Any business that has workers in multiple locations or workers who are based out for the office for significant periods of time will really benefit from the 8x8 cloud-based system. Your direct line follows you around, but because of the Virtual Attendant, office hours and out of hours can be configured so that you only receive calls when you're "at work."

Articulate Storyline

In an office where you're planning to do a large amount of module-based training, Articulate Storyline will prove useful. A consideration to make, however, is whether your team members focused on training design will have the capacity to learn the software enough to create interesting and effective training modules. The basic functions can be simple, but the more advanced capabilities of the software take considerable effort to master and employ to create the more visually appealing presentations/modules you see in much of the promotional materials. If you have a small training team (or even without anyone dedicated specifically to training and development), Storyline is not a wise choice as the cost and effort required to fully make use of the software would be far too much of a commitment to make it worthwhile.

Pros

8x8 X Series (Formerly Virtual Office)

  • Conference call feature is great. We have created multiple conference bridges, we even have one tied to our virtual attendant.
  • We like the flexibility of the auto attendant and being able to have more than one profile saved that we can change as needed
  • Having Virtual office was especially great when hurricane Irma came through last year and our office had no power, it allowed us to continue to operate from our cell phones without the customer realizing there was anything different.

  • Storyline integrates with the Canvas LMS fairly seamlessly. There have been a few glitches, but for the most part, the interactions we have created will play directly in the Canvas LMS.
  • Storyline is great for creating short drag and drop interactions for self-reviews or even graded assignments. Its many options for quizzes such as "answer reveal" or using tabs help the student get a different perspective on the content rather than just an "A, B, or C" answer.
  • Storyline is great for tutorials or training sessions. There are many options to help guide the learner (or employee) through a process. it is not just linear, but you can branch the slides based on the answers. A great way to engage the learner or employee.

Cons

8x8 X Series (Formerly Virtual Office)

  • At times call quality with callers outside the 8x8 system at times is poor.
  • Voicemail boxes are not very large, and can fill quickly.
  • A means to mark all received faxes at one time as read within Virtual Office would be nice.
Christopher Alcumbrack | TrustRadius Reviewer

Articulate Storyline

  • I wish that you could customize the UI ribbons to bring features you use frequently to the front and to hide options you rarely use.
  • It would be great if there was a way for non-technical collaborators (SMEs, management, etc) to be able to open a *.story file directly and provide comments. You currently have to publish the course, load it to the LMS, update the LMS, and then hope that users can find it in the LMS. A Storyline Viewer/Previewer standalone application would be awesome.
  • The price is too high for freelancers to purchase and use. I no longer contract and work exclusively for the firm, but even with our resources, the high price limits the number of licenses available to use.

We've had an excellent experience with 8x8 Virtual Office. We have downtime very rarely and the service provided by all reps is excellent. The little quirks that I've mentioned as cons are minor inconveniences but I prefer working like that than hosting our own PBX.

We are moving away from the standalone eCourse model, so depending upon when that shift happens, we might choose not to renew since we won't be supporting eCourses built in Articulate Storyline anymore. As long as we are still selling and supporting those eCourses, we will continue to renew the licenses we have.

I have found both the use, and administration of 8x8 to be very straight forward. After a brief period of familiarization all of my users have found the use of the system quite simple. The system is scalable in some regards as it allows for simple use, or more broad usage of features. You can simply have a desk phone, and use the system like a simple phone. Or you can use the Virtual Office program and app to use all of the features offered.

The basics are easy to learn but you won't get really robust activities from using just the basics. However, if you can invest the time in learning how to use all of Storyline's features, you'll have tremendous learning development power at your fingertips. I do have to say, though, that there is a beautiful logic to how everything in Storyline works. Once you learn a few of the advanced features, you can learn them all because there's a similar underlying logic. The interface is also very appealing and friendly.

In the time I have used 8x8 Virtual Office, the core system has been up and running almost flawlessly though we do have a slight performance degradation from time to time as is expected of cloud software. The one recurring issue for us is that the fax connection is not always functional for outbound messages. We usually have to retry three or four times to get the fax to connect reliably to the destination machine. Once connected, it's smooth sailing.

None of the features that are available slow down the application. The reports (even the ones with hundreds of records) complete very quickly and the web interface as well as the mobile application never struggle to load or complete a task. The analytics will sometimes take some time to reflect the online status of users but it is to be expected due to connection speeds.

Very easy to use. In this day of age, finding a company with a great product, competitive pricing and top ofthe line customer service is hard to do. We found it with 8x8 and look forward to using it for many years to come.We also will be happy to recommend it to anyone else who is looking for suggestions.

They are support-superstars and the software they use for support is excellent too (I don't know what it is). The model they use for support should be followed by all companies. It is a conversation/discussion forum model that shows everyone's questions in a knowledge base capacity so you can get the help you need in a speedy way.

I love the fact that both a demonstration AND text version of the tutorials are available. Our firewall was blocking the demos until I requested my company allow them! Having the text version available still enabled me to learn from the tutorials. They are very well done and informative, and there is a tutorial for just about anything you need to learn to do with Storyline. I have always been more than satisfied with the support and training available to us for all Articulate products and I love the community!

Outside of having to dedicate a powerful enough PC for the installation and having to update Flash in our browsers there really isn't much pain involved in using Articulate. For the most part this is an easy to implement and roll-out product. The installation occurs quickly and smoothly with no additional steps needed.

Alternatives Considered

8x8 X Series (Formerly Virtual Office)

If I had a choice to pick otherwise, I would. I came into the company when they already had 8x8 and it is such an issue. The fact that you have to have the VO AND the VCC open at the same time, llike why? I would definitely not choose them over quite a few companies.

I've used a few other products that are similar to Storyline. Captivate by Adobe is overly complex and frustrating at times, so that's gonna be a "no go" for most users. The addition of these new 360 applications (Rise, Review, etc) makes Articulate the top option when it comes to developing e-learning in my opinion.

We've had periods where our organization has grown a considerable amount and we have had no issues in scaling our communications with 8x8. The number of possible extensions that we can use is far more than we expect to go through in a very long time. The only complaint that I have is a very minor inconvenience for me where I have to download activation codes for each phone. I would prefer to have the phones automatically activated as soon as they are plugged in.

It is easy to train new users and manage content. Being able to import older projects and PPT files makes it very easy to use for a lot of "moonlighters" in our department.

Return on Investment

8x8 X Series (Formerly Virtual Office)

  • We were able to use desk phones we already had minimizing the initial investment.
  • It allowed us to transition to remote work seamlessly when the need arose.
  • Users required less training because the features were similar to other commonly used phone systems.
Bret Miller | TrustRadius Reviewer

Articulate Storyline

  • We have been able to bring our training development in-house with Articulate Storyline. This has reduced the cost substantially of module development from about $120,000 annually to less than $50,000.
  • It is now possible for the subject matter expert to work directly in Articulate Storyline rather than have to work with a third party and try to explain what needs to be developed as far as content.
  • Articulate Storyline has a bit of a learning curve and not everyone takes to it quickly, so although the training development has been brought in-house, there is now a back-log of work for those who use the software!
