Considered Multiple Products
ActiveCampaign
Chose ActiveCampaign
Mailchimp and Constant Contact are more user-friendly and have better customer support. Not that ActiveCampaign's support is bad, they just do not seem to have enough people to cover it all. ActiveCampaign is more robust.
Chose ActiveCampaign
We used Mailchimp before, and it was a simple tool but not great if you want more advanced features. ActiveCampaign allowed us to have access to more advanced features and dive into detailed reporting. We also got access to design tools that allowed us to create more dynamic …
Chose ActiveCampaign
Keap is more expensive. Used it for a bit and then went off it because of price. AWeber is great - for affiliate marketing and more, as is mailer lite. Good for beginners and simple needs when it comes to lower-ticket offers and just the need for an email marketing software. I …
Chose ActiveCampaign
Activecampaign is far more powerful than Mailchimp, with lots of functionality and great engagement tracking. While it is a bit more expensive than Mailchimp, it is perfect for a small or medium business looking to have a professional CMS and CRM without the high costs of …
Chose ActiveCampaign
I moved to ActiveCampaign from Mailchimp. Admittedly, I was using the free version of Mailchimp, but I had numerous episodes of subscriber data NOT being added to Mailchimp, despite using API to integrate with my mailing list. Obviously, I couldn't pay for clicks and not …
Chose ActiveCampaign
I transitioned from Mailchimp to ActiveCampaign because it was so much more user friendly and allowed me to do a lot more in regards to lead magnets than Mailchimp can. For example, ActiveCampaign allows users to sign up for a lead magnet as many times as they like to keep …
Chose ActiveCampaign
ActiveCampaign is streaks ahead of Mailchimp on capabilities. But its user experience lags. I chose AS because of its sophisticated automation capabilities. I don't think I can think of anything I could want to do with email automation, that AC would not be able to handle. But, …
Chose ActiveCampaign
I selected ActiveCampaign because many in the communities I was interacting with recommended it. It is also the software many of the platforms I interact with users and integrate directly via API.

The cost to get started is relatively low for access to automation and tagging …
Chose ActiveCampaign
I used to use the free version of Mailchimp, but it did not allow me to construct automated email marketing campaigns the way I wanted to do it. So I decided to migrate all my list to ActiveCampaign. The migration process was easy enough. I am happy I did it.
Chose ActiveCampaign
The level of sophistication and detail of the automations and segmentation is much higher with ActiveCampaign vs. Mailchimp resulting in much more targeted campaigns. Also, the user experience is so much more intuitive and easier to navigate with ActiveCampaign.
Chose ActiveCampaign
In my opinion, not easy to use. Very limited in regards with features. I think the forms you integrate in webpages are ugly and not fully customizable. for almost the same price I have more features with ActiveCampaign.

