Planview Projectplace

It is well suited for diverse and matrixed project teams especially those that are geographically dispersed. [It's also well suited] If you have a large number of documents that need to be approved and need to track that approval. It is also nice that team members (like a client) do not have to purchase a license to use Projectplace.ProjectPlace is not well suited if you have to do any sort of resource scheduling or forecasting, or if you need that to drive the project schedule. I wasn't thrilled with the WBS management functionality so if you need to have a robust WBS you might consider a different tool.

Pros

  • Asana has an easy to use UI. Even if you don't get into the advanced things Asana can do for your project management, it's super easy to use and keeps even the most basic task lists organized.
  • Asana lets you view your tasks in multiple views. You can view all the tasks assigned to you or all the tasks under a certain project (i.e. HR). It also lets you customize the views within each project by due date or by other customizable priorities.
  • Asana's email to task and Google Chrome extensions make getting tasks out of your email and into Asana super easy. I forward a large percentage of my emails directly to Asana so that I can prioritize how I choose to follow up and respond to requests in my inbox.

  • Helps keep track of your assigned work
  • Helps to see what other members of your team are working on
  • It helps to understand objectives and timelines for accomplishing objectives.

Cons

  • A timeline feature would be huge for enterprise reporting. If you think about viewing a project, it's not just its sprint planning and task management that people want visibility to. It's, what happened and when over the life of the project. Having a timeline with a milestone-level view would help Asana gain traction in the enterprise.
  • A forecasting tool of delivery is a killer feature (remember killer apps?) for managers. Based on the delivery schedule for the past 50% of the project, we have X% confidence we're on track for final delivery. Now, some of this goes against agile principles but at the same time, so to people, projects and organizations.

Big fan of Asana. There are many free tools out there so difficult to take on more cost when we have free tools we can use

Lots of useful features, if you can learn how to use them and actually implement it across enough of the team to adapt it

They don't fix everything, but they have certainly gone the extra mile for us. When we were frustrated with a recent change that altered our default view of every project, changing it from all projects being visible to just incomplete projects being visible, they wrote a custom script to change all of our default views back for us, so we didn't have to manually click 3,000 times (we have over a thousand projects).

Alternatives Considered

Outlook Outlook can track tasks. However, it's not very collaborative; you can send tasks to other people but you can see what them after that. This feature as part of Outlook was a disaster. The only benefit that currently exists is that it was free; it never really fit in with what we wanted.Wunderlist When we looked at this, it was a better application for tasks than Outlook. However, it still was really hard to use as a team (it seemed better suited for an individual). It was simpler to use (and lacked some of the depth of objects) that was a positive but we couldn't figure out how to get the mobile app and the desktop app to sync really well. TodoTXT This was the simplest product to use. It also meant that it lacked all the nice features of the other application.

TeamworkPM: More modern interface and feature-rich than Projectplace. Cheaper than Projectplace. Weaker on document management.
