Adobe Experience Manager

Adobe Experience Manager is well suited for large organizations that need a powerful, comprehensive and robust CMS to manage multiple websites/translations of websites. It is also well suited for those who need a CMS that is well integrated with other systems such as analytics, targeting and email marketing, or those who want some fancy add ons like Adobe smart tags or AI-enhanced capabilities. It is also an expensive product with a steep learning curve, so it is less appropriate for smaller companies/individuals or those that don't need an overly robust system that is integrated with other digital marketing tools. If you're looking for a more affordable solution that is easy to pick up and play, go with a more basic WordPress or Joomla type option.

Google Analytics Premium

Well Suited: Not to sound like a broken record, but this is ideal (really ideal) for mid-size and larger firms/agencies/etc. whose revenue comes from managing/augmenting/creating many different websites that combine to command a large amount of traffic (meaning "well into the millions" in terms of monthly hits. If this is your industry, and you would describe your company as "big," then you are probably the kind of company GA 360 is made for.Less Appropriate: If you manage a single website (like I currently do), or if you're a small-ish agency/creative firm that manages websites with combined traffic under 10-million monthly (I believe that is the cut-off). The standard version of GA is still great, but there is no need to pay extra for 360 if you are on the smaller side.

Pros

Adobe Experience Manager

  • Adobe Experience Manager keeps your content separate from your layout which allows for a lot of flexibility in how you display your content.
  • Adobe Experience Manager integrates really well with other Adobe products like Adobe Analytics.
  • Adobe Experience Manager 's drag and drop interface makes it fairly easy to utilize with minimal familiarity.

Google Analytics Premium

  • Easy to use big data tool with impressive dashboards.
  • Easy to start with. Quick implementation on the website owner side.
  • Custom variables and custom metrics.
  • Very good user location profiles and analytics.
  • A session unification feature that allows identifying "clicks", or in other words visitor behavior, before the Google user ID was assigned. This would make the statistics a bit more precise (yes, we have solved a case benefiting from this feature).

Cons

Adobe Experience Manager

  • Upgrading and applying patches can be hit or miss - I recommend backups because of the potential to damage the existing infrastructure
  • Space management is an issue - every change or request takes up space that can be reclaimed, but only through a complicated procedure done through command prompts. There was no documentation for this on their site and we had to use a third party to create the procedure. It has to be run manually.
  • There isn't a good backup system, particularly one that can be scheduled to run reliably.

  • Ecommerce -- Unfortunately, at this time, I just wouldn't recommend Google Analytics Premium to a retail/ecommerce brand. The product is missing some key metrics and reports such as product views, add to cart, abandoned products, cross sold product basket analysis, etc. Clients in the retail sector struggle to use events to hack together these data points that are out-of-the-box with other analytics tools. Once Google overcomes this obstacle, they will truly be a force to be reckoned with.
  • PII - Personally identifying information is allowed in other tools such as IBM Digital Analytics and Adobe Site Catalyst. The inability to pass something as simple as an email address into an enterprise analytics tools like Google Analytics Premium is not only an annoyance, but a barrier to integrations with other tools such as email marketing platforms.
  • Add Ons -- Vendors like IBM and Adobe are building out awesome add-ons that boost the value of their product offerings. For example, IBM offers Digital Recommendations (previously known as Intelligent Offer), which uses analytics data to serve up real-time intelligent product recommendations on a site. This integrated add-on provides a ROI and further incentivizes the brand to stick with the IBM product suite.

We had and still have a fantastic experience using Adobe CQ. Lots of flexibility, great integration with other Adobe products we already use and a powerful technology make it a great fit for our corporate environment. Also as the community grows, it makes it easier to network with other developers and users to get new ideas on how to continue to get the best out of the software.

Once GAP is implemented properly, it runs like a well oiled machine. There isn't a lot of maintenance of the tool and your reports keep piping in trusted data. If enhancements are made to the tracking code, there are ways defined by GAP to ensure data consistency and accuracy. Overall, this tool will help anyone get up and running with accurate analytics data for a fraction of the cost.

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

Google has a great strategy in that it gets people to adopt its products at a mass scale. It gets people in by giving them the product for free. It keeps them around by having a solid product that is easy to use. This applies to Google Analytics Premium, which takes advantage of the developments of the free version. In fact, sometimes the simplicity of its usability is held against GA, in that the advanced power users want to avoid interfaces and wizards and just get right to raw querying and modeling of data themselves. But overall, I believe that the usability of this product will be what helps GA Premium take the throne in terms of enterprise analytics solutions - it will be most likely to be adopted by the full enterprise.

During my experience, we interacted many times with the vendor from whom we bought GAP and they supported us with many important updates, products and reports. However, I had advised a few product/features changes but never saw any action being taken there.

Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

If you already have the basic version of GA installed, "getting" GA Premium happens immediately through a virtual flipping of the switch - no need to re-implement. You'll want to expand your use of custom dimensions and metrics (you get 10x the amount with Premium). Ideally, you'll be using a tag management solution to talk with GA Premium, in concert with implementing a dataLayer (to note, Google's Tag Manager platform is covered under the same GA Premium SLA, and it's free). There are some welcomed "configurations" with GA Premium, such as integrating with DoubleClick products, activating data driven attribution models, and building roll-up executive reports - but all of these are easy point and click solutions. In comparison with any other enterprise analytics solution, implementing GA and GA Premium is traditionally easier and more flexible. And if you have any trouble or need an extra set of hands for implementation, GA Certified Partners like LunaMetrics can help

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Experience Manager

I think AEM is specific to the client's needs and is not necessarily comparable to all other platforms. However, when compared feature to feature I think AEM many times is a leader in the industry. While WordPress has progressed in the WYSIWYG interface it is not there still today and this is truly where AEM shines against all of the other CMS platforms.

Piwik: On the downside, it counts time spent on the page the same way GA does. The interface looks cluttered as if it’s missing a stylesheet. And while its main focus is being a GA alternative, it can’t compete with Google’s AdSense and AdWords integration. But to be fair, most alternatives can’t either.
Kissmetrics: The real-time functionality shows you some basic information about the current events (like a purchase) being done on your site. Visually not very appealing, but watching money rolling in in real time can be satisfying.
Woopra: Woopra does take some time to set up because you need to be sure it’s fully integrated. But after that, it is way more powerful than GA if you like to dig deep into your data.
