8x8 Virtual Office

8x8 is a perfect solution for small businesses needing less than 50 phones in an office environment or for businesses that extensively rely on remote teleworkers.Once an office reaches somewhere between 75-100 extensions, it may be more cost effective to have an in-house VoIP telephone switch and then using SIP connections to connect to the outside PSTN.

For Insurance agencies, small practices, small call centers, anyone that need call forwarding or work with his number remotely while away from office. I can't list all the things I'm gaining as a Fonality customer. From the installation process, the configuration phase with the technicians, the account managers, every Fonality employee was professional and savvy. I was a contact center specialist for more than 10 years and I can tell you that I've never been this happy with a service! Never! Probably if you need a more complex solution and you have an enterprise level company having your own hardware gives you more control over your calls and how to manage them. But again, I think that Fonality can cover most scenarios without the need of a huge investment.

Pros

8x8 Virtual Office

  • 8x8 set up is straight up yellow for dummies version easy. This is incredibly important as that was promoted as one of its selling points and they followed through with it.
  • It is accessible from anywhere and there is even an app for Android and iOS. I can not see this as a plus though because with all of the competition available, NOT having these options on your mobile is a death sentence for customer retention.
  • Customer support was positive. They were responsive whenever we would encounter any issues or need clarifications on our package.

  • From an administrator's perspective, Fonality makes administering the company's phone system easy. Configuration menus and setup options are logically structured and easy to understand.
  • Technical support has been very good. Early on in our deployment, we had some nagging voice quality issues which were network related. Fonality provided exceptional support even though it was not technically their issue. It is important to know ahead of time how well your vendors work with other vendors for integrated services like a VOIP telephone system. Fonality support demonstrated their patience and perseverance in helping us resolve our issues.
  • Although we don't use remote office capabilities much, the ability to set up phones on the system in remote locations has been a significant help to several of our departments.

Cons

8x8 Virtual Office

  • The user interface feels is incredibly boring and definitely reminds you that you are at work, though feels like you are at work on a Windows 95 computer.
  • Pricing was way too high compared to the competition and e-fax was even more expensive.
  • It is not special. There is absolutely nothing in it that made me feel impressed to any significant degree. I say this not to be mean, but they do not offer anything that is worth paying even half the price they are asking for.

  • I would like to see a better designed HUD program, the PC and Mac based telephone interface to the Fonality PBX.

Overall excellent usability, with a few adjustments I feel this is the absolute best VoIP system out there. Just a clarification on the licences and limit the interface to reflect what licence we have. There should be a back or redunancy feature to Fonality Server, If there was a mistake we should be able to resort back to a usable state asap. Before implementing changes to the server, there should be a trial or sample of the changes to make sure it behaves as intended before effecting customer experience. It would be nice to have a demo version of Fonality interface so possible clients can truly evauluate the system. Because of the quality, it would have made it easier to convince the owners to make the transition sooner

Reliability and Availability

In the time I have used 8x8 Virtual Office, the core system has been up and running almost flawlessly though we do have a slight performance degradation from time to time as is expected of cloud software. The one recurring issue for us is that the fax connection is not always functional for outbound messages. We usually have to retry three or four times to get the fax to connect reliably to the destination machine. Once connected, it's smooth sailing.

None of the features that are available slow down the application. The reports (even the ones with hundreds of records) complete very quickly and the web interface as well as the mobile application never struggle to load or complete a task. The analytics will sometimes take some time to reflect the online status of users but it is to be expected due to connection speeds.

Support has been great from start to finish. They sent me an Excel spreadsheet questionnaire on how we would like the system to behave. The tech made the initial setup very easy. We took 1 month to finalize and test the new system before we ported over our main number. All the support from technical training for the admins and user support on issues like call transfers. The system works flawlessly, but there is a learning curve to use all the benefits of Fonality

Training was excellent, but most of what they had was webinars and not real world situation for our company's need. It would be better to have them remote in my local computer and test my system using inbound / outbound calls. This would have made it easier to learn and more relevant

Everything from the installation to the implementation has been great with Fonality, there is a lot of freedom to how the system will operate but the freedom comes at a cost of more technical experience to make sure it is configured correctly. The staff is very helpful can will make sure that the system is setup correctly and work perfectly.

Alternatives Considered

8x8 Virtual Office

8 x 8 is the first VOIP service we have used and are so happy with the service we have not looked for service elsewhere.

Fonality has the lowest cost of ownership and that is the main reason we stay with fonalty. The features are acceptable, as I said before some things could be better like the call recording is a manual process. I did not orginally choose fonality but whenever I tried to replace it the other PBX's cost more and I could not get the owner to agree to switch to another PBX

Scalability

We've had periods where our organization has grown a considerable amount and we have had no issues in scaling our communications with 8x8. The number of possible extensions that we can use is far more than we expect to go through in a very long time. The only complaint that I have is a very minor inconvenience for me where I have to download activation codes for each phone. I would prefer to have the phones automatically activated as soon as they are plugged in.

Return on Investment

8x8 Virtual Office

  • The cost of the 8 x 8 system is less expensive than traditional phone systems and offers so much more which allowed us to put more money into advertising the business.
Kristi Saxon profile photo

NetFortris (formerly Fonality)

  • Cost of ownership is low, we have looked at other phone systems and they seem to always cost more
  • Dropped call is a big problem, we still have this issue and when a customer complains that the rep hung up you need to call Fonalty to get them to tell you how the call disconnected
  • Allthough it is a manual process the call recording function is very useful as we can listen to a call to determine what really happened during that call that the customer is complaining about
  • The call foward feature has a lot of choces and functions, like when to foward, where to foward
  • ** Big negative ++ you can not use the foward function to answer calls in a queue, it must be a physical phone on the pbx to take queue calls. You can take other direct calls on a cell phone but no queue calls on a cell phone.
