AdvancedPM (formerly ADP AdvancedMD)

AdvancedMD is appropriate for businesses that desire carte blanche access to the data contained in their entity's database. This is a great system for companies that are data/analytics driven. Unfortunately, the main drawback of the system (inability to accurately track deposit dates of payments) is a CRUCIAL FLAW. If a business is interested in a SIMPLE monthly reconciliation to their bank account, you will struggle with AdvancedMD.

Allscripts Professional EHR

Some of the key questions include functionality of the EHR in today's electronic marketplace. Also customer support ratings are important due to many ongoing difficulties previously experienced with older EHRs. Allscripts is well suited to the outpatient setting where many preformed templates provide a comprehensive overview of patients. Additionally, Allscripts' link with the imaging portal PACS is second to none.

Pros

  • They provide access to their underlying tables via Open Database Connection (ODBC). This streamlines business intelligence processes greatly.
  • The "canned"/"stock" business intelligence tool (Advanced Insight) is very useful.
  • Our dedicated customer support representative (Breah Teed) has exceeded our expectations.

  • Imaging and laboratory results were found in Allscripts Professional EHR.
  • Allscripts Professional EHR also provided emergency room history and physicals created by the emergency room physician.
  • Allscripts Professional EHR also provided a conduit to discuss review results with hospital nurse case managers.

Cons

  • They do not currently allow users to "lock down" the date field which represents the date that payments were deposited into a bank account. Users are capable of perpetually changing these dates.
  • They are currently building a process which allows users to reconcile payment data to a source document (typically an entity's bank account). We are eagerly awaiting the roll out of this product.
  • We have had issues at times where undeserving patients were sent to collections due to software or human error (no true cause was ever found).

  • Cannot order supplies like breast pumps, abdominal binders etc
  • Printing ultrasound reports is difficult
  • Cannot open more than 1 prenatal record or you lose data

Alternatives Considered

I love that ADP AdvancedMD is web-based and you can use it from anywhere you have internet access. Support is available 8am-8pm EST, so someone is always there to help if needed. I'm excited about the ICD-10 tools they are giving clients to assist with that process. They do regular software updates and listen to client feedback when deciding what updates to perform and the updates are no cost to the clients

It was already in use when I was hired. I have mostly figured it out just messing around with it in my earlier spare time.

Return on Investment

  • Our ability to integrate with our BI tool via ODBC has had an immense positive effect on our business.
  • Our bank reconciliation has struggled mightily since switching to AdvancedMD.

  • We were able to eliminate our medical records person once most of the scanning was completed. Now when a patient asks for their medical records, it's easy for anyone to print it out right away. Our transcriptionist position was eliminated too.
  • Our documentation of medication refills is much more streamlined. Our clinical department no longer has one person assigned to address refills all day. We all just address them between patients. The check in process changed quite a bit for the medical assistant. Whereas before, the medical assistant would take the vitals, review the med list, then leave the rest of the documentation to the provider (and the transcriptionist would do the rest); the medical assistant now builds the chart before the provider goes in to see the patient (i.e. vitals, reason for visit, history, updating medication list)
  • With the elimination of medical records and transcription, we absorbed them on the front line. In order to see the same amount of patients and complete the documentation at the time of visit, it has required more manpower at the time of service. We have the same amount of employees as we did with our paper charting.
