Pros

  • Manage tasks on a project level. Manage stories on a feature level.
  • Sprint management is very easy. I can organize a sprint quickly from the backlog and have a good understanding of what's being done and by whom.

  • Web-based platform easy to use - mobile app is great
  • User feedback to improve Project place and monthly updates is a strength
  • Central repository for internal and external team members is very helpful

Cons

  • A timeline feature would be huge for enterprise reporting. If you think about viewing a project, it's not just its sprint planning and task management that people want visibility to. It's, what happened and when over the life of the project. Having a timeline with a milestone-level view would help Asana gain traction in the enterprise.
  • A forecasting tool of delivery is a killer feature (remember killer apps?) for managers. Based on the delivery schedule for the past 50% of the project, we have X% confidence we're on track for final delivery. Now, some of this goes against agile principles but at the same time, so to people, projects and organizations.

  • Risk management: The Issues tool inside Projectplace just isn't sufficient to record and track project risks. Risk management is a key aspect of project management, so it's surprising that Projectplace have never incorporated such a facility.
  • Project closedown/archiving: The facilities to move a whole project from Projectplace once it has completed, are weak. There should be a way to package up the important information and documents and download them in once go, rather than with many separate actions.
  • Account administration: The tools provide to account administrators are limited. It would be valuable to be able to report on different aspects of how Projectplace is being used, by workspace/group/etc over time.
  • Planning: The plan tool is fairly simplistic. Its tasks hook into boards and cards, but it's a closed Projectplace environment. PMs who prefer to maintain their plan using MS Project have only an import option.
  • Mobile apps: The Android app provides a poor experience compared with the web interface. I can't vouch for the iOS app (but I suspect it's better!)

Big fan of Asana. There are many free tools out there so difficult to take on more cost when we have free tools we can use

They don't fix everything, but they have certainly gone the extra mile for us. When we were frustrated with a recent change that altered our default view of every project, changing it from all projects being visible to just incomplete projects being visible, they wrote a custom script to change all of our default views back for us, so we didn't have to manually click 3,000 times (we have over a thousand projects).

Alternatives Considered

We also use Active Collab to track tasks and issue work tickets. I find this to be a much harder tool to use vs. Asana. It was not in the drop down menue above but its a tool we actively use and I can tell you its hard to find tickets once you have created them and assigned them unless you keep the link in an email. Asana is easy to locate all your tasks and due dates because of your personal dash and projects list. Active collab requires you to create too many levels for one task, the main ticket, then the tasks within the ticket which you have to individually create to be able to track each milestone, if there is no task assigned it doesnt appear in the designers list of things to do, which in turn creates issues and forgotten tasks. None of this is an issue with Asana.

SharePoint seems to be a bit more userfriendly and more organizationally driven in comparison to project place.
