Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor

We utilize SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor as our main tool for the visibility into our customer and internal network and server infrastructure. It allows us the flexibility to assign roles to multiple departments to tailor the experience to each specialized role, as well as the ability to dig deep into issues, devices, and resources to quickly fix errors and resolve problems as quickly as possible, sometimes even before the end-users even realize that any issues have occurred.
  • SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor's dashboards can give you a real quick look at what's going on with your network at a very high level, and then you can drill down into individual nodes for more detail and granularity.
  • SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor's VMware, Cisco, and Windows integration allow you to be able to monitor servers, VM hosts and specialized Cisco equipment (WLCs, firewalls, etc.) with the most relevant information about each according to the type of device it is.
  • SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is able to service a high volume of endpoints, assuming you allocate the infrastructure behind it.
  • SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) can require a lot of tailored settings and setup before being ready for use within a mature organization/network.
  • If there's anything NPM can't do on its own (IPAM, DNS management, Network Configuration Management) there are add-ons that are available...for an additional cost. Seems like there's always an add-on...
  • NPM can have serious performance issues if you don't have the required server/network/database infrastructure behind it and sometimes that can leave you flying blind.
  • We've had a remarkable return on our investment with SolarWinds. With it, we've been able to minimize network downtime for customers and stay on top of lingering problems before they have become business-impacting.
  • We've been able to manage our network more effectively with less manpower than in other organizations thanks to NPM.
  • NPM has allowed us to utilize our NOC in the manner in which it was designed - to quickly notify customers of problems and coordinate with internal teams to resolve issues quickly.
It's a much more robust, defined system that really excels beyond what WhatsUp Gold offers. Between the packed-in features like NetPath, and the ability to monitor without agents for many different types of nodes/devices, there's a lot more value in the offering of NPM vs. other network monitoring solutions out there.
It's well-suited for small-to-medium sized organizations with a need to monitor network devices, VMs or servers with the need to get a quick look at their health and the ability to drill down into the nitty-gritty of each device if need be. Also, the alerting features are great for small teams or individuals. If you need multiple individuals to be alerted of issues/outages for devices and you don't have the appropriate distribution lists set up, or need to notify a large number of distribution groups when problems arise, it isn't well equipped to handle more than two.
