Bamboo

If you value integration over cost, Bamboo is clearly the way to go. It offers tight integration to the rest of the Atlassian suite, and when you need traceability from issue to build, Atlassian is the right way to go. However, if you find yourself needing to save on costs, you may consider taking an approach of rolling your own build system with open source alternatives, such as Jenkins, if you don't [mind] putting in a little extra elbow grease.

Namely

Namely Human Resources module works well. It looks nice and employee experience is easy. however, people who use the system every day such as payroll and HR team members, it can be painful. The payroll portal is not great. It is hard to correct errors. You can't import updates to information on this side of the system. You have to depend on Namely to make updates for you. The system is not super configurable. Custom fields and calculations are worthless. If and employee cancels medical and payroll has already run, in order to correct it and return funds, you cannot just put a negative medical amount on the next pay period. Namely has to void the check. then you have to enter a misc deduction for amount of the original check. then, you have to cut a new check. then you have to remove the misc deduction. It is a complete pain.

Pros

Bamboo

  • Levels of granularity. Organization has many projects that have many build plans that have many jobs that have many tasks, etc. And branch builds allow source control branches to be built separately.
  • Versatility. I can use bamboo to manage my Java, node, or .NET build plans. I can use it to spin up Windows or Linux build agents, or install it on a Mac to build there as well.
  • Bamboo integrates with other Atlassian products like Bitbucket, Stash, JIRA, etc. If a company commits to the entire Atlassian stack then work can be tracked through the whole development lifecycle which is really useful.

Namely

  • Customer Support.
  • With the new Namely service pod models, issues are handled quickly and a timely manner. Communications with our organization's service pod team is very easy.
  • Ease of Use for End Users.
  • From experience with other HRIS systems, many employees I worked with have a hard time navigating the system. With Namely's user-friendly interface, our employees adapted to the system quickly. Our employees usually don't have questions or concerns about the use of the system.
  • Easy Payroll Processing.
  • This was my first job where I am responsible for payroll processing. I received all the support I needed when setting up our payroll system two years ago. Currently, the payroll system is so easy to use that payroll processing is a breeze for us.

Cons

Bamboo

  • Extremely hard barrier to entry for non-backend developers
  • Blackbox makes it hard to customize functionality
  • The inability to add features without breaking core functionality
  • No cloud solution
  • Tasks cannot be put in if/else statements
  • No clear right way to form build plans
Jonathan Kempf, UXC | TrustRadius Reviewer

Namely

  • No centralized data platform which creates a ton of disparate data processes and errors
  • Does not sufficiently support the most basic employee lifecycle processes and pay practices.
  • Customer support is challenging since there seems to be a huge disconnect with the Namely teams. They don't seem to interact and work together.
  • Namely is constantly "improving" their platforms but does not always communicate the changes to customers. We're often surprised by changes in functionality.
  • Inadequate reporting for very common HR and payroll reports.

Administrators and employees love Namely. It is very easy to use and streamlined. Employees stay engaged with news feed updates and enjoy all the self service options. The time cards are very easy to access and clocking in and out for non-exempt employees is a breeze. Namely is part of our family.

Bamboo was fairly easy to navigate but in the end it always felt as if it was developed as a bolt-on and not a true group up user interface. There were multiple ways to get to everything and the path was never the same. So it was difficult for users to really get a feel of how to use the application.

Payroll is pretty user friendly and so is running payroll reports. The benefits enrollment is pretty clear and easy to understand. The details behind the benefits and what it will cost per payroll is structured so that it is clear to each user. They used to have a great support system but they recently switched to a ticketing system and it is not as user friendly

Atlassian support is also great for all its offerings including Bamboo. However, we feel that Bamboo does not get as much love as some of their more popular offerings such as Jira and Confluence, and it sometimes takes a bit longer for issues and feature requests to get addressed in comparison.

Unfortunately, in more recent years we've had a lot of difficulty with Namely as they've undergone a lot of internal changes. It took 4 returned emails saying the person no longer worked at Namely to find someone to help me (I finally called payroll) and it took a while to get connected with a direct source of help. Namely now has set up their "pod" feature of communication which works well for the most part, but is different. I felt spoiled when we first started with Namely, but now it feels very much like working with most large companies' help centers. There is a system to go through and you do have the option to click "urgent". In general the help is efficient, but it still takes a few days and it's hard to speak with someone directly. It is all done via online communications and is difficult to actually speak to someone on the phone. This works well for most cases, but I do feel frustrated more often than I'd like to with this type of communication. (2019/2020)

It went smoothly, but there were many requests I had on reporting, tracking, etc that were never put into place. I would have set these things up myself but we were also never told how to do it. They ran a parallel payroll test, or said they did, but when I audited our first payroll, there was a lot wrong with it (taxes, deductions, etc) that required a ton of manual adjustments on the next payroll.

Alternatives Considered

Bamboo

Bamboo's ability to integrate with Bitbucket and Jira (the other two key systems we use) pretty much sealed the deal on our decision to choose Bamboo over other alternatives. Being able to map every build result back to the relevant code changes and Jira issues are just too valuable for us.

We switched from Paycom to Namely after using Paycom for just one year. We had some many issues and let-downs in our first year with Paycom that we decided it would be less painful to switch platforms than to give Paycom a second season. Namely was at the top of our list of viable replacements due to positive word of mouth from other companies in Chicago.Namely blows Paycom out of the water. The user interface is much more sleek and intuitive. Paycom required two separate logins for employees that were also "users" (ie. supervisors, managers, etc.). Our teams hated having two different logins for the same site. Namely is role-driven. If an employee is also a manager, they can access their additional functions from one account. We also had a myriad of support issues with Paycom. PTO balances in particular were a disaster. Follow-up was terrible, and we ended up manually reconciling a lot of data sets as we transitioned to Namely.

Return on Investment

Bamboo

  • It helped us achieve the Continuous Deployment and Continuous Integration goals for our applications, a huge milestone that saved a lot of time for developers in making the builds and deployments and saved time for QA in running the automated tests.
  • Helped with DevOps: we moved the formal approval from the email to the system and allowed the approver to actually push the button for the production deployments.
  • Biggest positive impact of using Bamboo is that it improved our response time to customers and increased the frequency of our deliveries to them.
Cristian Bodnarasec | TrustRadius Reviewer

Namely

  • More labor intensive (cost us more money to switch to this product).
  • Decline in reporting capability (payroll general ledger report is a nightmare every 2 weeks).
  • Product cost is way too high for services delivered. It was the worst financial investment we have made in years.