I feel more confortable using ActiveCampaign since it is …
Chose ActiveCampaign
Mailchimp simply did not have all the features we were looking for, particularly with regard to list segmenting and automation. ActiveCampaign is more expensive, but it's a big step up for us. I think that Mailchimp is excellent for beginners and those who don't need all the …
Chose ActiveCampaign
ActiveCampaign feels like the professional, empowered and much more fully set up version of MailChimp. I was using MailChimp when I first started my business, but was then introduced to AC, and it's a million times better.
Chose ActiveCampaign
Mailchimp is in a different league to the above platforms.
Chose ActiveCampaign
Salesforce is a beast! The learning involved to use the system is prohibitive. MailerLite is limited in functionality but ConvertKit is a solid alternative. Both are easy to use but clunky to navigate, while ActiveCampaign is logical. Mailchimp is great for small businesses …
Chose ActiveCampaign
You'll be able to accomplish everything you need to with ActiveCampaign. A lot of these platforms distinguish themselves with bells and whistles. If a certain 'luxury' is important to you, then go with the platform that offers it. Generally speaking, they can all get the job …
Chose ActiveCampaign
It's simply intuitive! You know what to do and what you can do by just looking at it. So it goes very fast into a natural usage where You don't need to think too long. You can execute faster and build amazing funnels, because the functions are so easy and come with a great …
Chose ActiveCampaign
We selected Active Campaign several years ago due to its competitive cost and ability to integrate well with other software that we were using. With recent pricing changes, however, we will likely be shopping for alternatives.
Chose ActiveCampaign
I don't like MailerLite and Flodesk because they only offer segments, no tags. I like to add many tags to my contacts depending on the products they purchase, and this gets too cluttered when there's only segments. They also don't have clear insights on the home page of people …
Chose ActiveCampaign
ActiveCampaign allows more integrations, automated emails, and a better user experience. I have also tested FloDesk (which was not listed on the product drop-down) and though the original templates were better by design, it did not allow me to customize as much or create as …
Chose ActiveCampaign
this is by far my favourite in terms of automations and managebility
Chose ActiveCampaign
ActiveCampaign is good for a small sized company like us with the right pricing unlike some of the others where you need to buy an Annual plan. It also has all the basic features which we needed. It is great for a Marketing team but might not be up to the mark for Sales team …
iContact
Chose iContact
I have personally used MailChimp and Constant Contact. Plus, a back-end WordPress plug-in that I've since forgotten the name of as well as Active.com's email platform.
Chose iContact
iContact was the solution in use when I entered the organization. I have heard very good things about MailChimp and Constant Contact, the other two big names in this field. We have chosen to remain with iContact since then, but would be open to moving. However, it is fulfilling …
Chose iContact
We selected iContact because it was available at the time, and in our price range. I inherited it at the school. If it had been the program it is now back then, I would not have chosen it. At the moment, we are too busy to fully vet another program, so we are stuck with this …
Chose iContact
I haven't used other products for the same features that iContact offers, but I have used products like Mailchimp which sends out massive emails or postcards and such. Personally, I prefer iContact because you're able to personalize it and have the ability to send the emails …
Chose iContact
iContact and Constant Contact are very similar products, however I prefer the iContact interface. Mailchimp may have more features but is harder to train users who are not familiar with email campaigns.
Chose iContact
In my opinion, Mailchimp is the top contender to iContact and really gives them a run for their money. Mailchimp offers users more features, and costs less. Of course, they both have their advantages and disadvantages. Overall, it is a tough decision to make between the two, …
Chose iContact
IContact offered more flexibility, the ability to designate more users in different departments, and better-looking templates. The ability to ask for support and customized templates is also a key, and their account manager is available to respond to issues, offer advice, etc. …
Chose iContact
It offered the best cost to feature ratio and was easy to use. The other systems were great as well, but the potential integration with our CRM (Salesforce), was one of the key deciding factors. Also, icontact was included with the Vocus marketing suite which offered other …

Chose Intuit Mailchimp
We use ActiveCampaign and AWeber as well. I'd say all three are great software. Because we are a marketing agency we have clients who may already be using certain software and in those cases, we work with what they have set up already. Otherwise, we'd look at it on a …
Chose Intuit Mailchimp
Mailchimp is easier to use but ActiveCampaign has CRM features and automation features that far outstrip Mailchimp, but it's another level of difficulty to learn compared to how easy Mailchimp is. Mailchimp holds it on against it though because of how easy it is to set up and …
Chose Intuit Mailchimp
I would still recommend Mailchimp to most people starting out. It's easy to use and set up and doesn't require a lot of extra support to get started. Other than ActiveCampaign or Keap, which are for larger lists and more complicated, Mailchimp is a good choice. If you …

I would say that Mailchimp is good for beginner businesses trying to get started with their email marketing campaigns and customer list. But I would say it's temporary until they find a better solution that will fit their needs. I would do research into more robust and reliable …

Chose Intuit Mailchimp
I would say that Mailchimp is better than MailerLite in terms of its abilities. It has the capacity to do more than simple newsletters but does hit a cap fairly quickly. It is a much more affordable price point than ActiveCampaign and Hubspot. It also has wide adoption so lots …
Chose Intuit Mailchimp
I used Intuit Mailchimp, and I would say other software I used is equally good and competes with Intuit Mailchimp. Well, Intuit Mailchimp's reporting is better, and ActiveCampaign has more affordable pricing, so in the end, it all comes to what you need. What we needed was …
Chose Intuit Mailchimp
Intuit Mailchimp is more affordable, scalable for all team sizes, has a shorter SMS registration approval timeframe, integrates with more platforms, and doesn't require training to get started.
Chose Intuit Mailchimp
I think it’s so much nicer than Active Campaign on every level.
Chose Intuit Mailchimp
I have used a lot of email marketing tools over the years and Intuit Mailchimp is one that I keep going back to, it simple and easy to use, no messing around and it does what it says one tin.
Chose Intuit Mailchimp
The other products I have used are cumbersome and overly complicated. I can do what I need to do in Mailchimp and train someone else very easily. Even with the ease of use, I am not limited in functionality.
Chose Intuit Mailchimp
Mailchimp was usually already in place and needed to be set up for growth. In general, I found that the lack of phone support at the lower tiers and the rigidness for opt-in rules made working with it long term not that easy.
Chose Intuit Mailchimp
Mailchimp does emails very well and is a great solution for clients just starting out. If we want to manage multiple clients who are in that category it makes sense to use mailchimp for us. We have gone with other platforms like MailerLite to save some money for the client or Ge…
Chose Intuit Mailchimp
Mailchimp has more features than others and is more flexible than any other platform. It allows us to input any template we want and send out emails within minutes. It's an all-in-one email marketing tool.
Chose Intuit Mailchimp
Campaign Monitor is pretty similar, but has a more streamlined navigation in my opinion.

