Considered Both Products
Cisco Duo
Chose Cisco Duo
Duo is easier than many token-based or code-based methodologies. It allows self-enrollment in ways that Google 2fa does not. Okta costs too much. LastPass is great for passwords, but we didn't want to keep our auth egg in that same basket. Many imitators have shown up since we …
Chose Cisco Duo
Cisco Duo had an integrated method for handling MFA on Endpoints and Servers. This was a huge bonus. Administration and implementation seemed more efficient as well.
Chose Cisco Duo
The duo was more manageable to implement and quite user-friendly. The support with Duo was phenomenal and they offer a trial period that can help determine if it is right for you. More than likely you will be pleased and decide to implement.
Chose Cisco Duo
Google Authenticator generates codes, which is okay for certain sites, but not quite as robust as Duo. Of course, it's cheaper, but it doesn't do as much and the setup is more complicated on the back end. The only realm in which it's really even competitive with Duo is for …
Chose Cisco Duo
We used Google 2F for a bit in some of our organization but found it lacking a lot of the benefits and security that we were wanting. We would rather pay a few bucks more a person a month and have peace of mind knowing we have a solid 2-Factor product connected to us.
LastPass for Business
Chose LastPass for Business
When evaluating other password managers LastPass was the easiest to use and could easily do everything required by the organization. I also found that many contractors already were familiar with LastPass making it easy to direct them on how to receive shared credentials. The …
Chose LastPass for Business
LastPass outperformed the other solutions we tried. There are strong players in this password management space, but LastPass provides a solid product with a price-point that is affordable for any size organization. Other solutions we tried had barriers to entry (i.e. user …

I highly recommend this tool to anyone considering to purchase or for anyone in need of a seamless tool for data security. It has smooth integration with other tools, Intuitive users friendly interface even for new users. It also has great security features that promote data security through access controls and multi-factor authentication so data acquires a second layer of security that is difficult to bypass. Go for it.

Honestly, I cannot think of a scenario where LastPass is less appropriate for business use. LastPass has done nothing but help me complete my day to day work in a much more efficient manner. Due to LastPass I no longer have to try and remember my user IDs and password and I save time by not having to type the data into the user ID and password fields. This is exceptionally helpful for me as I work in IT/Software Support and I am logging in and out of the same websites numerous times a day.

Pros
Cisco
  • We use Cisco Duo with different type of device and application, but we never face any difficulties to integrate Cisco Duo with any of them.
  • We integrated Cisco Duo with some of our active directory and some of the OS are quite old but Cisco Duo works totally fine with them.
  • The end user application is very easy to use. We never had any complain from non tech team members of having trouble of using Cisco Duo.
  • There are several authentication methods available rather than passcode. I personally like the push notification which is always on time and quite fast.

  • Ability to store multiple different logins for one site for assistants that work under multiple solicitors.
  • Ability to share passwords between staff when needed without them being sent by email or simply passed around on notes, making it much more secure.

Cons
Cisco
  • Our biggest issue is if someone forgets their cell phone, they need to either contact us to be put in bypass (which allows them access for a short time) or they can generate keys to be used if they lose their phone or have no wifi.
  • If a client is in an area where their is no access to Wi-Fi, often they need to go to a location to get Wi-Fi to complete the login procedure.

  • It does not work for all platforms. some secure platforms are still managing to avoid the usage of platforms like these.
  • Sometimes we add passwords and we have to do it a few times for them to show in the selected folder.
  • I have nothing else.

There are a lot of competing solutions on the market; however, Duo "just works", and there is little to no learning curve for the new members to be acclimated to it. As long as that continues I see it as the preferred option moving forward

LastPass has been a game changer for me. I keep more than 100 passwords for financial sites for my company and many of those sites will automatically log you out if you've been idle for 10 or 15 minutes. Typing and re-typing credentials is not only extremely inefficient, but it also adds the risk that you could type them incorrectly and have your account locked. LastPass fills in all my credentials automatically and helps me to generate secure passwords for new sites. I will always want this software on my machine because it makes my life so much easier.

Usability

I login to LastPass when I turn on my computer in the morning and I use it throughout the day. I cannot express how much easier, quicker, smoother (running out of adjectives) this is than our old Excel spreadsheet. I don't bookmark pages anymore, I put them in last pass as all I have to do is search for the site name, press launch and because I have auto signin for most of the sites, I'm in and doing my business in seconds. Truly a blessing!

Reliability and Availability
Cisco
In the last 5+ years we've been using Duo, there may have been 1 outage that impacted us. We do receive periodic notifications of issues but, for the most part, they impact carriers or functionality that we either don't use, or do not care about.

Support Rating
Cisco
I have not needed direct support for Cisco Secure Access by Duo as I have not had a problem with it, but I have full confidence that the support is outstanding. It is now a core component of the corporate technology stack - a problem would mean a serious degradation in the ability of the company to function.

Haven't had to directly contact support all that much (at least not me personally, I don't know that anyone else on the team has needed to) but the Help Desk options/resources and documentation available are enough to answer any questions, although for what it's worth, the contact support options are not hard to find, and aren't hidden like some sites have it. Additionally, free new user training is offered for those who want it.

Documentation could have been better. I had to piece together different KB/admin guides to make certain things work and I also had to use third-party guides to get bits of information that were missing from Cisco Duo documentation. Support was also engaged multiple times to figure out an issue and after some back and forth it was usually determined that the information I needed was hidden somewhere else and had no direct correlation with the document that was linked from the platform.

Educating users on password management and the basics of the solution is key to then have them successfully start using it themselves. Many have taken it further and now use it for personal passwords as well.

Alternatives Considered

I would fully expect a competitor like Okta or any other multifactor mechanic to function pretty similarly, and I hesitate to say duos the best. I think the idea is that it's a simple concept, but it does it well. So I haven't evaluated any myself outside of duo, but I'm also not in the market and I don't feel like we need to go shopping for something else.

I use LastPass for Business has a user as it has been chosen by my company. If I have to compare with other tools that I use for personal reasons like KeePassXC I consider LastPass well integrated, I don;t find the same good way with the other tool I just mentioned.

So far, the only limits we've encountered were tied to our imagination. Duo's strong list of supported integrations is amazing.

Access levels and the organization features in LastPass are so flexible that you can set up your structure to work for virtually any scenario. You can also prevent employees from being able to see the actual credentials, which is huge for security, especially in large companies.
