ASG-Remote Desktop

Best for users that have many desktops or servers they need to login to. Great in my environment of multiple clients and the need for fast login and resolution of their issue. If you have a large infrastructure or multiple clients, this is a product you need!

ConnectWise Control

ConnectWise Control is great when you need to see the desktop to get a handle on a problem.ConnectWise Control is not great for running remote commands or for scripting. Though it will process commands, you would not want to try and push out software to dozens/hundreds of machines using it.

Pros

  • Organize remote desktop connections
  • Provide easy and fast connections
  • Backup and restore configurations

  • It's easy to use. I have users in our electronic security department that struggle with TeamViewer, LogMeIn, Dameware, and other remote access solutions, but can use ConnectWise Control without issue.
  • It does the job of multiple softwares (ad-hoc support, managed remote access, and web meetings) for the price of one. This reduces our total spend and reduces the number of systems we have to keep up with.
  • It's fast. Compared to LogMeIn and TeamViewer, it's much faster overall and much more usable on low quality connections.

Cons

  • Can be overly complicated at first, but you can add into the features as you build your organization skills
Tina Cline profile photo
  • I am sure there are a lot of capabilities we are not utilizing due to lack of knowledge of these tools
  • Having a more hands-on tutorial/manual would be a tremendous asset

This software was really the best choice for our company. We use it to remote to any and all workstations in what I call my farm. It is effortless, it lets the users know that we are connecting, it has an easy way to switch between screens, it is not overly complicated, and very stable. Very important for me was that the users could see what I was doing, and of course that is not the case with RDP. I highly recommend this software as an excellent way to support users. I use this in a job where I am supporting between 80 and 100 workstations.

On the whole SC is a very powerful tool that is a vital part of the IT service arsenal. On-site visits are an "emergency" only type of scenario. Just "showing your face" is not winning any browny points for me. If my client sees my face, it's usually just to upgrade hardware or to deal other aspects of business. SC provides me and my client the bulk of the info I need to get projects done.

The past 45 days, only had one outage that lasted about 15 minutes. NOT TOO SHABBY! There have been some unexpected reboots and moves but not a show stopper in any way.

It performs well. It also has full control over windows security and does not get hung up like GoToMeeting when trying to install remote software at the prompt to install as admin / override. I have used TeamViewer, WebEx, LogMeIn and GoToMeeting. This is by far the best at spontaneous, remote control. It is also very easy to get a novice user connected to the session.

I believe there should be a better site that has more detailed status of SC network and specific to the individual instance. A good example of an excellent support site is DuoCircle - their service can be better, but their support structure allows for a forum like conversation (with historical info)

I find ScreenConnect to be very simple and effective overall, with the main problem being that a number of my clients can't download the app due to existing firewalls and so on. Otherwise it does its job well, and I'm happy with it.

Reach out to IT service providers like myself if you need help with deployment. Standardizing on all your servers and desktops will be a great help. Uninstalling LogMeIn is a nightmare, since you need an admin username and password for each machine before you can run a script on it. Domains are much easier but lone wolves and workgroups are a major chore. Get this done first before attempting to launch your migration. Documentation is VERY important, especially of usernames and passwords where needed. Once you're on ScreenConnect, will help with this. Get good on scripting for functionality. Much can be done via the Tools function of ScreenConnect - but it will be a mixture of PowerShell/DOS and a little Linux shell

Alternatives Considered

ASG-Remote is very flexible and with so many options available it makes the configuration you want for your setup super simple. Other products do not offer the extra features for database and reporting. As well, it offers all the connection types you can possibly think of. The ability to automate tasks for regular servers and workstations is amazing!

ConnectWise Control has more control options that both of the listed products but the only issue is TeamViewer and Splashtop make the initial connection process muck easier

As far as I can see there are no real barriers to scaling up - as and when we need more subscriptions, we can add them in with no negative impact to the existing way that we're using the tool
