Asigra

I have been working with backup solutions for around 14 years now. Asigra is one solution that has a wide range of features and functionalities while retaining the simplicity of usage and making it a very simple product to learn and start using. What is also important is the post sales support wherein the product code is done so well that you rarely need to engage Asigra's support team for escalations and support calls. On top of it, Asigra technical support works very well to ensure you are taken care of well & quickly. This is one of the most important things that you look for while evaluating any product as you need to have the right people around you when you are in trouble.

CloudBerry Backup

For any Managed Service Provider (MSP) that offers backups services to its clients, Cloudberry MBS is a winning solution. It is fast, powerful, flexible and priced to provide room for decent profit margins for the MSP. MSP's that handle clients so large that they need Appliance-based backups and recovery will need more sophisticated (read pricier) solutions, but for the vast majority of customers that have 1-10 servers, CloudberryLab MBS is an excellent solution.

Pros

  • Provides capability of local backups while maintaining remote copies on cloud to ensure faster recoveries of recent data and remote protection of all data.
  • Helps reduce cost of long term retention by leveraging the BLM functionality.
  • It does not need specialized hardware for it to work. Customers and Service Providers can choose their own infrastructure and do not need to rely on any OS or storage based replication even for deploying replication of backups.
  • Supports wide range of environments including virtual environments with remarkable features like remote VDR with incremental restores.

  • A wide array of choices for Backend storage - We use Amazon, Google, Backblaze and Wasabi
  • Flexible Retention policies - We keep data/versions locally for one year, at Google for 90 days, and at Amazon for 30 days.
  • Extremely low price point allowing us to charge prices that are competitive with Mozy and provide fully managed backup services
  • Extremely powerful central management console allowing us to monitor, edit, and run backups and restores for all client devices from any computer or mobile device

Cons

  • Intuitive GUI - Cosmetic
  • Phone App based dashboard / management console - Nice to have
  • Lite version for SOHO / small smb customers
Matthew Harris profile photo
  • Reporting of summarized historical Backup activity by the client is weaker than it could be. Cloudberry has reached out via their Customer Forum to gather requirements and preferences, indicating that they are aware that it needs additional development
  • The hybrid backup implementation is powerful (Local backup with data sent to Cloud afterward) but lacks the ability to have different retention periods for each destination

I love Cloudberry. I am using it at three different sites to backup their mission critical file servers and it works great. It is a very cost effective backup solution that is easy to setup and use and the support is also very good. I would recommend it to anyone that needs a good backup solution for their business.

Easy to use, great scalability, feature packed... Asigra is truly an end-to-end enterprise solution, not simply a point product. Asigra handles backup and restoration of client data across multiple OS platforms- Windows, Linux, Unix, IBM AS400, Mac X, etc... They include servers, desktops, laptops, mobile devices, virtual and physical machines. Some key features to note: Deduplication, Continuous Data Protection, Agentless Backup, Replication (New), Silent mode installation, Best of breed/start of art Security, Storage Discovery/Assessment tools, Autonomic healing... and more.Asigra simplifies Cloud backup, period. Do your clients want a full Public Cloud, Hybrid... what about Private built solution? Asigra handles all, with ease and, with over 26 years of ZERO security breaches.

The screens are very easy to understand and very detailed. I have not had any issues finding what I was looking for or understanding what options to use to create my backups. Cloudberry has a simple easy to use interface that is well designed and the documentation is excellent compared to some other backup software I have used in the past.

Reliability and Availability

Asigra8.8
Based on 5 answers
At the front of Asigra availability is the N+1 capabilities of the DS-System. Multiple nodes that load balance and are fault tolerant giving the DS-System a robust availability offering. The N+1 can survive as long as 50% +1 of the nodes are running. Data availability is strong via Asigra's replication module. Both bidirectional and unidirectional replication for the DS-System exist. Bidirectional replication requires the MSP to purchase double the licensing. That cost is going to be passed on to the customer. Many MSP's opt for the unidirectional, which requires a manual switch over on the DS-License server to change a replication vault to a production vault. With that being said, Asigra replication is very efficient and allows for multiple, in-region and out-region backup vaults. The DS-System works best on Linux utilizing PostgreSQL for the backend database. Ideally, this should be clustered. Clustering a PostgreSQL database is not as straight forward as doing it with Microsoft. That adds some administrative overhead and requires some PostgreSQL expertise end users and MSP's have to find. The Windows DS-Client, the piece doing the backup, can be gridded for a multi-node backup cluster. Unfortunately, the Linux DS-Client cannot be gridded.

Online Training

Asigra1.0
Based on 1 answer
Anything training past level 1 and level 2 is a waste of time. They do not offer training, just an exam and require you to read 2500 pages of their documentation as their training. They are selling you something which you already have. Training exams are far fetched and cover topics hidden within the documentation. A lot of their documentation does not match across itself. They don't even follow the standard versions Major.Minor.ServicePack.Hotfix. They use the MAJOR.MAJOR.MAJOR.Hotfix method, which doesn't match their documentation. They require you to take training in order to keep your engaged hybrid partnership. If you ask me personally, their training is a scam to make more money.

Implementation

Quick to install, easy to create jobs, schedules and retention policies. No large cycles of setting up backup volumes or trash volumes. Retention job itself configures the BLM functionality so you don't need an expertise to handle the BLM module separately.

Alternatives Considered

When evaluating Asigra against Commvault we found the following:Commvault - Expensive licensing, per socket, VM,
agent, TB etc. = > HW costs, pro
services = > TCOCommvault - Did not at the time backup Office 365, Google Apps,
Salesforce.com and could not be recovered locallyCommvault - Did not at the time Backup/Recover Docker Containers

Mozy Pro is/was a decent product for self-service backup, but our typical client is not tech savvy enough to handle fixing the common errors (permissions, encrypted files etc> ) that cause failures. They do not monitor the backups on a regular basis, and they have no idea how to properly execute a restore. There is no ability to chose from multiple back-end storage platforms, retention periods are not nearly as flexible, the upload speed is slower and it does not have the bandwidth throttling that Cloudberry possesses, and it does not have true client-side encryption keys at least when we used it).

Return on Investment

  • Speed of recovery
  • Simplicity of recovery
  • Like all recovery solutions, they are only as good as your backup policy and specifically your procedures
Matthew Harris profile photo
  • Since switching from Mozy Pro to Cloudberrylab four years ago, our ROI has been extremely positive. The reliability of the product has improved significantly such that we do not need to dedicate much staff time to monitor/manage the backups on a daily basis.
  • By designating a backup specialist within our organization tasked with keeping up with the latest features, testing restores, and fixing any issues that arise with client backups, we have a high level of efficiency and can respond to restore requests in a very short timeframe.
  • We have been able to lower the per GB price to our customers and still maintain our overall profitability for our backup service
