Adobe Business Catalyst

Adobe Business Catalyst is an absolute rock-star for companies that want an all in one solution, who have limited budgets and/or little technical expertise. It will scale well and can grow with your company. It is more complex and more flexible than something like Wix, where your options are heavily limited, but less open than WordPress where you can use plug-ins and custom code to rebuild how anything works. So it is a nice area in the middle.Adobe Business Catalyst would probably not be a great solution for companies who want absolute control over their website and everything in it and have highly experienced technical resources to build out whatever they need since not every area of the website or server can be modified.

Umbraco CMS

Umbraco CMS is the perfect tool for a company that is looking to keep their website updated. The simple to use tools and templates means updating and creating new pages is easy. The WYSIWYG editor is a nice feature, however, for accessibility, there should be some more guidance on what is suitable to be used on the CMS.

Pros

  • Probably one of the easiest e-commerce platforms to work in, it does take setup, but compared to a lot of other e-commerce solutions, this is probably the best one that I have seen that can be designed and implemented custom.
  • Their template system works very well and allows you to create and re-use templates across Adobe Business Catalyst.
  • Their pre-built modules are great, giving people a great way to use common web elements without having to use a plug-in or find some solution, it is simply built in and generally works exactly as you would expect.
  • Adobe Business Catalyst is more of an all-around solution, providing elements that most smaller companies would have a hard time figuring out, since it includes the ability to build websites, send and track e-mails, analytics. It really is a powerful tool that would typically require a fair amount of coding knowledge and expertise but with the system already built, it can be easily modified and edited by those with limited or no coding knowledge at all.

  • Umbraco has a lot of design/layout flexibility.
  • Umbraco provides a lot of control for customization.
  • You can maintain your data (product, page, entity) in a structured way.

Cons

  • It is SaaS, so the initial savings can seem costly if the site owner wants to redesign. It is still less costly than having a professional enterprise site built for you, but you will be limited by your budget.
  • It has been a while since I used it, but custom pages for businesses on Facebook was something that needed to be built by a developer and implemented.

  • If you miss an update on the software, issues can happen if you jump to far ahead of where you are
  • Search could be improved on the site

Usability

Adobe Business Catalyst9.7

Overall it is a "plug and play" interface. The majority of the work is done in other software interfaces. Managing billing, user roles and custom reports are all that you need to manage in the actual BC user interface. For my business this is an incredible benefit as I have to leave my preferred software less.

Working in the admin panel (adding / reviewing / editing content) is very slow. The public facing site speed is dependent on what the pages are doing and how well the code was written (whether it is optimized for speed).

Support

Adobe Business Catalyst8.6

The support provided by Adobe is excellent. Though the knowledge base, forums, blogs and online chat questions most all answers can be found. In the event that you are unable to find an answer or you have a unique situation simply post a question to the forums. These forums are regularly monitored by Adobe and its users.

Spend the time to wireframe the content structure prior to diving in. This helps speed the process of implementation and it serves as documentation for end users.

Alternatives Considered

BC may not be as customizable as these two, but it is a much more of a secure option
Joel Lowther profile photo
Umbraco vs WordPressUmbraco has more flexibility and customization options, but less features, reliability/stability, and community support.WordPress offers less customization for data and content, but it is immensely more stable, has better features /plugins, and includes an enormous amount of community support & documentation.Umbraco vs KenticoBoth are intended to be customized after installation (flexible design and data management)Kentico is more robust, reliable, and feature rich. But, it requires more effort to get a site up and running.Umbraco is less stable than Kentico. But, it is often easier to get a site up and running.

Return on Investment

  • The CMS has been a great tool to use to close a deal.
  • Assists those who do not have much experience with back end programing.
  • The platform is far more secure because of their closed source code than platforms like wordpress or joomla.
Joel Lowther profile photo
  • When used for the appropriate clients, Umbraco typically helps get a customized layout and data structure to market faster than some competing CMS platforms.
  • For clients that may not understand data relationships on the back end, the content management in the admin panel helps them visualize what's happening.
