Articulate 360

Articulate 360 is a powerful tool if you plan on teaching any topic. It can be as simple or complex as you like. You can create a Rise course which has videos, interactive Storyline content, quizzes, interactive images, buttons, and more. It's not necessarily suited for compliance training because it is hard to verify completion.

Litmos

Litmos has been great for the perspective of being able to derive data on our technicians, the built-in reporting features work relatively well, but our ability to build reports and interact with the software from the outside has really been the key in learning more about our technician's ambition and knowledge base. Litmos has been very well suited for our company with the ability to easily set up user profiles and assign as few or as many courses and learning paths as needed. We are able to have pre-employment assessments to check where the user's knowledge level is in response to their perceived knowledge.

Pros

  • Articulate Review is the single greatest addition to the Articulate set of tools in the 4.5 years I've been using the product. It makes course review a cinch, and eliminates all of the headaches that come from reviewing courses on an LMS or via a hacked together Google Drive/Dropbox solution.
  • Rise is an incredibly quick, easy way to build quick, beautiful, content driven courses that are mobile friendly and responsive. It's drag and drop, which makes it fun to use, and web-based, which allows developers to build content on the go without needing access to their primary machine.
  • Peek (the screen recorder tool) is a big improvement over Articulate Replay from a simplicity perspective. It records the screen as a discreet taskbar icon, rather than a full program, and then allows you to edit and use that content in your software package of choice. I love it.

  • Flexible capabilities on all devices: Many Learning Management Systems only have browser-based software, which can be limiting or too open when referring to an LMS. Litmos has iOS and Android applications that allow us to keep the system within a controlled environment.
  • Easily to integrate API: Without an API, Litmos would be pretty limited for our companies scope of work. The API allows us to build our own report with the data that is important to us instead of simply relying on the LMS's build in features to meet our needs.
  • Unlimited Storage: Many programs limit users on the amount of storage they can use which can be a real hiccup when trying to utilize captivating video or high-resolution photos. Litmos offers unlimited storage so uploading large files isn't even a second thought.
  • Support: Through the multiple support tickets that have been issued to Litmos by our company, they are always quick to respond and relatively helpful. Their development team might take a while to implement a change, but atleast your voice is being heard.
  • Uservoice: Litmos utilizes a system that allows users and administrators to actively participate in deciding what features get added next. Users can submit ideas and others will be able to vote on them.

Cons

  • I occasionally have issues with the launcher in 360, and can't get the program to open. It seems to be an intermittent bug on my computer that has to do with being enterprise-locked. The first time this happened, I reached to Articulate's world-class support, who helped me get up and running again. I've been able to fix the issue subsequently by following the instructions provided by the Articulate folks, so I'm happy with that!
  • I would like to see further integration with TinCan API (xAPI) in the platform. Right now, I believe that TinCan is only supported in Storyline, and that the statements it is capable of sending to an LRS system are limited to 6 canned verbs. While that is fine, there is no native support for sending variables directly to an LRS without doing some XML tweaking behind the scenes. I'd like to see Articulate lead the industry in xAPI use cases and support, since I hope that's the direction that the industry is headed.
  • I say this every time I have an opportunity, but I'd love to see Articulate develop a native version for the Mac. I've had some success running Storyline 360 on my Mac with Parallels and VMWare Fusion, but I'd like to free up my system resources to edit video AND develop courses, which is difficult to do when you're running a virtual machine.

  • Build in Assessments lacking options: The build in assessment editor leaves much to be desired (although it is on the list of items to improve upon). The options for question types are basic and lackluster.
  • Development team solution time: Support tickets that deal with real issues affecting large groups of people are oftentimes addressed many months down the road. As with many large companies with software, it takes Litmos quite a while to get around fixing issues.

For what we need in the very near future, Litmos does not offer us the required capability. Ideally, we are looking for an integrated LMS, coaching, mobile support and content creation platform. Litmos may have the LMS part covered but there are other platforms that do this better along with providing an integrated all-in-one service or at the very least support API integration with other vendors to meet our requirements.

Alternatives Considered

Articulate 360 has the total package vs the other tools. If you just wanted to do video, you can use tools like Camtasia. Another elearning tool I have tried is called Viewlet Builder. It was a very stripped down version of a Storyline type software where you could create and produce elearning modules as well. Articulate 360 has pretty much all of the capabilities of the other kinds of elearning development tools, so you pretty much only need one suite instead of compiling a toolkit of mixed software

Each one of the other products reviewed had one or more required features missing. A big feature that most other LMS's didn't have was a native iOS or Android application; or if there was a mobile application, it was quite frankly difficult to use and unintuitive. The Litmos Applications worked relatively well, were simple to use and enabled us to complete all of our necessary requirements. Other features that the competition struggled with was training material compatibility; Litmos allowed for SCORM or Tin Can, videos, PowerPoint, PDFs, etc. where other programs didn't allow us to add many of these formats.

Return on Investment

  • We have been able to turn out content more quickly.
  • We have been able to share with subject matter experts while building courses.
  • We have been able to create more interactive learning and increase knowledge retention.

  • Our Technicians are better trained and in the case of a work mishap, we are able to justify and prove that we provided the correct training to the technician.
  • We are able to cost jobs according to the Technicians knowledge base and experience which allows us to more accurately give the customers what they're paying for.
  • Our overall customer satisfaction is on the climb since we have set a baseline standard for all technicians to complete. This also ensures that some techs don't "slip through the cracks" and become a weak link on our teams.
