Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)
With many WAN connections, Cisco ISR 4000 Series is a good fit for large businesses. It can be used to automatically switch between different internet connections. It's capable of managing everything from computation services to virtual private networks (VPNs). The Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Routers are very capable. Its ability to establish site-to-site VPNs has also been beneficial to us. This router line is something I definitely recommend.

As an edge/WAN router that contains internet BGP routes, it handles this work very well. And the devices are robust, able to manage a significant load. However, the interface cost can be somewhat of a hindrance when wanting to use it to interconnect many metro clients.

Pros
Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)
- Easy to use, simple to operate, highly predictable. IOS/IOS-XE is well known and there is a virtually limitless pool of engineers who know this platform and if not having direct experience, can apply knowledge from other IOS/IOS-XE with very little adjustment.
- Extremely flexible due to wide variety of interfaces. NIM and SM-X provide a great deal options: TDM, E&M, FXO, FXS, switches and servers are all options.
- Robust IP feature set: Routing protocols, NBAR, Netflow, QoS, DMVPN. This large IP feature set gives us the ISR makes it a highly re-usable router, capable in many different use cases.

Cons
Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)
- Super expensive to purchase and maintain licensing for
- Even with a big player like Cisco you get bugs in the software but hey, at least they're quick to fix them
- Sometimes you do feel like guinea pigs testing out beta software

- I would like to able to find more examples of configs. Given the multiple ways to configure the same setting, having a little more documentation would be helpful.
- I wish the FPCs and interfaces were cheaper.

Very easy to use, and very effective on our environment. Scalable, stable, and can support all routing protocols needed in most manufacturing environments. The security license is very effective.

There is always room for improvement with support, but Cisco support has been good to me over the years. Being able to call or submit online TAC cases makes it so I can get my issues or questions answered faster. They have even added the TAC bot for TAC cases to get to support even faster!

Juniper support is friendly, easy to understand, widely knowledgeable, and easy to get ahold of. I did not give them a higher rating as some of my more complex issues, were solved by myself while under consultation from Juniper TAC.

Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)
We did not compare the Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers to other competitors as we used Cisco for a long period of time already. We selected this product as we used a lot of CISCO products in the past and with good support. Other products don't have the protocols that CISCO products have.

Both products are great, even the CLI is very alike in both products. We chose Juniper for its reliability and support.

Return on Investment
Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)
- We have had several times where we purchased assets and needed to add a remote site quickly for new staff to work. This is very quick to spin up and provides agility to business demands
- Allows for agility to failover network access when primary Internet services fail. We have near 100% uptime due to the ISR configuration we use. Even in the most remote locations.
- Since we adopted Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000) as our de facto WAN hardware, we have cookie-cuttered our WAN infrastructure, which makes it easy to manage, upgrade, and alter with minimal impact to users and IT.

- We're saved over 35% upgrading the Network to Juniper.
- There's a learning curve to get used the command line, so learn it before getting your hands on a Juniper Router. It's worth it, and you'll see your ROI immediately.
