Autodesk Bim 360

Bim360 is okay to use in the field. I feel there are far more superior products or software out there to use. Bim360 isn't the easiest to use and takes time to learn. Additionally, flipping through plans is like flipping through a book, it's a slow process unless you know specifically where/what is on each page needed.

eSUB Construction Software

As a subcontractor - yes (overheads are a big deal, this can help manage it by being simple and productive)As a general contractor - no (I think there are more things a GC would need at their disposal)If your whole company is on board it can be a powerful tool, but everyone -even site workers, need to be 100% on-board. It can't do what it's supposed to do if only some are using it.

Pros

Autodesk Bim 360

  • Allows office personnel to efficiently coordinate with other trades.
  • It allows field personnel to make decision on the fly if changes need to be made to the originally coordinated designs.

Cons

Autodesk Bim 360

  • CAD file collaboration is unstable.
  • Can not search the text of drawings or specs to find words. This is a huge deal breaker.
  • Cannot zoom in all the way on the drawing to see details blown up.

eSUB Construction Software

  • We use Microsoft daily for many things, its an essential program for many areas - the more eSUB can integrate with its core programs the more seamless the transition and daily use.
  • Its display platform could use a bit more of a face lift. It reminded me of late 2010's web-design or Microsoft visuals.
  • Its app functionality struggled in some areas, we tried using it but found there to be some bugs. Although IT was very helpful in response.

I have not had the opportunity to use the support for Bim360 - this is the reason for only giving it a "1 rating." The general contractor has always answered my related questions and/or concerns when using this program/software. I cannot give an honest opinion on the support function unless I use it. I would hope it would be very supportive such as Fieldwire, Procore, etc.

Alternatives Considered

Autodesk Bim 360

Bim360 is an immature, oversold, and under-delivered product that is simply the only option available for collaboration when you are locked into the Autodesk Revit ecosystem. SharePoint Online, Dropbox Business, and other cloud file management and sharing solutions show you the potential of clouds when they are implemented and deployed correctly, and directly contrasts with the present state of the BIM 360 platform.

eSUB Construction Software

Procore has a lot of layers and bells and whistles. eSUB is your meat and potatoes. I found eSUB more suited for our company vs Procore. However, Procore would be more suited to general contractors. eSUB didn't allow as much integration with Microsoft as Procore, but it wasn't significant enough for that to be a deciding factor. I think the difference comes down to what kind of company you are: if you have a lot to manage then maybe Procore if you just need organization, record keeping, budget structuring and get the job done then maybe eSUB.

Return on Investment

Autodesk Bim 360

  • We are able to avoid potential issues due to lack of communication between parties involved on the project.
  • Ease of model updating.
  • Ability to share with the client in an easy-to-grasp way.

eSUB Construction Software

  • eSUB saves time as you don't have to type, print and send documents.
  • I like to call it "set it up once, use it a million times" as once you set up a customer, vendor etc... you can use them across multiple platforms.
  • It saves money as you don't need a pool of resources to manage a project due to its ease of use.
