Overall Satisfaction with OneDrive

Even though our company uses Office 360, there is no company wide policy for using of OneDrive as default file sharing and storage system. Every user has access to their own OneDrive directory. Most people use it to share files with other employees. I use it mostly to share files between many devices. I like to have my documentation accessible whenever I need it. Usually when I have ideas about some documentation I need to write, I start writing it at that moment. It can be in train on my way to work. Then I can open the same document on my office machine and continue working on it. I can imagine more people doing the same.
I also use OneDrive with OneNote - taking notes on my phone or Surface, and open them on desktop to review and organize them.

  • Sometimes the files get corrupted, I had a situation on my home desktop PC (Windows 10), where I was not able to sync for a long time. I needed to remove one drive and install clean copy.

Dropbox might be less popular and slower. It is not that well integrated into document editing software (Office or OneNote), but Dropbox has one key (for me) feature that OneDrive does not. In Dropbox you have to upload simple HTML page, share the link to that HTML document and open it in a browser like it is a regular website.
Google Drive has free in-browser document editing software. You don't need install any software to have a simple text or spreadsheet editor. OneDrive should allow something like this as well.
OneDrive is well suited if you work with Microsoft Office on multiple machines. You can start your document on your phone during your commute to work and continue when you get to work. It is also well suited if you have a Surface or other tablet (or phone) that you like to take notes on during meetings, and then want to access these notes on your laptop or desktop machine.

Using OneDrive

OneDrive is still missing some key features. The web interface is pretty well organized, but should have more features. Like Google Drive uses build in web apps for editing documents, I don't want to be forced to download a file every time I want to edit it. Sometimes it is not responsive - it looks like it hanged up.

  • Saving and opening files to OneDrive folders.
  • It (usually) syncs without you even noticing it or any need for any user action.
  • When it stops working (does not sync) it is hard to troubleshoot.
Yes - OneDrive has many mobile apps. Sometimes, it takes time for my Android OneDrive app to log in.
Also the Android app could be better integrated into phone. You should be able to open a Word document in any editor straight from OneDrive and then save it straight back to OneDrive. Sometimes you have to use the share-to function to save back to OneDrive.
The Windows 8 / Windows 10 app could look better. It has typical Windows 8 app view. It is very boring.
