Druva inSync

Druva is ideal if you need an end-point backup solution and don't have an incredibly large on-prem storage unit to handle backups from multiple machines. On top of backups, it also has security and DLP controls, which allow for remote-wipe of data should a unit go missing. Druva inSync is NOT for production/server usage (Druva has another solution for that), as it's primary purpose and design is to protect endpoints. For ransomware protection, as the backups are not stored on the machine (or easily accessible without the Druva inSync program) the possibility of ransomware destroying backups is extremely low.

OneDrive

If a coworker asked me what software to use, I would recommend OneDrive because of the company standardization and the integration into Microsoft Office. If someone who didn't already have a standardized software platform asked me then I would probably recommend looking at other options just because I have had hit-or-miss success with the reliability of syncing to the cloud. I use it to sync files between two laptops that I use but there have been a few times where I swapped laptops but the second laptop was missing a file that hadn't synced yet, even though plenty of time was available to sync. It's great for sending large files to people because you can specify their level of activity (download/view only or edit as well).

Pros

Druva inSync

  • The ability to track file access with the auditing system is unparalleled. We can generate reports on a user or on a file/folder to see who has accessed it and when.
  • When a file went missing we reviewed when it was last accessed and it was deleted 6 months ago. With Druva inSync we were able to not only recover the file but determine who deleted it and inform them of better practices so it wasn't accidentally deleted again. This was incredible and invaluable.
  • Managing teams of users and how they access folders/files is great and very simple.
  • We often share access to folders or files with our clients during the software development phase and having the ability to revoke access as needed is fantastic. If you accidentally sent a link out for sensitive files you would be able to revoke access to that link and generate a new one rather quickly.

OneDrive

  • OneDrive does a great job of keeping file version history. I have had to use this feature many times and it is very simple to use. This one feature has saved my butt many times.
  • OneDrive synchronizes across devices very quickly. There have been many instances when I have added files online and, within seconds, saw the file show up on my local computer. This happens the other direction also. I am very impressed and satisfied with the speed of syncing in all directions.
  • The OneDrive app on my phone has been particularly helpful since it automatically syncs my photos (usually within seconds) and allows me access to all my files.

Cons

Druva inSync

  • Restoration Log Report, should match file name to Microsoft's Activity log. One for one comparison helps to ensure that all files were restored.
  • They need a report that also allows me to know if a backup process is taking a more than normal amount of time. I had one user whose backup started August 28th and was still running Sept 15th. This to me, would be a "failed" backup, but it was just stuck and none of their reports alerted me.
  • I really don't have a third issue, Druva Rocks!

OneDrive

  • Sending Links - Though you can easily share links to files from the web experience, it isn't the same on the native experience. It would be nice if you could right click on a file to share its location with someone vs. opening the office application to share with others.
  • File Character Restrictions - This isn't just with OneDrive, but sometimes files will not upload due to an unsupported character in the file name.

Druva is the only tool has vast options to protect all kind of end user data. InSync setup is not only easy to set which also manage. Cost effective as compared to other data protection applications. as they are already in AWS cloud it is not burning our pocket incase of increase in data size or device size. Best support from the technical team

Due to its tight integration into the Microsoft ecosystem and its bundling into the Office 365 service, continued use of the product is all but guaranteed. Unless there's a shift away from Microsoft, I can see no competing product offering the same ease of use and integrations taking the place of OneDrive

The software is really lightweight, to the point you can adjust it to leave virtually no impact. No users have reported performance issues due to it, and most don't realize it's on their system. Deployment was really easy through PDQ, and monitoring/managing it is really hands-off from an IT standpoint. It works well.

I have given it this rating because it accomplishes the basic task that we use it for, storing and protecting our sensitive data. That being said, I hesitate to give it a completely positive rating, because I feel that the software performs at a bare minimum level, skimping out on some of the bells and whistles that would be nice.

Most issues I have can be solved without opening a ticket. But if I need to get in touch with a support agent, I can open a chat request and within minutes have a tech on the end assisting me. The few tickets I had to open were resolved on the first call.

Microsoft has worked hard to provide support as more work is done in the cloud. Within OneDrive you can easily get help and reach out for support if needed. Since OneDrive is commonly used you can also find resources on the web and even YouTube to solve any problems. It is so nice not having to buy a new version and simply have the latest updates pushed automatically via our Microsoft Office subscription.

In consultation with a Druva support person we configured a few policies first for several groups of users. Once that was done it was easy to add users and generate emails that contained links and instructions to download/install the app. Once installed, the app applied the appropriate policy and the sync of data began. We had 40 or so devices to protect, and in a week or less they were all protected. The delays usually were on the part of the user who needed to schedule some time (15-30 minutes at most) to accept the invitation and download/install the app.

Alternatives Considered

Druva inSync

We use Veeam to back up our virtual server infrastructure so naturally looked to Veeam when we wanted to backup Office365. The key difference here was the price. Veeam was several times more expensive than the Druva inSync and appeared to be a lot more complex and time-hungry to manage.

As previously mentioned, Google Drive is better for real-time collaboration, but not as intuitive when it comes to staying organized within a folder structure. Permissions model is easy to use but fairly unsophisticated.Dropbox doesn't offer real-time collaboration at all (to my knowledge), and doesn't offer the same fine-grained permissions that OneDrive does. It is a decent document store and not much else.

Return on Investment

Druva inSync

  • We have had multiple cases of data being lost while syncing from iPads to OneDrive in areas with limited mobile connectivity that would have required extra visits to sites, including international travel. The backup service paid for its first 3 years of usage within the first 6 weeks.

OneDrive

  • Being bundled into our Office 365 accounts makes the service very inexpensive compared to alternative cloud providers.
  • Providing our users with a cloud storage solution has definitely benefited our mobile employees by allowing them to have the files they need accessible to them in the field.
  • We're able to control the external sharing of documents to a much greater degree with OneDrive.
