Articulate Studio

Studio is really a good program for turning PowerPoint into eLearning presentations. If you're comfortable in PPT, you can really spice it up with Studio. If you also use Storyline (also by Articulate), you will find it's not nearly as flexible or robust, but the learning curve is much easier and turning out finished courses is much quicker. Just be aware that it's still somewhat buggy, and the audio editor is very frustrating at times.

iSpring Learn

The only drawback to the iSpring Learn is probably the price. For a smaller company, it is a little more pricey than some of its competitors. That being said, it is hands down easier to use, and it provides many more tools than a lot of its competitors. Even if one was just to go with the iSpring Quiz only version (which is free) it is a terrific product. I believe it would be well suited for any company/trainer who is looking to take that leap into an online learning management system.

Pros

  • Integrating very well with PPT
  • Allow authors to create ad-hoc video and audio clips on the spot
  • Easy to export SCORM formats for LMS integration
  • Supplies rich library of stock graphics, footage and 'characters' to allow for fast build out

  • First, I like the feel of Quizmaker, especially that it's a robust, stand-alone piece of offline software. I disliked creating quizzes with online, web-based input because the creation interface was too clunky and unattractive. But Quizmaker makes creation as easy as making a PowerPoint and has a WYSIWYG style.
  • Next, I like the feeling of the Learn console and the report-generating tools at my disposal. Presently, I'm using Learn for a select group of students, but I see how I could easily expand that to a wider, online education market, given the tracking data implementation that could be used.

Cons

  • UI is a bit dated, but it's parallel to PPT which puts some users at ease
  • Storyline is PC only, by far the biggest drawback
  • A big slow in rendering video content during export
  • Player is a bit rigid

  • Essay type questions cannot be graded on the LMS. It would help if space was provided for the allocation of a mark for questions that are not automatically marked by the testing system.

In the past I could not encourage my students to take online training. The results and the questions were hard to be given. When I used the iSpring Suite along with iSpring Learn, my dreams came through and most of the time my students are online and take good training with my programme.

I have no problem using it and it is the same for my students. Anytime I ask them which part is not easy to use, they keep silent and say thank you.

They just do not work on the weekends. If I need anything, they reply less in than 24 hours, except holidays. I like that. They give me good chat support a lot. If I forget that I sent them an email, they do not forget and reply to me very soon. It is really appreciated.

We can say that most of my students attend my classes twice a week and that's not enough for someone to learn. I put some training for them to do at home and they really enjoy doing them. The kind of progress they make is really satisfying for them and they are always learning.

As a teacher, I used to spend a lot of time correcting my students' papers. Now with iSpring Learn, my time has been saved and everything is done automatically. All the time I can check my students' progress and I know which exams they have taken or they should take. On the whole, online training has really helped a lot of teachers

When I talked to my colleagues or informed them to search for a programme before iSpring Learn, they were not successful in designing and implementing a programme like this. I am sure they have done a lot to implement it in the best and educational way. That was not that easy as we thought.

Alternatives Considered

We look at Captivate first, which Adobe oddly leaves out of its Creative Cloud suite, and I can see why it seems to be completely foreign in term of UI vs other Adobe products. The familiar PPT structure Captivate leverages is completely absent and the tools are much more rigid. Exporting was also more difficult - it's pretty night and day different. Captivate is AWFUL, especially for an Adobe product.

When it comes to creating materials for learners, Moodle is a real drag to work with, and ProProfs is not much better. ProProfs' LMS is pretty good, but they don't have a good way to create good-looking materials offline. iSpring's Quizmaker seems to have great promise.

Return on Investment

  • A high retention rate of students
  • Fairly cheap for team licenses but not as friendly for individuals
  • Once you understand how it works you can build modules very quickly

  • Don't really have a measure as of yet. We knew going in that our timing was poor relating to when people would have time available to take our course. We are convinced that the presentation of the course has improved our brand acceptance and awareness.
