ALB Legal Software

It has all you need built in right out of the box with all the core features you'd expect; Client Matter Inception process, Time Recording, Diary, Customisable Workflow modules, Billing, etc. Then there's all the extra modules which other products don't necessarily have; Wills and Deeds databases, Purchase Ledger (Accounts and Cashiers love everything to do with the accounts side), Laserform Integration, pdfDocs integration, OverVu integration for easy reporting.

Inevitably there will be compromises as with any piece of software. Especially one that covers off so many angles. The development tools could be stronger, the way addresses are handled seems to me to be overly complex. Having said that though, the software's primary purpose is to help Fee Earners and support staff provide services to clients and it does this admirably. You can't expect Visual Studio. I've seen users make a mess of the simplest of address databases with strong training provided so it might not be to my taste but I imagine they didn't develop it for fun.

My biggest gripe with the software is that some errors look severe. Other software would trap them in a more gentle manner. However, users quickly adjust to this and Advanced do some very clear monitoring to reduce them as the product mores forward.

Clio

For solo and small practices Clio provides a lot of bang for the buck. Its billing and invoicing capabilities are very robust. Its integrations with other software packages, such as QuickBooks, Next Chapter, Mailchimp, etc. make it very easy to implement and grow marketing initiatives. It has the ability to create templates from existing documents that help improve efficiencies in creating client documents and keeping specific types of documents uniform. It has a logical flow to it. Even if you have never used it before and not gone through the onboarding process or tutorial videos, you can figure it out.

Pros

ALB Legal Software

  • Document storage and retrieval seem to work well. Loading documents, archiving them, and retrieving them, etc.
  • Time recording is also a useful feature as well as a little more intuitive than you'd expect.
  • Integrating legal accounting has been a great feature as well.

Clio

  • Timekeeping. All I have to do is open Clio in the morning and press the "start timekeeping" button if I am too lazy to type in a few words.
  • Billing. The new interface is really easy to use.
  • Calendar. I use two calendars for deadlines, etc. My G-Suites calendar and Clio.

Cons

ALB Legal Software

  • At times the dashboard and User Experience and User Interface do not follow a logical pathway. It can be confusing at times, but not extremely detrimental.
  • The client portal has also experienced some issues with the User interface and user experience functions as well.

Clio

  • The billing screen is serviceable but unwieldy. It is hard to get your bills to look the way that you want in many cases.
  • The document management process could stand some improvement. In order to manipulate a document, you have to download it, work on it, then re-upload the new version. I'd like a local client or a seamless way to edit and then automatically see the update taken into Clio.
  • The task entry is good but not great. I'd like to see a way to have it integrate into my iPhone's reminders list.
  • The quickbooks online sync has been a constant source of frustration for our bookkeeper, who has to monitor daily and hardly ever goes a day without an item failing to sync.

Usability

ALB Legal Software

ALB Legal Software 6.0

The usability is slightly above average. The all-in-one approach has been great and useful, but some of the functionality and user experience and user interface issues can affect usability. Some might be nitpicky, but not following logical pathways or ones that may pose issues for those that have disabilities can really create issues.

Onboarding new employees has its challenges, but orienting in Clio has been an easy process for new learners. Also, when I have encountered questions, Clio support has immediate answers.

The support, if we are talking about technical support with the product itself when issues arise, is average. It's not terrible, but not great either. It is average and what you might expect. Some issues are delayed in getting responses and we constantly have to be upgrading to higher tiers or developers. Some responses are quick though. Response time could be improved, much like other organizations.

Rather than talk in generalities, I'll give two specific examples. First, after updating my OS, I got locked out of Clio. I was back in, up and running, with no loss of data, within an hour thanks to Clio customer support.Second, I made some specific recommendation for features that I thought would be useful. Those recommendations fell in a black hole, with the suggestion that I try a very buggy third party integration app. Clio is making lots of money from lawyers using its software. Why can't Clio create the integrations and test them if Clio is not willing to build them into its platform?

Alternatives Considered

ALB Legal Software

ALB Legal Software is a more efficient product than MyCase and PracticePanther mostly for the integration it allows and the "all in one" approach that it takes. It takes several different areas and functions of legal practice and puts in one platform eliminating the need to leverage 2-3 platforms sometimes i.e. timekeeping, document management, mobile access, client portal, etc. Keeping it under one roof helps.

Clio

CLIO Grow is custom-tailored for law firms to use off the shelf with some advanced customization options. CLIO Grow has some superior API integration options that integrate with answering services, online chatbot, website contact forms to capture new leads and automatically include them in the intake pipeline. As mentioned previously it integrates with HelloSign for no additional costs.CLIO Grow also offers API integrations with Mailchimp to add prospects to email drip campaigns in addition to built-in automated email campaigns within its own software. These features make it far more user friendly, automated, and robust compared with MyCase's CRM feature, and Pipedrive (a non-legal specific CRM).
