Overall Satisfaction with WatchGuard AuthPoint

We use WatchGuard AuthPoint exclusively for our users working at home and connecting with VPN. We believe that Multi-Factor Authentication is a must for any company with home users that need to gain access to company networks.
  • Multi-Factor Authentication for VPN access
  • Simple to use with smart-phone authorization
  • Easy client account setup and access with WatchGuard Cloud
  • The installation manual needs a LOT of work. A setup video would be FANTASTIC
  • Confusing initial setup.
  • Many pieces need to be in place and (re)configured before we got it working right.
  • My company buys insurance against a catastrophic compromise of our network. (Ransomeware, etc.)
  • Showing that we use MFA for VPN access is almost becoming a MUST to qualify for that kind of insurance policy.
  • MFA is an additional layer of protection for our network and the peace of mind it brings is invaluable.
We chose WatchGuard for two reasons. 1. We have been using WatchGuard appliances for many years and 2. The AuthPoint licensing prices are reasonable and fit our budget. So I would say that familiarity with WatchGuard products and knowing how good Watchguard support is were the two biggest contributing factors.
We do manage AuthPoint from the Cloud but I wouldn't say it adds more benefit than any of our other Cloud-based applications. Cloud-based apps are pretty much becoming the standard these days, so no extra points for that.
It has been well received and it's easy to use. However, the initial setup can be a bit intimidating for older users when the token needs to be linked to their phone. Sometimes we need to hold their hand and work them through the setup and once that's done they can perform the actual authentication and authorization process easily.
We do not use the SSO portion of the AuthPoint application. To be honest, I'm a little leery of installing that app on my network. I would probably need to see it in action before adopting something like that.

Yes

Yes

Did implementation of WatchGuard AuthPoint go as expected?

No

Would you buy WatchGuard AuthPoint again?

Yes

Fantastic application for employees working from home. Now we can assign and control VPN access in a secure way with Multi-Factor Authentication. A scenario where it's less appropriate is when an outside facility needs generic VPN access to our network on a daily basis but we never know which of their employees might be initiating the connection. In a case like that, there isn't a single shared smartphone we can assign a token to so the MFA mechanism breaks down at that point.

Using WatchGuard AuthPoint

ProsCons
Like to use
Consistent
Quick to learn
Feel confident using
Unnecessarily complex
Difficult to use
Requires technical support
Lots to learn
  • Authenticating with a smart phone is super easy
  • Setting up new users in the Cloud is easy
  • Auditing use and running reports in the Cloud is nice
  • The initial setup is a mess. Your install guide is horrible
  • A CLEAR step-by-step video would be awesome

Once it has been set up, using AuthPoint for VPN MFA is great! It's the initial setup that makes people pull their hair out.

Between all of the settings in the Cloud, Firebox and application, everything has to be perfect or it never works. And your documentation is a confusing mish-mash of ill-defined terms and procedures with embedded links that often loop back to pages you've already read. Very difficult to find the correct information without calling WatchGuard Support directly and speaking with an expert.
