Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor

We are using SolarWinds NPM to manage and monitor network infrastructure for our client. It's most helpful to get an alert, push configuration, download, compare and run scripts. Right now, it's only used by the network department and we use it to get alerts via email if any devices are down so that we will act on it asap. Finally I like the Orion toolset which is most helpful.

Pros

  • Alerting via email, run jobs, compliance & reporting
  • Maintenance mode option to manage & unmanage devices is helpful if there is a planned outage
  • While adding new devices, there is a custom feature where we can add and export devices for doing reporting

Cons

  • The database increases more often and we need to get help from other teams to increase HDD size & memory
We still use WhatsUp Gold (old version) in some of our legacy sites, but we prefer SolarWinds NPM which give more features.
SolarWinds NPM shows status, load summary, bandwidth, the percentage of utilization, average response time, memory, and CPU of the devices I upload to it. This gives us more visibility whats devices are up to. It's also useful and gives more kernel information when adding Checkpoint, ASA devices. Also, when adding a Cisco wireless controller, it will provide us the AP associated with the channels and client counts.
