OpenText Analytics

It depends on extensibility, set-up, access & style. Actuate performs fairly well, but has performance issues because it sits on top of eclipse, which sits on top of Java. Extensibility usually comes at that price. Set-up is fairly straightforward and it can be secured.

Claritysoft

Our client, and probably most, do not like change. We transitioned from a tool that had been used for nearly 7 years. From a support staff, we were concerned about how customers would react to learning new processes. However, Claritysoft's concise, ergonomic flow of use really did not present too many complaints by our clients. Any "complaints" we did receive were more from those who didn't want to change rather than from those who didn't understand. Reports, reports, reports! Our clients love data (and who doesn't!), and Claritysoft's robust reporting capabilities shine bright. It is a bit difficult to configure the reports, but that complexity is an added feature IMO.

Pros

  • The report outputs can vary across different types such as HTML, PDF, and Excel
  • Their open source offering is very sufficient
  • There are great boards and blogs for developers and engineers to expand and use their features.
  • The people from the company that I've worked with are professional and courteous.

  • Ease of Use - Claritysoft offers a very organic and intuitive design for customers to easily navigate and use.
  • Developer Standpoint - Standing up the application and importing data was straightforward and did not take long to configure security, permissions and roles.
  • Out Of The Box (OOTB) - Claritysoft out of the box offered many built-in tools utilized for our environment, however, manipulating and customizing was not over the top difficult, once we established a baseline.

Cons

  • Licensing is a bear.
Amy Broome profile photo
  • This may be an unfair "con", however the application is quite costly. With that said, it is worth it!
  • This may be a "con" because of our environment, however the email functionality is a bit limited when it comes to multiple items.
  • Customized reports are a bit messy to build, BUT the options for customization has answered all requests by our client.

There are some very complex performance reports, which can not be handled in other tools. If we want to create our own framework in any reporting tool then Actuate is the best choice

Breadth of Deployment

The design tool is useful for basic reporting, but many reports require some experience in SQL and JavaScript. Java programming, though not a required skill for basic reports, is needed for better reporting and to access the more advanced features (such as debugging).

Alternatives Considered

We looked at a few other competitor's products but based on value for features chose Actuate for its total cost of ownership.

In terms of portfolio management, Claritysoft has been hands down a better overall product. Most importantly, it has been the most customer friendly application. The tool was selected, not by me, however many other competitors were evaluated. The aspects needed most by our client, were achieved best by the offerings of Clarity, many out of the box, but anything not inherent, we have had not problems configuring and implementing.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.

  • Our previous application did not offer the data details that recently became oftenly asked for by our client. This would cause long waits to build out reporting function via a supportive application. With Claritysoft, we have been able to build internally, reports asked for by the client, as well as offer other reports our client had not thought of. It's ROI is continues to grow week to week it seems.
  • The interaction with the Outlook client in our environment has been less than impressive, but that may be indicative of the parameters and not the fault of the application.
  • Setting up accounts, laying permissions and roles, has been a night and day, positive change, compared to our predecessor.
