Bacula Enterprise

Bacula Enterprise fits a certain type of market. The Unix-based sysadmin who has a diverse range of systems to back up and is happy to get their hands dirty with command-line tools and text-based configuration files. They have a large range of plugins to back up specific systems (eg. databases, VMs, and lots more) making it a truly flexible product in a single package. Addons like B web further improve on the already well-equipped product. However, this approach may not suit everyone, so I'd be hesitant recommending it in all situations.

Pros

Arcserve Backup

  • A solid reliable backup solution with a proven track record.
  • Great functionality that allows monitoring and provides alerts.
  • A cost-effective solution, especially for smaller sites.
  • Restoration when needed, has always been able to give us the data required without failure.
  • Product support has always been excellent when needed.

Bacula Enterprise

  • Proactive support - Once a year, Bacula will proactively send me a report on how my Bacula Enterprise environment is running and what changes they recommend that I change to optimise my backup environment. I've found this to be extremely helpful and unique as most other companies don't do this.
  • Robustness - In the last 10 years this product has caused our company hardly any issues. Once it's setup correctly and to your liking, it hardly needs any maintenance. The only major issue we had was with the community version and once we switched to the Enterprise version this was fixed immediately.
  • Support - Their support is second to none. Whenever I've had an issue, big or small, they resolved it within a few hours. In one case where our RAID array failed on the main Bacula drive (using community version), they managed to get our backups up and working in 24 hours. They appreciated the seriousness of the situation and provided the appropriate resources for us to get the job done.

Cons

Arcserve Backup

  • Has a steep learning curve to the product, if not experienced in backup solutions.
  • Windows backup and restore functionality is excellent, however, we have found Linux somewhat lacking.

Bacula Enterprise

  • The Bacula Enterprise takes a while to understand and install. I found the terminology that Bacula Enterprise used to be a bit different from what I was used to and I needed to think about our backups in a slightly different way than I was used to. It seemed at first that it was too complex, but actually it is very straightforward and very flexible and very powerful. Looking back, I don't know how I could do without the options I have with Bacula Enterprise.
  • Also, although Bacula Enterprise is well documented with manuals, whitepapers, articles and even books, I find it a bit difficult to navigate through all the available information. More than once I've read through an explanation of a feature only to find out that it no longer applies and that I should have read a different paper. I've learned to ask support for the right article to read, but I'd rather see the documentation organized better so I can learn on my own.
  • Personally I prefer working with configuration files and text consoles, but if I were looking for a slick graphical user interface, Bacula Enterprise does not have it.
  • Bacula Enterprise technical support is excellent, but the ticketing system needs work. One creates a ticket on a web portal but can only follow up on that ticket via email. I would very much like to update the ticket on the website as well as via email.

Arcserve UDP provides our organization lots of benefits and it is much more than a simple backup and restore solution. We use it for cross platform DR, storage agnostic replications, DR solution instead of VMware SRM and more.

Easy to use, proactive and effective customer support, and simple deployment method. The high configurability is what makes this tool so effective for my organization - at no point do I have any issues of trust as to the restorability of a fileset. The GUI provided gives clear actionable reports as to the effectivity of the jobs performed.

It still has a lot of flaws to overcome, especially in the area of user friendliness. Searching and filtering is quite cumbersome. Once you find the job you from which you want to restore, be sure to write that job number down because you won't be able to quickly find the job again without it during a recovery.

I have never, in over 20 years in information technology, encountered a more responsive, competent, and helpful support team. Examples:
  • Average time from ticket creation to initial acknowledgement (ticket assigned to an engineer): <15 minutes
  • Correct answers the 1st time, every time
  • New Feature Request was accepted, written, and implemented in less than 30 days

Alternatives Considered

Arcserve Backup

It is easy to deploy and manage. Solid data recovery and good notification option. We need to backup to tape to retain 7 years thus D2D2T is a good option to have.

Bacula Enterprise

Some of the Bacula Enterprise competitors are well fitted for a certain task like Virtual Machines backups or Database backups. Bacula Enterprise, with its flexibility and plugins, was able to achieve the same level of performance of all other tools together, reducing the complexity of the environment and the team's learning curve.

Return on Investment

Arcserve Backup

  • Deploying Arcserve UDP with the "copy-to-tape" option allowed us to reuse well over 50 LTO5 tapes used by our previous backup solution. Further, we extended data retention on site (maintaining monthly backups on disk) as well as extending off site data retention on tape.

Bacula Enterprise

  • Quite transparently for the applications to allow online backup and guaranteed enough confidence due to its efficient algorithms of verification of media and blocks.
  • The cost of purchasing and updating the annual support is very low compared to other "Veeam and Backup Exec" tools that I analyzed in the pre-project phase.
