their role is in the implementation. Tightly managing the project management schedule and resources is important in ensuring that everything gets done on time, and with quality. Education is KEY

Alternatives Considered

When you look at Storyline's most common direct competitors, they are all very comparable in terms of features. Certainly, each tool has a capability or two that is different from it's peers, but truly, these products are extremely comparable when evaluating features- especially the features that are most used by developers and designers. However, I worked in a department of 7. We tried Lectora. Only two of us could truly get competent in the tool. The majority just couldn't "get it". Despite having great features, the users couldn't leverage the features. The team also used Captivate for years. 4 of the team would be considered competent or productive in the tool (but only 2 at advanced levels). When Storyline came in, 6 became competent at a high level within 3 months (or sooner).

I used Skillsoft before discovering lynda.com at my current firm. Both have strong offerings. lynda.com has broader offerings and seems more technically oriented

It is easy to train new users and manage content. Being able to import older projects and PPT files makes it very easy to use for a lot of "moonlighters" in our department.
