Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for Azure

I’ve been a user/manager of Veeam’s on-premise solution for 7 years or more, and in general have been extremely happy with it. The installation is incredibly easy and intuitive, you can just get on with it. Veeam Backup for Azure is less so. Firstly, we needed external support to get this in place. I am sure we could have worked this out ourselves, but time and resources at our end were constrained and buying in professional services days (it took 2 days) was the path of least resistance. Azure in general is more complex than on-premise so I guess that shouldn’t be entirely unexpected, but it is something to consider, as this isn’t simply a case of installing an application, but standing up a virtual infrastructure for it too. Secondly, this does not support multi-subscription/cross-subscription backups. To be fair to Veeam this is most likely down to how Azure works and limitations placed on you by external forces (i.e. Microsoft), however you’d have thought that by now a solution would have been created to allow this to happen (we’ve been running this for about 2 years now). So, we had a choice of either buying another separate set of licensing for the other subscription using Veeam Backup for Azure or another solution such as Microsoft Azure Backup instead for it. We came down on the side of cost, and in this instance ‘free’ won (again, Microsoft). Veeam Backup for Azure has many more bells and whistles on it than Microsoft Backup, and as such I would recommend it, but there are other players in the market now which can manage and maintain your backups for on-premise and cloud, so it is worth shopping around to see what best fits your situation.
  • Multi point snapshots throughout the day
  • Need for cross/multi subscription backups
  • Upgrades
  • Pricing
  • This allowed us to get cloud backups up and running without too much hassle as we are an existing user of their on-premise suite. It was a time saver.
  • You are not bound to use the cloud storage of either your CSP or Veeam which allowed us to shop around for cheaper storage outside of Azure, cutting cost.
  • It has made out licensing more complicated particularly as they have restructured this in recent years.
If you're already familiar with Veeam then you won't struggle with this.

Do you think Veeam Backup for Azure delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Veeam Backup for Azure's feature set?

No

Did Veeam Backup for Azure live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Backup for Azure go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Backup for Azure again?

Yes

If you're already a user of Veeam it's a no brainer really. It'll be familiar to you and your team to use which means you can get up and running reasonably fast with this, It's obviously useful having support and licencing all under one banner too, but the cloud solution does seriously lag behind in functionality compared to it's on-premise solution.
