Adobe Presenter

I love using Presenter to turn old, boring, and stagnant material into interactive course material. The software is useful for educators looking to author online courses or to author courses with an online portion. If you need a software that will enable you to take content you already have and then to make it more dynamic, offer students options of which way to go with their learning, then this is the software for you. The tools are similar to the office suite, so there isn't a steep learning curve.

HealthStream

It is very well suited for organizations that have limited resources in terms of education staff. HealthStream can be run by one person if needed. I am doing it for about 20,000 users. Ideally it would work best if you could also build your own courses and have the resources to do that.Key Questions:What training do you provide for administrators? What support do you provide for administrators? What support do you provide for students? How often is the website down? What operating systems are you compatible with? How often do you update your courses?

Pros

  • The drag and drop method of Adobe Presenter makes the software really easy to learn and use. It allows me to create presentations that are much more powerful and creative.
  • I LOVE the YouTube help videos. I feel like there is a help video on every topic I have ever wanted to know more about. I have almost grown to be an expert based on the help videos posted. They are easy to access and user-friendly.
  • I use the scenario templates. Because I teach programming courses, students can go different ways based on the knowledge that they already have of the content in the courses. The built in scenario templats allow me to create dynamic courses that are different for every learner that uses the course I am teaching them.

  • It works well to assign out courses for regulatory purposes.
  • We also purchases the competency center, which costs extra, to track on-line demonstration of a course. Staff like this and we don't have paper being shuffled between departments any longer.
  • For the most part staff can use HealthStream easily w/o much instruction.

Cons

  • I don't know if this qualifies as a "con," per se, but it's important not to try and use this as a full-fledged e-learning authoring tool, as the opportunities it affords for effective practice and feedback is minimal. It's a well-named product, since "Presenter" really is best used for "presentations," rather than bona fide training.
  • There's no real "programming" ability (like being able to use custom actions and variables).
  • I also wish that, when syncing animations to audio narration, if you make a mistake mid-way through a slide, you could re-do just from where you made the mistake on forward, rather than having to resync the whole slide.
  • Better audio editing capabilities within the product would make it feel less "necessary" to me to use an external audio editing product.
  • It's also not the cheapest of the tools that does this kind of thing. For example, SNAP, by Trivantis, does many of the same things at about a tenth the cost.

  • I recall the timeout on the modules were a problem. If your computer cut off or you accidentally logged out in the middle of a module, you would have to start a module over.
  • I also recall our database administrator having trouble with uploading videos here and there (very rare).
  • Access from home was also a problem (keep in mind this was a few years ago). Many of our employees could not access using their home computer.

My company is pretty invested in the Adobe ecosystem and is unlikely to change that in the foreseeable future. Also, Adobe Presenter is a very valuable tool and, with the new subscription model and the pricing we have, a relatively modest expense now. It's also fairly easy to learn and use, so it is starting to spread beyond the sphere of the various Learning & Development departments.

HealthStream met our needs and they were very responsive on the customer service side when we had issues trying to upload course assets. It was mostly stable, at times when running reports it may crash - but uptime was very acceptable and within industry norms. Pretty easy to get the navigation of the tool down.

Usability

Adobe Presenter7.3
Based on 1 answer
For all of the reasons I mentioned earlier. Overall, it's quite easy to create basic presentations with and to publish output with, either to an Adobe server, an LMS, or, I think, as stand-alone module. But there are some areas for improvement and better in-product help and explanations would be helpful, as well.

Support

Adobe Presenter3.6
Based on 1 answer
I think I pretty much answered this earlier....premium support is extremely expensive and online support can be difficult to navigate. Although, to be fair, when it comes to Presenter (compared to, say, Captivate), there isn't too frequent a need for support, since Presenter is a rather simple tool to use

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Presenter was the first product we started using. We were lacking something in our system and someone recommended Adobe Presenter to us. After carefully reviewing aspects of Adobe Presenter, we figured it will be best for our needs. Although the transition period was a little tough for us, in a couple of weeks time we were very comfortable with it.

I have also used products from SWANK healthcare and Oracle. While cost was a consideration in choosing both of these solutions - neither was as robust as HealthStream in reporting or the ability to assign courses or training to employees. Also, the UI with HealthStream is much easier to navigate and more intuitive.

Return on Investment

  • We don't really measure the ROI of this tool directly or in any kind of "hard numbers" way.
  • However, I will say that its ease and speed of use (compared to some of our more full-featured e-learning authoring tools) does allow us to create more deliverables more quickly, which has a (non-quantified) positive ROI in terms of L&D staffing and throughput.
  • Also, the fact that it's PowerPoint-based means that we can have subject-matter experts create the initial draft of the underlying content, saving L&D "specialist" time for just doing stuff that may require greater expertise, like tweaking the content for better instructional design, creating the quiz questions (if any), recording the narration, and doing the other more "technical" Adobe-Presenter-specific things.
  • It also saves the company money in that we don't have to provide the subject-matter expert with Adobe Presenter licences for them to be able to substantially contribute to the creation of the module.

  • Increased employee efficiency - compliance to regulations
  • Better reporting for employees - transcript of completed courses
  • Great deployment option for a large employee base - 5,000 employees plus
