Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Dropbox for storing small files and documents. We file share across collaborators on our team, and sometimes request files from those outside of our team.

Pros and Cons

syncing with the mac desktop and operating system
making files accessible quickly while working remote
clear indication of file permissions

unable to share files outside of my organization easily I've found
backup is redundant for me, and the backup pages on the web version are confusing

Alternatives Considered

Microsoft SharePoint, OneDrive and Google Drive

I like the ease of sharing links from Dropbox to point someone directly to a file. There are virtually no steps to locating a file, whereas from our main server we have to connect through CiscoWeb and then login to the server.

Dropbox works well for teams that need to share files with each other or access each other's files either on the web or within a desktop. It does not work as well for those who rely heavily on Microsoft office products such as word, where if you are editing a file live, in my experience you are required to download the file and save a separate version for tracking changes. It wouldn't work if multiple people are editing the same document at the same time in my opinon. We have not tried to sync our photo library with Dropbox but the cost of file storage seems to be prohibitive.
