Reliable, powerful, and expensive

Company was using a dated version of Symantec backup exec and tapes. I wanted to get away from tape and have less user intervention needed.

Unitrends--dependable, reliable and forward thinking.

The Unitrends appliance replaced the Vembu backup product, which is software that was installed on our device. We provided the storage capacity, and Vembu handled the backup processes. There was no "archive" feature to copy the backups to an external device, which is a non-negotiable for our organization. A workaround was used during the use of the Vembu product, but it was not ideal.

Set it and forget it backups!

Tape was a lot of manual work.

Unitrends backs you up!

We were using a very old version of Symantec Backup Express. It was severely out of date, out of support and running on a physical box with the same flaws. We were also connecting eSATA hard drives (footballs) to "archive" the backups offsite. It was a messy, old system so we looked to replace it.

Unitrends - the best kept secret in backup

IBM Spectrum protect (TSM) and Veeam.
Spectrum protect creates too many complications though it is the swizz army knife of backup, it just takes too much time and energy to run and manage.
Veeam is too simplistic though and can only handle VM backups well.
Both products are also comes with a pretty high price tag.
Unitrends is simpler than both Veeam and TSM.
It is cheaper as well.
And finally it is also much more flexible than Veeam - in our case it can replace both products and make operations simpler and give us new options like completely automated DR testing.

A great system with easy to use management portal.

Backup Exec. The Cost for Backup Exec and all the modules needed was expensive. When you add in the number of tapes needed to keep at least fourteen days of backups added even more to the cost of the solution. After looking into the Unitrends product it cost a little less and it was a all in one solution.

The Recovery Series appliance replaced Symantec Backup Exec 2010. As a nonprofit we got a killer deal on Backup Exec; all options and features for $125.00. When it came time to replace the product, our revenue exceeded the limit of the program from which we received the discounted software. We needed an enterprise class solution that had cloud replication capabilities, supported the XenServer hypervisor, and fit within our price range. Unitrends fit all the requirements.

Nothing but love! Great option for a small/mid mixed use environment (physical & virtual)

Symantec Backup Exec combined with Quantum LTO-5 tape library.
The long backup/recovery windows, high failure rates, poor recovery performance, and lack of virtualization support all led us to find a replacement to 1990's technology.

Unitrends, the choice for DR

We chose Unitrends to replace our Backup Exec system. Backup Exec is a cumbersome, slow product that takes hours of management. I was spending close to 4 hours per day managing Backup Exec. With Unitrends, [I spent] no more than 1 hour a day and that was only when there was a failure.

We replaced a tape library backup system that was undersized and outdated.The goal was to put in place a system that can grow with us and meet our needs to backup and restore as well as meet an audit requirement for DR or offsite storage.

Norton Backup Exec was used with a local tape solution. The system was unreliable and each server had to be managed individually. Tape was always a cumbersome solution, this was our chance to move to a better system with higher reliability and a single interface for all managed servers.

Cost Effective Backup Solution

Before unitrends we used tape backups that were physically located on each server. Some servers just used external hard drives for their backup solution. The Unitrends appliance has worked much better.
