Azure Sentinel

Azure Sentinel is an excellent option like SIEM. It has cool, smart features and functionality, and is quite powerful in terms of processing information in the cloud. I recommend it to colleagues because it is very easy to deploy and configure, and learn to use it on a daily basis. The panel is super intuitive and rich in details. When opening Sentinel, it is already possible to analyze the indices that happened and those that deserve further attention and treatment.

New Relic

For monitoring specific URLs for response time, tracking performance of an application over time, and being able to drill down to the function level where an app component might be experiencing an issue, it seems to be well suited. Also, the overall NR suite seems to experience rapid changes, which could potentially be somewhat unsettling to users who are trying to get familiar with a feature area. I'm unsure also, how consistently these are documented. It seems to have less ability them some other products, to be able to see what low-level procedures on the code or DB side could be bottlenecks.

Pros

Azure Sentinel

  • Free of charge, because it is a tool to work with MS products
  • Easy to configure MS data sources
  • Edit rules of log analytics
  • KQL language is quite similar to SQL
  • Integration with other MS products
  • Adding new analytical rules
  • Nice data visualization
  • Saves our time, when everything is under one roof

New Relic

  • The New Relic agent does a great job of monitoring and profiling an application.
  • The New Relic alerts make it easy for us to define when individuals should be alerted to an issue.
  • New Relic Synthetics helps us monitor our websites and provide insights into our uptimes.

Cons

Azure Sentinel

  • Better integration with third-party tools
  • More connectors for third-party tools
  • Better online training available
  • More built-in queries

New Relic

  • Sometimes we can't drill down deep enough on errors or traces.
  • Inter communication paths are not obvious (stack) though service maps are helpful at times.
  • I often feel like it's not really built for cloud monitoring and microservices.
  • There are additional plugins that our IT dept can't seem to get working with our product, like Kubernetes, PostgreSQL.

I have not yet found any similar product that offers me this range of features to help us keep our online service fast and reliable. Besides this, New Relic is constantly evolving by adding new plugins to emerging technologies and platforms. Server performance measuring features are a key point as our user database grows.

It can be a little difficult for someone who is not familiar with SIEM, but otherwise, it's easy to learn. With all the features it can be daunting sometimes, but other than that, we were able to get integrated without much of a headache. Azure's products all around are great and we will continue to be customers!

As an engineer, New Relic has been very quick and easy for me to pick up/install/use. It has been less easy for some of the less technical-minded folks in our organization and their UI still is inconsistent multiple years after refactoring their platform to be New Relic One.

There are times I feel that the initial support is lacking. And in some cases the automated responses of not hearing anything are annoying if the reason why there has been no movement is because we are still waiting to hear back from NR support. So, i think they should loose the automation as it can seem disingenuous

The documentation was clear and concise; the only issue we ran into was custom application naming. Due to HTTPD mod_fcgid and the need for the application name to be set in php.ini (not in .htaccess or the virtual host directive) ... we had issues setting this up.

Alternatives Considered

Azure Sentinel

Azure Sentinel is much more cost effective and affordable than FortiSIEM and especially compared to Splunk Enterprise. Azure Sentinel is easier and faster to implement and does not require having any on-premises setup. It's purely software. There is no need to install any hardware on your network and you do not need to tap into the network and sniff all the traffic. All the software components of the solutions reside in Azure. You need to send the logs to Azure. The only thing that needs to be done on the servers where you want to monitor logs is install a small, small agent that will have the info of your Log Anaytics and a key to be able to connect and upload the logs. If you are versed in Microsoft technology, there is not much training required to get it going. There is the KQL language for writing queries that might be kind of new but then, on the other hand, any SIEM product has its own subscription language and syntax that needs to be learned, so Azure Sentinel is no different.

New Relic

New Relic has a lot of benefits comparing to other solutions. The main one is usability, compared to other solutions on the market, the interface and usability beats everything else and without good user experience, the user tends to ignore the solution.Great APM integration, easy and simple, which our developing teams love. And Synthetics is way ahead of anything out there, very simple and robust solution that gives us a lot of resources.

Azure Sentinel

  • In case you [are] using Microsoft cloud products [and] you need a response about security incidents.
  • Most tasks can be automated, you just need to visit the collected logs to see what's happened.
  • Alerts appear on the dashboard, signaling about threats and violations - constant monitoring of the incidents.

New Relic

  • I can't speak to this specifically as I'm just an end user, so I'll speak in terms of the impact on our team. We've used New Relic to monitor a new page we're still in the process of fully rolling out.
  • It allows us to keep an eye on our overall page performance (several different metrics), JavaScript error rate, and other custom logging to make sure the new page is not having any significant downturns in these areas.
  • By comparing these stats to the previous version of the page, we can feel confident in continuing to roll out the new page, and get early warning signs if something goes wrong.
  • Our high priority alerts are tied in to OpsGenie so we get custom notifications off hours.
