Arcserve Backup

Restorations are easy and painless. These Arcserve appliances have exceeded my expectations. Our daily “bread-and-butter” operations revolve around web servers and databases. I feel more confident than ever that file/database recovery operations will continue to be successful. These appliances live up to their claims.

Bacula Enterprise

You really need to spend more time in the Bacula implementation phase and I do not recommend it for sysadmins who do not have Linux experience because of the architectural quirks and they do not run the "DIR Director" server on a Windows platform.
The agent for Linux clients is very stable and of today I have had no problems.

Pros

  • Backup of Virtual and Physical Machines
  • Replication
  • Instant Virtual Machines
  • Copy to Tape
  • Automatic testing of Disaster Recovery environments
  • Virtual standby automatic restore of VM's and Physical machines
  • Backup using hardware snapshots
  • Backup of Exchange 365

  • Back up a very good and simple package of files, including compression and different levels, differential and incremental.
  • BWEB's html interface is very good and intuitive for the amount of backup and clients I need to monitor and manage.
  • In smaller branch offices, the managers manually trigger the backup "because it varies the time of shutdown of each branch", with tool bconsole I was able to easily customize this drive inside our application, simplifying enough for the end user.

Cons

  • File System Archive is limited without stubbing
  • Virtual Standby is limited to Windows only

  • The vsphere plugin works 100%, could have been more intuitive and practical. For example -To specify that you want to restore a backup of a VM, enter the "where" parameter / because the default value "/ tmp / bacula-restore" would restore the .bmdk files in the plugin client.
  • An identification of the name of the virtual machine in the act of restoration and naming for Bacula Systems as "Host Name" would be more intuitive "Guest Name or VM-Name", since Host implies "Host ESXi".
  • After running the datastore from a VM, there is no bacula for the backup to continue.
  • A compression could have been a multi-thread on the client to make faster, when a document was not available on Bacula Systems roadmap.

Arcserve UDP provides our organization lots of benefits and it is much more than a simple backup and restore solution. We use it for cross platform DR, storage agnostic replications, DR solution instead of VMware SRM and more.

Management is keen on cost saving. I prefer the pervious backup solution we had, but support was getting expensive. I think Bacula has a lot of growing up to do before I would put it in the same category as the "big boys," but they are making progress. With the help of customers' feedback and tickets, they'll get there in the next year or two.

It still has a lot of flaws to overcome, especially in the area of user friendliness. Searching and filtering is quite cumbersome. Once you find the job you from which you want to restore, be sure to write that job number down because you won't be able to quickly find the job again without it during a recovery.

Alternatives Considered

We have selected ARCserve v.s the competition for several reasons - the Arcserve UDP data reduction was by far better than the competition, Additionally we found the solution easy to use compared to other alternatives, with the greatest replication and advanced features such as immediate access to backed up data without restore, SLA meeting and more.

Cost: Bacula wins hands down on cost.Deduplication: CommVault is, as they put it, hardware agnostic when it comes to deduplication, and is really fast. Bacula does deduplication too, but not nearly as well. CommVault's deduplication remains deduplicated across all media. Not so for Bacula.Reliability: Having worked with CommVault for many years, I still have much more faith in its reliability and support. However, Bacula is doing a pretty darned good job of getting a ton of systems backed up regularly. EMC's NetWorker, on the other hand, NEVER had a even one day of successful backups in over a three year period. In the end, our company selected Bacula because of the cost savings and the belief that it would be reliable enough to cover and recover at least 90 percent of our systems.

Return on Investment

  • Using arcserve UDP we managed to reuse the storage used for the previous solution and extend the backup retention to 3 months from two weeks!
  • The cost of using a single solution for backup, DR and replication is much lower than using backup software, VMware SRM and storage replications.
  • BMR capabilities and v2v allows us to use VMware on the production mixture of VMware and hyper-v on the DR to reduce the costs.

  • Quite transparently for the applications to allow online backup and guaranteed enough confidence due to its efficient algorithms of verification of media and blocks.
  • The cost of purchasing and updating the annual support is very low compared to other "Veeam and Backup Exec" tools that I analyzed in the pre-project phase.
