Amazon Cloud Drive

Amazon Cloud Drive is a fantastic backup solution for storing your digital files on the web, but if you want to manage, tweak, organize or otherwise maintain those files after they have reached the cloud, the experience immediately begins to suffer. This is especially noted when major competitor products like Microsoft and Dropbox offer similar services at similar prices, but offer far better interfaces for file management.

Box

Box is a very good general use cloud drive that has made some major strides in compliance across many various industry branches. Multinational companies could benefit greatly from using Box as their cloud solution because of their commitment to compliance and all of the new regulations. Box is also suited for integrations into many platforms - including Office 365, Google Apps and even Salesforce. I would still have to say that Office 365 users would benefit more from using the baked in OneDrive - which has really good compliance features too...

Pros

  • Organized platform, can use personally & for work.
  • Cloud, so you can access it anywhere- you just need to have an Amazon account.
  • Affordable upgrade of $11.99/month once you reach the 5GB limit.

  • Very easy to use with an intuitive website and desktop sync client
  • Mobile apps afford the ability to access the account and files form virtually anywhere
  • Paid versions have unlimited file sizes and types
  • Nice integrations with 3rd party apps

Cons

  • They recently did some kind of update that changed it from Amazon Cloud Drive to Amazon Photos, which made things a bit confusing. Still unsure sometimes where to go or what app to open.
  • I wouldn't mind more robust functionality in terms of pausing uploads or seeing which individual files are uploaded and potentially duplicates of files that have already been uploaded.

  • Offline sync client needs updating to allow for more selective folder and file syncing
  • Windows sync client updates quite often - not a bad thing, but also not automatic
  • At the free level, I'd like to see the online only option... Right now, there's no way to tell that files actually synced!

The system is very easy to use and it's use of apps for almost all devices and hardware makes it even easier to manage and store photos and documents. I highly recommend this as an easy to use solution for novices!

The program is generally easy-to-use, but there are some issues with the file structure metaphor. It can be confusing for people accustomed to working with tree file structures. For example, if I share a folder with someone which is several levels down in my folder hierarchy, the shared folder displays at the root level for the person with which I shared. This is confusing and is not adequately covered in the training or documentation.”

Cloud up-time is great. The failure of the Sync app should be looked at separately and does have failures..

We sometimes experience delays; of course, those are probably "Internet" problems rather than Box. One thing Box could do to be more helpful is to provide data on the status and speed of file synchronization.

I am a bit conflicted about the score because we haven't needed much technical support, though the support we have gotten was quite good. Frankly, the product has been easy to use and reliable which is the best support.

The tutorials on their website are great, I think anybody can pick this up if they actually just watch the tutorials. The hard part is getting people to watch them!

It was uneventful. One lesson learned was to ensure that the right standards were in place to separate data for various projects and customers before people created a mess by putting data wherever made most sense to them.

Alternatives Considered

Actually I think both Box and Dropbox are easier to use and have better features for sharing files, especially if you need password security on those files, but Amazon is better for storing tons of data. Box and Dropbox are much more expensive to store a lot of files.

In my experience, Box's collaboration features and sharing capabilities exceed other cloud storage platforms. The ease of use with having one platform to do all of the above instead of three different tools makes a big difference in the amount of sharing and collaboration we do in our organization. Other platforms just don't cut it when it comes to ease of use for all three things.

It's great, as we put more files on there it's done very well.

Return on Investment

  • We have no ROI numbers that have been reported, we have expected 100% uptime which so far we are satisfied with, so nothing about ACD has hampered our ability to function.

  • Box was a decent sized expense for us, and we had to make sure we budgeted for it each year and took into account the growth of users we would have each year.
  • The ability to quickly access files remotely has proven invaluable to us, where we often need to pull up files for customers while out in the field.
  • Being able to collaborate with others while using Box meant that we didn't need to all be in the same place at the same time to work on something together, and saved travel and time for us.