Drip is a better route if you plan to set up robust workflows and track detailed conversion points.

ActiveCampaign
I've been using ActiveCampaign since around 2018-2019 and I've always been satisfied with the software. It's simple to use, connects with the other tools I use and makes it easy for me to duplicate automations, email templates and workflows as I need to. On top of that, any time I've had an issue (which I think is around twice in the past 5/6 years), the customer service has always been super helpful and my issue has been resolved quickly.

I would only recommend it if someone was a small business. I think they are the best suited for companies who will send out a coupon or offer here and there. The most recent updates made it more complicated to use for more complicated processes. It is easy to train someone on the program, and so quick to learn. But I would also only stick to the simpler things. I also think the colorful templates are great, and show great creativity. But again, it is hard to justify recommending the program when it isn't WYSIWYG.

For any E-commerce related needs, like you need to see a list of customers who have added products to cart but did not purchase, this can be done really easily, but if your e-commerce provider provides integration, then it is best suited. Most of the systems in the Market provide out-of-the-box integration. Their API is also very easy it can be integrated to any language. You can integrate it into your custom developed system and use the features, like adding customers to specific lists. Also, if your lists become really big, then their system can get a bit slow to respond via API, so you might need a strategy for how you are gonna fetch the data using API.

Pros
ActiveCampaign
  • Collects and filters emails from various lead magnets exceptionally well (especially if a user wants to re-sign up to the same lead magnet and go through it again, they can)
  • Super easy to use email creation that is aesthetically pleasing and user friendly
  • Easy email sequences and user classification from a large range of opt in trigger options

  • Contact management. iContact is really great for entering all your contact. You are able to put them onto different lists, and let them choose which lists they would like to be a part of as well. There are many data fields provided to fill in information.
  • Emailing. We use the email feature at least once a month. They are always improving and adding new features, which is very helpful in presenting content in a new and exciting way to our readers. There are many options with remade templates and themes, or you can add your own.
  • Insights. It is really helpful being able to have the data to see what is working and what isn't. It is nice to be able to go back and see how things went in the past compared to now. Opens, clicks, shares, etc.

  • Mailchimp allows you to manage your mailing list really well. You can subscribe people, unsubscribe people manage the mailing list directly into segments, and what not.
  • Mailchimp has features where you can create campaigns based on your mailing lists and send out newsletters to your subscribers based on a multitude of parameters that you can setup. Such as send email daily, weekly, monthly and they also have event based mails that you can send out.
  • Mailchimp also has a feature where you can design your emails. The look and aesthetics are very important when sending emails to your subscribers and all those needs are addressed here.

Cons
ActiveCampaign
  • It took me a while to get to understand where to find things, and I used a free online course from a consultant who specialises in AC to help me get the foundations set up more easily. That said, there were lots of onboarding workshops, which were good. It just felt like it required a lot of different angles of learning to just get started.
  • The customer support took longer than other software to get back to me via email, though once I found the chat option for my most recent query, that was fast.
  • I've ended up switching to another programme where more software is more naturally integrated, and the AC equivalent is included in the price, along with many other types of software. However, design-wise, ActiveCampaign is much better.
  • I also had a problem with a form used on my WordPress website, which has a BuddyBoss platform - the colours on the form would be overridden by colour choices for the website, so they were hard to read (pink text on purple background instead of the gold text it was meant to be)
  • I couldn't always find the templates I was looking for or how to access them for automation-based emails. I think when I used it, there was a new type of template for newsletters that weren't available for automations, so I had to recreate it, which added time.

  • We also would like to send transactional messages which don't require an opt-out, this is a challenge with iContact. (May be a feature with pro?)
  • The regular version of iContact doesn't support event management or logic flows for automated messaging.
  • Custom form fields have limited field type options (can't build a drop-down).

