Overall Satisfaction with Linode

We use Linode for hosting a variety of websites across different servers. We need to be able to scale up and down the server depending on the load (a few days a year we have hundreds/thousands of users, and only a handful the rest of the year). Linode enables that without having to redesign the existing site for use elsewhere. We can also spin up additional servers effectively on-demand as needed.
  • Reliability
  • Ease of setup
  • Technical guides
  • Scaling up and down servers as required due to expected activity.
AWS whilst perfectly fine would require a fairly radical rewrite of the code that exists all ready to fit in with the way AWS works, and we simply don't have the resources for that sort of rewrite and learning how to use AWS in general as it is very complicated. Linode by comparison is much simpler to understand, however, there is a slightly longer time to scale up and down.
Very quick and helpful responses on the occasion I have had to use it, which is thankfully rare!
A basic server is very affordable and does the job, what more would you want from it? All the signing and dancing higher spec-ed machines cost more but it scales predictable as required. Most of the time we run on a couple of smaller server for example to reduce costs through the rest of the year.
We've had very few issues with connectivity as a whole with Linode. There are occasional routing issues, we are kept notified about those via the optional signup status update emails so we are aware if there are possibly going to be any issues affecting the status. These have all been fixed very quickly though on the occasion that they do happen.
A cost-effective server is needed for a business that goes beyond basic website hosting needs (eg. additional scripting required in the background). Somebody needs to understand how to use Linux in order to set it up, but at the point, that sort of scripting is needed, that is presumably already the case!
