Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)

I can tell that ISR 4541 can be suited perfectly for an environment like the one we have for internet connectivity. It supports O365, DMZ, Zscaler GRE tunnels, VPNs, all of them with 0 issues during more than 4 years, these models are also installed on our network for hybrid connection MPLS and internet circuit.

Juniper Enterprise Routers

There's a vast number of options, so you can implement Juniper Routers in any scenario. Of course, the enterprise option is not for the small company, unless they need room to grow. Bring it on for your highest amount of bandwidth, Service Providers that need to peer with many different operators using BGP sessions, or as your Border or Core Network, and you won't regret it.

Pros

Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)

  • Easy to use, simple to operate, highly predictable. IOS/IOS-XE is well known and there is a virtually limitless pool of engineers who know this platform and if not having direct experience, can apply knowledge from other IOS/IOS-XE with very little adjustment.
  • Extremely flexible due to wide variety of interfaces. NIM and SM-X provide a great deal options: TDM, E&M, FXO, FXS, switches and servers are all options.
  • Robust IP feature set: Routing protocols, NBAR, Netflow, QoS, DMVPN. This large IP feature set gives us the ISR makes it a highly re-usable router, capable in many different use cases.

Cons

Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)

  • Consolidate sd-wan + voice gateway features in the same hardware. Voice gateway is a key feature for us as well as sd-wan.
  • Reduce the cost of the solution. Sometimes the business is not strong enough to invest in it, which breaks our strategy.
  • Sometimes it’s hard to identify what’s the best product for each situation. For example: what’s the benefit of using a router instead of an encs?

Juniper Enterprise Routers

  • The initial routing settings aren't very obvious, even for the serious users
  • The Web interface is not so complete, so one needs to get a grip on the command line

We have consistently be very happy with Cisco TAC support whenever we've had to open cases. The one negative we've encounter with regards to the Cisco ISR 4000 series routers, in particular, is that compared to the previous routers we've used (Cisco ISR 2800, 3800, 2900 and 3900 series) we've had to upgrade code more frequently. Part of this may be due to the added complexity and/or running IOS-XE instead of IOS, but it has definitely been the case.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)

The 4300 is much more cost effective for medium sized branch offices, which do not require the horsepower of an ASR. Compared to an ASA, the ISR does not really compare, since it is not a dedicated firewall. Using the IOS firewall would not be an ideal solution, but it would work in a pinch.

Both products are great, even the CLI is very alike in both products. We chose Juniper for its reliability and support.

Return on Investment

Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)

  • The CSRv router has caused us to look at functions, features, and solutions outside of our enterprise standard due to cost of Cisco license and then AWS costs on top of it.
  • Meraki MX devices have given us an easy solution to several of our sites where we don't own the building or the infrastructure. In those cases we can deploy the device with cellular service and continue to operate as normal. All of the other ideas were significantly more expensive and all came with more limitations.
  • Using the MX device as a VPN concentrator has been a huge success. Using the Meraki devices to handle the vpn overhead has reduced the workload on the laptop, reduced user error while remote, and improved stability. It also allows for metrics and visibility to assist remote workers with more confidence and ease.

Juniper Enterprise Routers

  • We're saved over 35% upgrading the Network to Juniper.
  • There's a learning curve to get used the command line, so learn it before getting your hands on a Juniper Router. It's worth it, and you'll see your ROI immediately.