  • The pricing tiers do scale quickly so if you have a free newsletter it may get expensive
  • The pricing is based on total emails so if you have users who you only email rarely it might not make sense to use Intuit Mailchimp
  • Customer support can be a bit lacking at times and their docs aren't always the best

I am committed at the moment. Rebuilding the automations I have would be a huge time drain. Plus the cost of learning a new system and the risk to deliverability of porting a 6,000 person list to a new platform. Also, AC offers everything I need ast a reasonable (but a little high) price. So, why not a 10? Because, early 2023, AC dropped a massive 2x price hike on long-term customers. They knew few would shift, so this feels like a cynical cash grab and left a bad taste, If they do something like this again, this camel will have a broken back.

We've had Mailchimp for about ten years, I want to say. I started with the company about four years ago, and I don't see us ever diverting to another source. I rate iContact as an easy to use program due to its user friendly dashboard and user interface. Most companies of small to medium size do not have a dedicated marketer, therefore it is someone multitasking who may or may not have this kind of experience. iContact makes it relatively simple and can actually expand one's knowledge in the area of business promotion.

The interface is a bit complicated, and I need to spend some time to learn new functions and understanding how it works. I haven't noticed any slow speeds from Mailchimp or their tools. I think the landing pages load quickly and look nice. The email reports and editing operates smoothly and doesn't take time to load. Additionally, when I use Mailchimp in conjunction with Zapier + Hubspot I don't notice any drag between any of these tools

Support Rating

This might be the best part. The chat support lady offered to make a video to help me solve my problem. I worked in customer service for years and I've never done that, lol. So, if they're offering things like that, I can only imagine that they'd be able to handle most any issue you throw at them.

They have always been responsive to any issues or concerns that have arisen with our account. Our customer account manager participates in our monthly county-wide communicators meetings via telephone to ensure that we are getting the most from the service. He also analyzes our lists to help us weed out inactive contacts.

It's pretty easy to get up and running! There's a slight learning curve on a few things, but once you find where everything is located, you can import your list and send your first email. It really makes our clients feel great to see how quickly they can get that first email out.

Alternatives Considered
ActiveCampaign
I moved to ActiveCampaign from Mailchimp. Admittedly, I was using the free version of Mailchimp, but I had numerous episodes of subscriber data NOT being added to Mailchimp, despite using API to integrate with my mailing list. Obviously, I couldn't pay for clicks and not capture subscriber data, so I had to find something else. ActiveCampaign has been 100% reliable in testing.

I didn't have a say in the decision because I wasn't with the company at the time. I listed HubSpot here because I know we used it in conjunction with iContact for email automation, but HubSpot Email was only recently built-out to the point where it is today. Now, iContact and HubSpot are no longer integrated.

I don't think they are comparable; we use Google Ads to put our website at the top of the list when someone googles certain words. We use meta business to manage our social media. Google aims to gain customers, while Mailchimp is used to interact with both existing and new customers.

Scalability
ActiveCampaign
My web designer told me about Active Campaign and although I don't recall which platform I had before, I LOVE Active Campaign and its user friendliness. The transition was seamless and I've never had a problem with functionality or server failure.
Active Campaign provides so many features, and makes it easy for non-techies to maneuver around the site with ease. They capture information and put it in an easy-to-read format.
At this point, I don't think I'd ever use any other platform!

iContact stays the same with the number of users added or taken away. It certainly remains reliable despite increased usage, and so, can be considered scaleable in that aspect.

Mailchimp over the years I've used it has grown in leaps and bounds. They have added so many additional features than were previously available. They are truly an all-in-one marketing platform now. If you're a small operation and just want to add email to your marketing efforts, they're there for you. If you're a larger operation and want to start sending postcard advertisements, they can do that. If you'd good with that and want to kick up your marketing by going social, you can do that on their platform. They are truly able to be as small as you need, but also get quite large in whatever it is you'd like to do through their system.

Return on Investment
ActiveCampaign
  • I haven't monetized my list yet so no clear ROI but great from a list-building perspective
  • The software is not cheap so at times I feel like I may not be getting the most out of the product because I'm not using all of the features

  • We have a template for webinars that we send every month. We just edit it and send. This couldn't be easier (once you know where to find it).
  • We like the breakdown of statistics in the dashboard. They're easy to read.
  • iContact isn't a comprehensive solution, so it is only one of a few products we use for marketing.

  • One of my retail web store clients was sending out email specials and notices about once a month. After clicking the send button, we would watch Google Analytics and the current site users would light up immediately. Often, the current site visitors would pop up to 20, 30 or more after the email was sent. On a normal day, seeing 1 or 2 online users would be OK.
  • Pretty much in all cases, we could see an uptick in positive activity after sending out a Intuit Mailchimp email to a list.
