I would not recommend this product to anyone. This product is hard to manage, requires development in house which becomes expensive. The tool itself is extremely expensive for the features it delivers. And ultimately, the sales "bait and Switch" will occur on you, which will require you to buy more licenses or add-ins that were not planned on to get the desired feature set.

SalesLoft

I've been recommending SalesLoft for each of the startups I've worked at or have consulted for. It is a great tool for sales teams. And even for customer success teams as well as Accounts Management teams. I recommend that it be used alongside LinkedIn Sales Navigator and to also leverage the additional addons like CrystalKnows as well. It should be used to help with Social Selling in Linkedin (sharing articles via Owler) and also for understanding customers with CrystalKnows.

Pros

Apttus

  • Apttus CPQ handles complex pricing rules with ease. We have tiered pricing, user based pricing, and quantity pricing discounts. Apttus CPQ allows us to easily provide correct pricing based on attributes of the sales rep, the customer and the product.
  • Apttus CPQ administration is easy compared to similar products. As a product available on the Force.com platform, we were able to cross train our Salesforce administrators and take on the additional administrative overhead without significantly increasing our sales operations team size.
  • Apttus CPQ is flexible. We are able to rapidly test and deploy new pricing models and offers using the Apttus model.

  • Cadence set up, automation, and workflow: It is easy to set up a personal or a Team cadence for a particular campaign or persona message. Steps can be automated with handy options to pick when automated emails will be sent, when contacts will be taken out of the cadence (if they reply or their email bounces) and so on.
  • Advanced automation rules allow you to trigger Cadence actions based on changes to other data fields, such as a particular Salesforce contact field. We use this to automatically add contacts to a cadence when a specific field in Salesforce is changed (a picklist of potential cadence options).
  • Add on benefits like integration to Crystal to help you know what type of language to use with your target contact, Owler for news and insights on companies you're reaching out to, and a pretty good account management/support team.

Cons

Apttus

  • As a SAAS solution with a large amount of R&D being invested, there is functionality that is becoming standard in the platform that previously would have required some customer customization. The incorporation of the standard functionality will require regression testing and migration off of custom code. In the long term this is a positive, but in the short term does create some overhead with testing.

SalesLoft

  • Tracking of emails. The location and device in which the prospect is, is not always accurate. It is not a huge deal and does not impact the bottom line for us but would be a nice to have.
  • SalesLoft launches a lot of new features. It is sometimes difficult to keep up with all of them.
  • Allow more than 1,000 emails to be sent per day per account and also more than 500 leads imported at one time would be helpful.

It is critical to our sales process. We are not satisfied with all aspects of the product and have gone through many tough experiences with their PS, support, and PD teams -- but we're not unhappy enough to re-build what we're already built

The renewal really depends on who the client is. SalesLoft works for some clients better than others.

SalesLoft is a fantastic product that will be extremely helpful to any Sales Rep looking to organize their information and stay one step ahead. While it has its shares of quirks and bugs it proves to be an awesome tool for anyone that is in the sales industry.

As a native Salesforce.com app, it's up as long as Salesforce.com is running.

Tier1/tier 2 support can only handle native functionality. Customizations have to be escalated to developers which aren’t included in the support program.

I go ahead and copy the people I directly worked with on implementation for assistance. I would rate them an 8 for support assistance.

We attended 5 hours worth of webinars early on.

We had to understand how objects worked to figure out how to structure our data.

I would have liked more in-depth training but it would have been an additional cost

Be iterative. Take the opportunity to build a catalog based on how Apttus works well. Learn the tool yourself or use an SI. Take the time to build a configuration / pricing migration tool with X-Author for Excel or roll your own. Stick with OOTB Apttus as any customization will cost you every time a new version is released

Alternatives Considered

Apttus

At the time of selection, we assessed other configuration tools to include Selectica and Big Machine. We decided on Apttus because of it configuration flexibility and the fact that it was built on the Salesforce.com platform. That allowed us to configure and customize for our specific use case. It also gave us other capabilities such as integration to the CRM and ability to generate reports and dashboards

SalesLoft is a competitor to InsideSales.com. I love the native integrations InsideSales provides, but I more love the account based targeting that SalesLoft better supports. If you want a more direct integration where you can use automation features within Salesforce, InsideSales is much better. But if you need more automation and not caring if it's native or not in SFDC, SalesLoft is much better

Return on Investment

Apttus

  • I cannot speak to lead conversion because we used it solely for the CRM component. I did like the reporting functionality, which was very customizable, so if I wanted to know how many customers agreements were terminating 3 months out, I could run a report for that. This made our lives much better.

SalesLoft

  • Employee Efficiency - this is huge for us. As I explained earlier, our team went from manually importing data into our CRM to being able to easily transfer a prospect into our CRM.
  • Qualifying Leads - since it uses Linkedin and Google to gather information, it is often very accurate when being compared to other lead generation sources.
  • Cost Effective - from a budget standpoint, it serves as a very affordable lead generation tool.
