Moz

Moz is fantastic for keyword-centric, rankings-focused clients. It also offers fun extras that clients love such as SERP features, and a great competitor-comparison angle for specific keywords. For clients who want to see how keywords fluctuate in rankings over time, Moz is an excellent tool to make this tracking as effortless as possible

Ubersuggest

Ubersuggest is a good tool to get basic insight into your website's position in Google and keywords. You can make big lists with suggestions around a specific keyword, questions, and comparison of keywords. When you first open the page, it's really easy to navigate and use, so it's perfect for beginners. And it's still powerful enough for advanced users. If you are a small company with only a handful of clients, that's okay. But if you are bigger, then there are better and more complete tools on the market if you want more functionality and more in-depth information, like better competition research, ad spying, etc.

Pros

Moz

  • Keyword Explorer has excellent filtering options and a great recommendation engine around related terms.
  • The On-Page Grader is an excellent gut check when publishing new service pages and blog posts.
  • Domain Authority has always served as an easily digestible number to assess how we're doing in our optimization efforts, as well as assessing competitors or outreach targets.

  • Keyword research.
  • Competition ranking.
  • Company website content ideas.

Cons

Moz

  • Link building is not a core strength for MOZ. But I think they've recognized this and found a company (STAT) to join up with to strengthen that area.
  • I think they've missed how useful Rank Tracker is to a lot of their users. I would like to see them spend some time on the UX of this feature to improve it because the base concept is worthwhile. I started looking into alternate solutions when I heard it was going away--solutions that would have taken my budget away from MOZ. It was a relief to see them roll back their decision to remove its functionality.
  • I would like to see more capability to be able to track ranking for keyterms for desktop and mobile as separate metrics. I know there is a difference, but I have no definitive insights other than my manual tracking, which for local is not very accurate when I'm trying to promote a site in Portland and am based in the Midwest.

Ubersuggest

  • Nothing really--it's complete as it is for the price.
  • Numbers are not always correct but this is basic with multiple tools.
  • They could add a page scan to see how well a page scores.

We've been paying monthly for Moz for at least four years. We rely heavily on it for our daily work, and would need to re-engineer many of our processes if we were to cancel our subscription. I suspect we'll continue to use Moz as long as we are in business (assuming they maintain their quality).

It's really easy to use. The interface is nice and tidy, and the learning curve is low. So it's a tool that's accessible for everyone. If not, there are plenty of guides in the tool itself or on the website. You can easily make lists and export data for use or to share, connect Google Drive, and go work with a team.

I have not had a ton of interaction with the support team. Mostly asking questions where I cannot find the answer or where the data did not quite make sense. I always use their easy to access chat feature to talk to support. They are very responsive and very well informed and can usually solve my issue with just one chat session.

Alternatives Considered

Moz

I've recently noticed we're using SEM Rush a whole lot more nowadays for rank tracking. In fact, it's the first time we've gone to the highest package across multiple client accounts due to the ability to plot rankings amongst competitors in a cool visual way, the ability to categorize keywords by tags, and the nice UI improvements they have made.

Ubersuggest

It's on the cheaper side, so for starters on a budget, you can use the free version or the cheaper paid one. Other tools offer way more functions but can also be overwhelming that way. Ubersuggest is going with the times. If you are a beginner or small company, use Ubersuggest. If you are bigger and need WAY more information than the basic research go for tools like SEMRush and Ahrefs.

Return on Investment

Moz

  • I can't answer that question accurately as I don't have access to the budgetary metrics of our business.
  • I can say it's certainly helped us glean insight into HOW to gain a positive ROI, but can't attest to the true figures because I simply don't know.

Ubersuggest

  • We created content based on recommendations and it became an evergreen content.
