Adobe Experience Manager

If the employees in charge of creating pages are not developers, this is a great platform since everything is easy and drag and drop style. For a developer, this might be more frustrating since small code tweaks are not as accessible.

MS SharePoint

MS SharePoint is well suited for organizations that have staff who work remotely as well as those with physical offices. It allows them the capability to access all the necessary programs in one place. The only setback is that not all programs mirror the original program which may cause some frustration.

Pros

  • AEM is great for customization. Web Dev builds the parts and authors use what they need.
  • Branding can be ensured with the ability to require brand colors, fonts, and styles.
  • It's easy to see who has built, modified, and published pages. It makes tracking changes very convenient.

  • Ability to share, read, and edit project documentation from anywhere on most devices. I can check out a document, catch a flight, spend 2-3 hours working offline, land and upload a new version. I don't have to worry about using a company versus a personal device.
  • Ability to track action items and issues, which is the second most important part of my job beyond requirements documentation. I can add action items for team members to complete and track their progress.
  • Ability to separate project management from business analysis as needed. As a business analyst, I don't have much use for my project manager's documents, so he can store those in another folder and I don't have to scroll through his documentation to find the docs I'm looking for.

Cons

  • The move to the new interface for authoring is drastically different from the previous interface. Moving has been difficult.
  • Since it is so customizable, a talented web dev team is needed to make all the parts.
  • It is not easy to tell if the page is live or draft in the new interface.
  • Integration with non-Adobe marketing automation tools is very difficult.

  • Tons of features can sometimes make things overwhelming.
  • With other services that are coming out, you start to see some of the flaws of SharePoint such as how sometimes the simplest thing can take quite some time to configure.
  • As good as the integration is with Office, it could be better.

We had and still have a fantastic experience using Adobe CQ. Lots of flexibility, great integration with other Adobe products we already use and a powerful technology make it a great fit for our corporate environment. Also as the community grows, it makes it easier to network with other developers and users to get new ideas on how to continue to get the best out of the software.

I am not the decision-maker for my organization regarding enterprise technology, so I can't really answer this question very accurately, other than to say that I am happy to continue using SharePoint as long as my organization keeps it.

Usability

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

SharePoint is easy to use for basic tasks. If you're trying to do something a bit more complicated, though, it can be difficult to figure it out on your own without going through a lot of trial and error. Most people will likely only be performing basic tasks, though, so I would rate the usability pretty high.

Support varies by tech and by vendor. I've used Microsoft's support channel and for the most part have been successful to get my questions answered. I've also used third party vendors and have gotten some answers resolved as well, though sometimes getting them on the phone is difficult. It all depends!

Implementation

Adobe Experience Manager8.7
Based on 2 answers
Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Alternatives Considered

We have used both Hybris and AEM, Hybris for e-commerce site and AEM for front facing site. Generally we prefer AEM due to the ease of use and user friendliness, as well as improved interface

MS Sharepoint was integrated in our marketing department before I arrived. Although we've run into some issues with some of its features, such as forms, its poor native Search application, and some other logistical headaches, we've been pretty happy overall with the way we've been able to use the tool to manage several dozen sites at once, with only a team of five marketers

It is extremely simple to share, within our department and even with other departments, things we have been working on. Formatting is not an issue when we are sharing and that is a big life saver.

It’s extremely simple to merge forms from different platforms to different types of sources! There is no lag so that is a huge help when you are in a hurry and have no time to spare.

Return on Investment

  • Difficult to calculate ROI, which would likely only be measured by time savings and improved SEO.
  • Takes time, which lowers productivity, to get up and running smoothly when first adopted.
  • Ensures we're using best practices, including maximizing SEO and more, through check lists and evaluations/ratings.

  • Being a single point repository for all of the company, it provides better efficiency for document management.
  • SharePoint has allowed us to consolidate several solutions, which has a positive effect on our overhead.
  • Business processes have improved by implementing workflows. This has saved time and offered more efficiency for several key processes within the organization.
  • Search functionality is fairly effective which also reduces overhead by allowing our internal stakeholders more expedient access to the resources they are looking for.
