Armor

If you need a low cost, high availability, secure and reliable infrastructure, Armor Complete is the way to go. For smaller companies, knowing that you have a dedicated team monitoring and standing by to address any hosting issues is a god send. Round the clock support means that even the smallest of units can be assured that someone will be eyes on. This literally lets us sleep at night.

Rackspace Managed Hosting

Rackspace is very well suited as a IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) provider, particularly when you're planning on leaving the infrastructure up for a period of time. They seem to focus a bit more on that aspect of infrastructure. That is to say, they seem to promote running servers for longer periods of time and not spinning up/shutting down servers frequently based on usage spikes. While, they do support that sort of availability -- they don't have features built into their offering, necessarily, that make it a lot easier to implement. Our experiences with Rackspace have been 100% around their cloud platform, but they have another entire part of their business that is centered around hosting/maintaining/supporting physical hardware (bare metal). They have had a great reputation over the last several years (10+) for being top-notch providers in this space, which is one reason we even considered them for our Cloud-based hosting needs. We don't have any direct experience with their "bare metal" offerings, but their reputation is certainly great, and worth noting.

Pros

  • Constant innovation is one key strength. We have been a client for less than a year and the product features that we receive has widened significantly since we started using Armor.
  • With Armor, actual humans are involved in keeping our systems secure. Other products/services on the market merely install a product and you are left to maintain the product yourself.
  • Communication is a definite strength. We continually receive alerts from the Armor staff on threats and are always informed of product changes.
  • Turn around time is amazing. When we submit a ticket, we always hear back right away. It might not be with a final resolution, but they overcommunicate during the process. Which is a good thing when it comes to security.

Cons

  • Honestly, most of the issues that I have had with the Armor Anywhere product when we first started using it have been addressed with the many improvements that have been made to the product since we started. They really pay attention to the user interface for the tools.

  • Work to best practices, at times clunky
  • Not the cheapest...
  • Very technical, at times advisers find it difficult to "dumb down" their questions regarding services you're requesting

Heroku - In order to transfer files to Heroku, you need to know how to use GIT. The flexibility to define how you transfer files to a Rackspace server has its advantages. However, the autoscale ability of Heroku sets it above Rackspace.AWS Elastic Beanstalk - Unfortunately the Beanstalk rates higher in both file transfer and scalability.

  • Lead conversion: we are able to meet client needs immediately both from those presented to us without warning, as well as those we actually seek out
  • Efficiency: regardless of our internal technical prowess, Rackspace allows us to solve technological problems for our clients, instead of fumbling around attempting to manage our own.
  • Repeat Business: our clients return to us for continuing technology solutions challenging all businesses every day; the confidence in returning client business finds its foundation in the positioning Rackspace affords us in what we can, and cannot, offer.
