Adobe Target

I feel you need to have a dedicated developer who works solely in Test & Target. If you have that resource, and ensure to train the resource sufficiently, it will make it much easier to be able to run tests and have a clean testing program.

I would want to know whether the colleague works either in a setting in which conversion optimization is an important business goal, or has a large analytics but not user testing budget (just like my company). In this case I would definitely recommend ClickTale.

Pros

Adobe Target

  • Advanced segmentation and targeting by leveraging the integrations with the rest of Adobe's Digital Marketing Suite - e.g. AudienceManager and Adobe Analytics - as well as by leveraging the built-in automated decisioning and targeting.
  • The campaign configuration process within the UI is very intuitive making it relatively easy to set up basic campaigns.
  • The reporting UI makes it easy to interpret results, examine segments, and push winners.

  • Video recordings of users during their entire session to a website. To actually see the cursor, where it goes, does it scroll to the bottom of the page and then back up and then back down where a user finds what they were looking for that they missed the first time. This is invaluable.
  • Vertical page scroll let's me know how far down a page content is being seen. This coupled with the page recordings gives me the ability to know if the scroll was at a pace that could support comprehension or if they were just flying to the bottom of the page.
  • Mouse hover heat map gives me an indication of where users are looking. I've caught users thinking non-clickable items were clickable.
  • Being able to select a page and watch as many users as I want interact with it. I can get a sense of common user patterns in depth for a single page or a flow of several pages.
  • Page duration versus cursor engagement duration. This was a huge surprise in user behavior for me to learn about that is never duplicated in moderated user testing. If a user opens a link in a new window or tab there is no guarantee that the amount of time the window or tab was open that the user was actively engaged with it's content.

Cons

Adobe Target

  • User interface needed a lot of work, in particular with the use of MBoxes. This has supposedly been improved upon though with the latest release.
  • To build out specific segments required direct knowledge of how to write javascript, which isn't in the wheelhouse of our marketing team.
  • Creating offers required direct knowledge of html.

ClickTale

  • I always felt not providing me with the ability to grant others in my company with rights restricted access was a huge downside. This forced me into being the sole point of contact for anything that had to do with Clicktale.
  • Hugely lacking in the ability for me to build reports using the quantitative data. It was very labor intensive for me to gather and analyze data from Clicktale.
  • I missed out in a lot of functionality not having an enterprise level subscription. I had the gold subscription. Many of the things I wanted to capture were not possible without involving their developers - and that was only possible at the enterprise subscription level.

There are no other tools out there that I'm aware of that cover the qualitative aspects of user interaction with the website in such a comprehensive manner.

Can be difficult to learn, but once you understand Mboxes and the nuances of the system it's very user friendly

I had some issues interacting with viewing recordings of a specific page by many users but my impression was that this was going to be fixed.

In-Person Training

Adobe Target

Adobe Target 8.1
Based on 3 answers
The instructor that came to train us was awesome and this training was very useful. I would recommend it for anyone who is going to be using this software. I only mark it lower because it is an added expense to an already expensive product, and a lot of the training covered the "Target" portion of the software (which again, we didn't use)

Online Training

Adobe Target

Adobe Target 6.1
Based on 3 answers
The training was very easy to understand, however it would have been more useful to my development team than me. It was also primarily over-the-phone, which is never as easy to follow as in-person. We ended up scheduling and paying for an in-person training session to supplement the online/phone training because it wasn't helpful enough.

The only other website analytical tool I have used is Google Analytics. They both have some overlap but Google Analytics is much more broad, while ClickTale focuses on what it does and provides tools and analysis to work within its area of expertise. When used together, more information is able to be gathered and thus shown the relationship between the behaviours of our visitors.

  • We've had trouble calculating and quantifying an ROI, however the overall impression is faster conversation, larger orders, and better customer experience.
