AspDotNetStorefront

If you need a tool to manage a website, this is a good place to start. If you aren't ready for something of this caliber it might not be meant for your business. It's a stepping stone and you need to be ready to learn and it may require a bit more attention.

SAP Hybris

Hybris fits well into a large development organization and will need many disciplines to fully leverage. It should fit very well into SAP heavy environments and recent roadmaps indicate a tighter and tighter integration in the future. It would be a challenge for a smaller shop to cultivate the kind of knowledge diversity necessary. Getting the initial momentum may also be a challenge if you do not have a good implementation partner, at least in the early stages.

Pros

  • Tons of reporting tools
  • Easy to navigate
  • Multiple user profiles
Donovan Farmer profile photo
  • Solid architecture upon the Java Spring framework
  • Clear, efficient separation of presentation and data layers
  • Easy to setup and maintain local development environment
  • UI layer easy to extend, or re-tool to fold in preferred frameworks and utilities.

Cons

  • Not everyone can navigate easily without training
  • Some reports can be fairly large and take lots of time to download

  • Promotion management is not flexible. It comes with a few out of the box promotions, but if you need to do something advanced you need to customize it.
  • Customization of the promotions is very painful.
  • The object-relational mapping framework (aka items.xml) is a bottleneck. It stores all meta-information in a database which causes migration problems. Hope they allow you to build a persistence layer with standard JPA.
  • It's difficult to get help from official support. Last time I had to file a ticket through teh SAP system which wasn't user-friendly.

I truly enjoy leading Hybris development projects and participating in new feature development for the platform. I see huge potential for growth and hope to be instrumental in bringing Hybris to the bleeding edge of presentation layer technology.

Figuring out the CMS tools took some time. Supporting documentation is sparse.I also found the tools to be slow at times, making simple template edits an arduous process.

I give this an 8 instead of a 10 because in hindsight, while I am extremely happy with the platform and the things I've learned through my exposure to it, I also see so many areas for improvement in the outcome of my efforts. My advice to front end developers working with Hybris and/or the Java stack for the first time, is to not be intimidated by it. Question everything. Trust your intuition. Do not be afraid to refactor or completely replace something that appears integral to the platform if you see a clear benefit to doing so. It's much less far reaching than you think and the core system will not come crumbling to its knees if you make broad sweeping alterations. In fact, the energy you will expend to retool your site with a new framework will grow in tandem with the amount of time you spend hesitating, and at some point may become critical enough to force your hand while simultaneously becoming risky enough to destabilize your entire project delivery. If you don't like JQuery UI, punt it. If you don't care for the Blueprint CSS framework, burn it down. Making the strategic decision to adopt the toolset that best fits your organization from the very beginning will pay off in spades.

Alternatives Considered

More customization and ability to work with web designers make it an easy tool to manage projects and promote growth of your store front. It may not be as user friendly as others but it has more flexibility by far.

Hybris becomes a leader in e-commerce platforms as SAP continuously improves it. Each half year we can see a new version for a lot of solutions for the most rerecent-commerce challenges: configurable promotions, coupons, wish lists, unbounded carts, live edits, responsive design, mobile app, etc. Other [products] could also be good for specific cases, but hybris looks better for mid-sized and big retailers.
