AdStage

AdStage is great for bringing together all of your channels into one place for analytics. They now have easy API access into multiple channels which allows you to really deep dive and get the most out of the data that you often can't without that API access. They also have great ways to surface this data that is easy to digest for leadership.If you already have this internally or want to build it out internally, AdStage may not be a fit outside of some great automation tools, but it's not easy to have this data done and built out internally so this is a great place to start.

Of the DSPs in which I am familiar, TubeMogul's platform is the easiest to obtain premium publisher inventory... something they definitely push on their clients; but it is something they should be bragging about. It consolidates your deals into one easy interface from which you can either conduct an "on demand deal" or do a direct reservation. Their on demand deal is super easy since TubeMogul buys the publishers' inventory beforehand for its clients to then use. All you have to do to get access to this inventory is click a button. So simple

Pros

  • Easily pulling together API access for multiple channels into one area for in-depth reporting
  • Automation. They helped a bunch with features that LinkedIn didn't have.
  • The team. They were always super responsive and on the ball with any questions or concerns we had. The customer service was great.
  • General reporting and tieing data together.

  • User interface - It's extremely easy to build out campaigns with all your typical DSP targeting capabilities (locations, site lists, dayparting, device targeting, topic targeting, brand safety, inventory source. You can easily set up a campaign, daily and all time budget caps.
  • Turn around time - While many other self-service DSPs take up to ~24 hours to have an ad actually begin serving, my experience has been usually around 2 hours or less from when a placement is built out until it begins running.
  • Private Marketplace Deals and extremely easy access to premium inventory - TubeMogul has a site list divided into several tiers based on national recognition, quality, brand safely that you can easily have your campaigns target. They also have "On Demand" premium inventory that you can easily opt in to (without having to actually go to the publisher). The process is as simple as clicking a button to request access. Additionally, direct reservation deals can be set up through this tool.
  • Optimization Goals within your campaigns - You can set up a list of prioritized goals for your campaigns. They include things like ensuring delivery, optimize for a specific eCPM or vCPM, setting a viewability threshold, optimize to a specific CPC/CPM, CTR.

Cons

  • We were with them in the earlier days and when they were growing larger. We experienced some of that pain with pricing changes that didn't feel quite right. But, they've fixed this now.
  • We didn't really see the usefulness at times of optimizing some of the channels through AdStage, but we loved the reporting features they had for the channels.
  • Better tiers for payment and what fits into those. Again, these are being addressed much better now.

  • Not as much inventory so it is harder to scale with Tubemogul than other DSPs.
  • The separate placement types are too rigid. Interactive and Standard Preroll should be one product.
  • Viewability optimization isn't as strong as Doubleclick.

AdStage has been great and the only reason we wouldn't renew is if we decided to build this all out internally for API access. But, customer services is great, the product is great and I'd definitely recommend it.

I am not aware of the reasons to cancel a certain platform, but if we were i'd assume it's because of the missing features, lack of quality inventory and brand safety measures. I assume the contact would be renewed if above-mentioned reasons changed

AdStage had great support. They got back to me quickly every time, they always had or found an answer for what I was looking for, they took my feedback well, and they were knowledgeable with the platform and any issues I had. I have worked with a lot of other companies that are slow and AdStage definitely isn't one of them.

Alternatives Considered

I'm actually not aware of a ton of direct competitors for what AdStage is doing right now. As mentioned before, they have some great integrations for deep analytics, they bring all of the different vendors together in one central place and they have some awesome automation tools that I have not seen around.

Tube doesnt have many options for CPA driven campaigns; it doesn't have a well-vetted inventory; it doesn't have as many targeting capabilities: i.e. demo, language, channels etc.

Return on Investment

  • It's saved time for me to easily build out campaigns in Facebook and LinkedIn quickly and in scale
  • It gives people the option to get direct API access to multiple channels without having to build it all in-house
  • It allowed some great optimizations for LinkedIn which allowed us to use our spend there better

  • Positive - great customer service and education on new features, products
  • Negative - limited inventory pool to choose quality traffic from, which made it difficult to spend planned budget
