It is much better to prospect brands and find appropriate contacts at a parent account, and not such a strong suit for agencies.

Data.com

Data.com is useful if you are trying to segment an entire vertical or market. Company and account information is robust but specific contact information is lacking. They provide a granular level of data as it relates to industry standards (i.e. SIC, NAICS, etc.) but if the company you are trying to research is private or on a smaller scale, you may have difficulty finding the right information

Pros

  • Provides email addresses - essential when doing cold email outreach.
  • Provides agencies for each brand/company.
  • Provides media spend for parent company and brand.

  • Robust crowd sourced database that generally provides accurate information. This is a great help for general searches looking for specific titles.
  • Easy to add companies and contacts to earn points. The ability to earn points by adding either a .csv or individual contacts is a great feature for individuals who want to be able to find new contact info for free. I've never spent a cent on data and have been able to get thousands of contacts.
  • Using Data.com is very intuitive. They did a good job with site layout and even a new user should be able to easily navigate the site and features.

Cons

  • Updating who works on each brand from the brand side.
  • Updating who works on each brand from the agency side.
  • Not having to log in as often.
Bryan Silverman profile photo
  • Data.com is not always my first source for lead generation research because the information I receive is frequently unreliable
  • I don't like that I have to rely on other people to provide contact information. If data.com does due diligence for accuracy, they clearly don't do it well because the contact information is false most of the time.
  • Start up/smaller companies are usually not listed

Very intuitive to use and I've never had any confusion with features. Anyone can create an account and use the platform simply by adding a contact or company into the database to earn points. It's a great option if you don't have budget for lists or pay services. It is easy to use and anyone can benefit from it.

Whenever I've had a question their support has responded pretty quickly and gives me exactly what I am looking for. I have not had any technical issues so I can't speak to issues there, but as far as general questions from a free user they have impressed me with how quickly they get back to me and the thoroughness of their answers.

Alternatives Considered

Winmo allows more dynamic and functional searches, and puts agency and brand contacts in one place. It also allows exports based on spend and in general, is much more dynamic of a software.

Data.com was very comparable to the other softwares our oganization uses, and we use it as an everyday tool because of how easy it is to work within salesforce. Our organization utilizes multiple platforms and competitors of Data.com, each for their own different reasons. The ease of which Data.com behaves in Salesforce sold us, and the advanced search features and tagging abilities (which cut down advanced research time and increases employee efficiency) made the decision much easier to justify as well.

Return on Investment

  • Improved efficiency of prospecting.
  • Improved efficiency of finding emails and email syntax.

  • I believe it has helped in lead qualification and thus a net benefit on ROI.
