Anaplan

We are really excited and looking forward to exploring the forecasting, and "What If" scenarios. Our current business structure makes it very difficult to forecast and project at any level, and I think Anaplan will be a great solution for us.I think for any business that has multiple, or dynamic, hierarchies Anaplan is a great solution. We have reduced the time spent on these dynamic views by using subsets and properties with in the models.I am looking forward to the increased the communication/connected planning aspect that Anaplan brings to our company. In the past we had thousands of Excel workbooks, some that were too large to email or open. We have seen improved interaction and clear lines of communication for our end users by using Anaplan for our budget process.

Prophix

Most of these comments deal with the limitations of OLAP (Prophix) databases as compared to SQL (Oracle/SAP) databases. OLAP does a great job in driving management to prioritize those metrics and data they need to run and measure their business. This education leads to a much better understanding of the data being provided. A transaction level database is better suited to detailed analysis, but management (in my experience) does a poor job at trying to manage individual transactions instead of understanding what the aggregated numbers are saying. Also, management can not plan at a highly detailed level because the business is moving too fast. That is where Prophix (OLAP) allows management to create a plan at the right level of detail which can be reported and managed.More well suited:
  • Multiple scenario reporting
  • Excel template generation
  • Finance ownership and management - takes some training but well worth the flexibility
  • Finance, Sales, Operations
Less well suited:
  • Highly detailed reporting outside of Detailed Planning Manager
  • Direct Excel - SSAS data retrieval
  • HR employee management
  • Transaction level detail analysis

Pros

  • Allows non-technical business-oriented individuals create functionality in the system.
  • Highly customizable.
  • Excellent business partner from a people perspective. Very focused on customer success, not just the next PO.

  • One of the biggest issues we had with our excel budgets was formula's that linked multiple tabs and/or workbooks together either being wrong or getting written over. In Prohpix you write the formula once in the account structure and it cannot be broken by end users.
  • Access rights are granted by users, so we are able to build one sales template for all of our reps to enter budgets and view reports, but they only are able to view the customers assigned to them. This makes updating easy as it all in once place.
  • Prohpix connects direclty through SQL to our ERP data, and thus we are able to schedule automatic nightly imports of that days invoices. Every morning sales can access their updated results on-demand, or we can schedule Prophix to distribute it automatically to those who prefer that.
  • Flexibility in data presentation. Ad-hoc reporting ability allows us to build a data view in Prophix in seconds during a meeting that would take an hour or more to generate all the different reports in our ERP and then consolidate them in excel and still not have the flexibility the cube structure offers.
  • We operate in numerous currencies, Prophix has the ability to create multiple scenarios that we can use a different currency rate on each for our best case vs worst case currency rate analysis to be able to pick one for use on our budget.

Cons

  • Larger workspaces.
  • Ongoing support contracts based on LOE.
  • Better formula support and explanation within the model.
Michael Lauer profile photo
  • Licensing structure is prohibitive to a wider rollout of the product in our organization. Licenses are dedicated to specific users rather than concurrent # of users like our other software systems are. If they were concurrent, we would have all of our managers and supervisors in every department on it.
  • The licensing structure dictates which users can access certain functionalities. The overall structure can only be edited by an administrator license, so there is no handing off of structure changes to others, it has to be an administrator.
  • You can make custom listings of things like top 10 customers overall, or top 20 products in descending order, but it requires writing the formula in the account structure in MDX language, which as an Accountant, I don't have a clue about. If that could be simplified so i could do it myself, i would use those functions more.

The system works well for us, and meets all of our needs. All of our future plans can and will be achieved within Prophix, so there is no need to pursue another product. Prophix has continuously proven to improve their product over the years, which provides an even higher level of confidence in this tool, and future developments

Usability

There is a dependency in this rating - in that I find Anaplan extremely easy to use, but I've spent the necessary time developing a strong understanding of the platform. Once you understand how to use it, the platform is flexible, easy to use, and fun to use.

Performance

Anaplan9.0
Based on 1 answer
Everything is calculated in memory in the cloud. It's nearly instantaneous updates when you make changes. The only time things get a little slow is when you have a massive model with very intricate calculations...but "slow" for Anaplan is not what I would call "slow" for something like Hyperion. We used to have Hyperion calcs that ran for 60 mins before you could use data. The equivalent would be 60 seconds in Anaplan.

Support

Anaplan8.1
Based on 2 answers
I feel like the support team is a little lacking in product knowledge. Several times I have contacted them to get help, and ended up finding a solution to my own problem before the team could get back to me with anything useful. I have also submitted a few bugs, and never got updates to when they were fixed in later releases.

I feel that the Prophix team takes my issue seriously. They do not charge per support ticket, and will even solve complex issues without additional professional service calls. When an issue is beyond the capability of the service technician, they will bring in a solutions architect to help solve the issue. When comparing the agility and timeliness of Prophix's support vs. the support I receive by my ERP, there isn't even a comparison - Prophix wins hands down.

In-Person Training

Anaplan3.0
Based on 1 answer
The in-person training is simply not worth the cost. After a few weeks of playing in Anaplan, I went to the basic training and knew more than the person teaching it. a year down the road, I was the first person to complete the advance training, and again could have been teaching the class better than the person running the session. Spend some time on your own trying out different things and you will get all the understanding you need to be successful.

Online Training

Anaplan5.0
Based on 1 answer
I'm giving this a 5 simply for the anapedia outline of calculations. The online videos and trainings leave a lot to be desired, but having anapedia around to help you understand calculations has been helpful. The drawback to anapedia is the depth they go into for calculations, it is lackluster at times. Because of that, I have been working through a much more in-depth look at each calculation on my website for users to reference: http://www.anaplanguru.com/formulas/

I won't rate this low due to the 3rd party consultant, because overall the implementation with Anaplan went great. We had working models in our first month of having Anaplan, and have been able to branch out into multiple facets of the business in the 3 years since our first implementation.

Alternatives Considered

Honestly, having implemented Anaplan at another company, I knew it would suit our needs here and convinced management to get the tool on that basis. We already use a mix of Cognos BI, Tableau, and Excel ... but our need was something apart from what those can provide.

Prophix stacks up well against the competition. We selected Prophix since they were able to provide a great presentation. Also, they managed the project well and they have strong consultants who helped implement the solution quickly. They also, continue to evolve by upgrading features based upon customer feedback. They have strong customer support and always try to help deliver a solution for any problems we report. I also like the fact they offer training for some features such as dashboard reporting. I received training from one of their consultants and I am now able to develop additional dashboard reports for my organization.

Scalability

Anaplan7.0
Based on 1 answer
It's going to handle most of what you can throw at it. The problem lies in the sparsity of some datasets. When you have over 5ish dimensions of sparse data, the size of the model gets bloated for not much value. In several cases, I have had to adapt my model to account for sparsity in a way that minimized use of space, but also made interacting with the data more cumbersome.

We are a medium sized company, but the structure of Prophix would seemingly adapt to whatever sized organization you have. It also can be applied in any area of an enterprise that needs performance management, whether it involves financial data or not. The potential for application within the enterprise is really only limited by you imagination.

Return on Investment

  • I'm sure the impact is positive. We have streamlined many processes and created capacity for our finance team.
  • It's great to have "one source of truth" and know that everyone is looking at the same metrics.
Kelley Haghighi profile photo
  • One version of the truth.
  • Closing month-end within days.
  • Death of Excel.
  • More in-depth analysis on variances.
