Databox

I believe Databox can be an asset for any company. We are a small company, but I can see the value for large companies too. Databox is a great fit for departments or organizations that need to put their data into a readable form without needing a ton of reports. Databox allows you to save time and put together a nice report without having to do too much extra work. Once it is set up, it basically runs on its own at the frequency you set. I personally receive a daily report and have it sent to the respective people on the day of our meeting so we can quickly review it.

Google Data Studio

GDS is a dashboarding solution that allows us to perform advanced data analysis and visualisation work for stakeholders and peers. It might not be suitable for large-scale data projects, but for us at the UoN, it’s the ideal solution. It is free and provides an excellent and ever-increasing list of connectors.
Additionally, with it being a Google product, it has a large community of users who are often on hand to lend advice and creative solutions.

Cons

Databox

  • Some types of data can only be reported on for 1-2 months back. Unless I'm misunderstanding the function of the software this seems really weird. I can't figure out how to report on Activities more than 2 months ago
Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

Google Data Studio

  • No native support for many outside sources like Facebook or Twitter (must build own or use third party software)
  • Many features that are available in Tableau or other dataviz solutions aren't available yet
  • Available templates aren't styled using default colors, so you have to update the color palette of each module by hand.
  • Data Score boxes are very limited in what they can report

It is the simplest and least expensive way for us to automate our reporting at this time. I like the ability to customize literally everything about each report, and the ability to send out reports automatically in emails. The only issue we have been having recently is a technical glitch in the automatic email report. Sadly, there is almost no support for this tool from Google, but is also free, so that is important to take into consideration

Databox is an intuitive, well-designed platform that can be used by non-technical marketers. It is easy to learn, and while set up takes time, usability is high and the team has enjoyed creating custom dashboards and clients have also given us great feedback regarding its usability and value. While other BI tools are much more complex to navigate, Databox is a breeze.

Google Data Studio has a clean interface that follows a lot of UX best practices. It is fairly easy to pick up the first time you use it, and there is a lot of documentation on line to help troubleshoot, if needed

I have really enjoyed using Databox and have seen the value of it in many ways. They also continue to improve the functions of it and grow their integrations and templates. I look forward to continuing to use Databox in the future, potentially even finding ways to incorporate it into other departments to help them with reporting as well.

I rated the overall support for Google Data Studio a five because it offers limited real-time chat of phone support. The best resource available to get analyst questions on Google Data Studio reporting and integration capabilities answered, is an online Google support portal with text and video tutorials: https://support.google.com/datastudio. But the analyst needs to know the correct keyword(s) to find accurate answers to his or her technical questions. Or be in the correct category of questions: Connect, Visualize, Share or Manage. So, the existing self-help portal works fine to answer basic questions on metrics, dimensions, how to integrate a data source, or how to create a custom report. It doesn't do a great job of answering advanced questions on why data doesn't match between Data Studio and Google Analytics. Why data is not showing up even though the dashboard sources have been refreshed, or how to create a custom Google Sheets to auto-update dashboard every month.

Alternatives Considered

Databox

Databox is unique in its ability to report from multiple data sources. Google Analytics is the standard when it comes to web metrics, but it's just one of the tools that integrates with Databox. Tableau is fantastic for data visualizations and reporting, but it's much more expensive than Databox, so it's not ideal for everyone. Tableau is also superior with customization

Google Data Studio

Google Analytics and Google Data studio work well with each other. They don't necessarily stack against each other, Google Data studio just makes interpreting the data more visual and concise. I recommend both and not one over the other. Both are free tools provided by Google, so I highly recommend using and understanding both.

Return on Investment

Databox

  • It has helped us to show our value to clients
  • Easily digestible dashboards make it easy to understand what you're looking at

Google Data Studio

• I would say we have had positive impacts. Initially we used excel for reporting, but it was not so user friendly, it did not have dynamic reporting and ease of sharing options. We were able to get analyze the data deeply and have dynamic reports with Data studio. Also, with the reports we were able to identify where we were going down, where we were performing badly.
