AdMob

As for technology and implementation... I think they are superb. But in today's world you can't go around doing whatever you want to stroke your own ego. You have to care for your clients & communicate with them. AdMob loses all respect there. I understand banning those illegal click farm guys in Asia/Africa, but banning a developer in Europe who has nothing to do with click farms, and then refraining to verify their own data collection is absolutely nauseating.

Webtrends Analytics

I would ask who their client is, what their objectives are and what type of data they are most interested in analyzing. Also, how tight of turnarounds do you have? Webtrends needs a LONG time to turn complex projects around, especially if you are thinking about multi-touch attribution -> forget about it if you need anything less than 6 months.

Pros

  • Well it works really well.
  • No complaints about their technical backing.
  • They do take the pain so your implementation is fairly easy.

Cons

  • Theyre customer service is by far the worst ever.
  • They have to stop banning user accounts for no reason. They have been wrong on so many counts, it just will make you wonder which primary school student is giving them info to make such horrendous decisions.
  • Their high handedness is handling cases, they keep giving copy paste client servicing replies, won't own up to it being their fault, and leave you in a lurch absolutely unbothered. This is a black spot on Google.
  • They keep sending you emails with warnings about stuff you haven't even dreamed of doing. Saying absolutely shady stuff like "asking your family to click on ads for you is an invalid activity" What will I earn out of that, 25cents after a 1000clicks? Do you think my 80yr old granny has the energy to keep clicking something for 1000times?
  • They never have the courage to accept they've made a mistake and they may have collected some invalid data without considering all of the circumstances. And if you try to draw their attention to that, they give you a deaf ear. It is really sad, for such an amazing product. The attitude sucks big time.

  • The product itself was very slow (9) or buggy (10)
  • The ability to create new custom reports complex (consultant needed and can not apply historical data without replay)
  • The possibility to drill-down data limited and not dynamic (segments, funnels, goals)
  • The UI is rudimentary (9) or visually overwhelming (10) without thinking about functionality (advanced segmentation)

The v9 admin interface and v10 reporting interface work as well as expected, but have a tendency to be pokey, especially for bulky reports and whenever you're connected to wifi. I much prefer using the REST API for all reporting for this reason, which simply dumps out the data and doesn't bother with the user interface.

Most of the time even highly complex issues are handled on the same call. I want to cite one support rep, Marlo, by name because he is phenomenally through and a product expert. When he answered my calls I felt better immediately.

Careful planning and patience. Use a non-public test site to fine tune tags and reporting. Despite best laid plans, there will be surprises when you collect the data, run the analysis and begin generating reports using the tool. Perform a tag audit to ensure tags fire as desired.

Alternatives Considered

Better rates
Reply very often.
No fake copy paste customer service.
No high handedness in handling cases, they always listen.. And then make decisions, they never brand you a self clicker and ban your account when you are innocent

I actually did not personally select Webtrends, but rather fell into an organization already using the tool. In general, the reasons for staying with Webtrends vs another tool involve the price point issue and the types of users and support needed. You may be able to get all the data you need from Webtrends, but it may not be scalable depending on the application especially if you want it used throughout multiple teams.

Return on Investment

  • Before I got into it my other friends told me there are way better Ad providers. But being a Google fan I still signed up.
  • Now I remember writing to AdMob, requesting them to give me earning rates... But they never replied. So zero return on investment. They just keep you guessing.
