I can't think of scenarios it would be less appropriate or suited for, but it is well suited for an organization looking to keep their files in a safe environment with version tracking and audit trails. That is pretty much any organization in this day and age. Computers are great but hardware breaks down intermittently so knowing you have your files in a secure location that won't ever fail is fantastic

OneDrive

OneDrive is well suited for quick storage and retrieval of important work documents. It allows users to share links to certain files which works well for collaboration. In terms of storage you can easily monitor how many GB you are using and even up storage in 1TB increments. OneDrive works so much like a file directory on a work PC so it is easy to learn and navigate around. It works well on both a PC and a Cell Phone.

Pros

Druva inSync

  • Restoring users and deleted files from both Cloud and desktop applications, with only a few button click.
  • The InSync dashboard allows me to see where all my assets are and when their last backups occurred.
  • The installation process was VERY easy. So getting everyone up and running was painless.

OneDrive

  • OneDrive does a great job of keeping file version history. I have had to use this feature many times and it is very simple to use. This one feature has saved my butt many times.
  • OneDrive synchronizes across devices very quickly. There have been many instances when I have added files online and, within seconds, saw the file show up on my local computer. This happens the other direction also. I am very impressed and satisfied with the speed of syncing in all directions.
  • The OneDrive app on my phone has been particularly helpful since it automatically syncs my photos (usually within seconds) and allows me access to all my files.

Cons

Druva inSync

  • As part of the initial setup, we had a few issues surrounding large numbers of accounts being backed up at the same time. This was more a Microsoft issue than anything, and with help from support, we resolved the issue.
  • The email reports can be a little useless on occasion. For example, I don't need an email every day with a failed backup report if there are no failures.
  • Again with email, the weekly backup report has so much information in it that the email sometimes fails to load. A simple email with a link to click would be better.

OneDrive

  • OneDrive's visual feedback in Finder as to whether a file is syncing or already synced isn't always up-to-date with the actual status of these files.
  • OneDrive (on Mac) will occasionally fail to sync for errors that aren't accurate, requiring a restart.
  • OneDrive (on Mac) will occasionally fail for file name issues, where filenames allowed on Mac are not allowed on SharePoint, without providing an easy mechanism for fixing them.
  • The real-time collaborative editing user experience is not as good as Google Drive.

We live in the cloud, Microsoft has some wonderful features, but the fact that you can't search and filter the recycling bin is a huge issue for us Admins

Aside from Druva taking away the Share feature just to push folks to the cloud, it's perfect for what it does and should have just continued to grow not have clueless management decide they wanted to migrate the on-premise customers to the cloud version and offer the share tool for them, this was just wrong and remains wrong.

I have given it this rating because it accomplishes the basic task that we use it for, storing and protecting our sensitive data. That being said, I hesitate to give it a completely positive rating, because I feel that the software performs at a bare minimum level, skimping out on some of the bells and whistles that would be nice.

Most issues I have can be solved without opening a ticket. But if I need to get in touch with a support agent, I can open a chat request and within minutes have a tech on the end assisting me. The few tickets I had to open were resolved on the first call.

Support seems to be limited, in my experience, to the general help articles offered online. Luckily we haven't experienced anything that has required more research than looking through those articles, and I can't imagine a scenario where you would need more support than that. Still, it would be nice to have a knowledgable person available to help you when an issue arises.

In consultation with a Druva support person we configured a few policies first for several groups of users. Once that was done it was easy to add users and generate emails that contained links and instructions to download/install the app. Once installed, the app applied the appropriate policy and the sync of data began. We had 40 or so devices to protect, and in a week or less they were all protected. The delays usually were on the part of the user who needed to schedule some time (15-30 minutes at most) to accept the invitation and download/install the app.

Alternatives Considered

Druva inSync

My biggest requirement for looking at Data Protection as a Service is security, both in transit and at rest. Druva inSync offers one of the best security models where if a key is chance it does not affect the current session. Furthermore, we did not see the same dedupe savings with other services.

I mentioned in another area that OneDrive is bundled into our Office 365 accounts - so let me start there. Dropbox will cost you $10 and more per month. Our entire Office 365 account costs $12.50/month for each user - and we get full Office with that. Enough said there. As far as features go - I've found that most of these cloud storage providers all afford similar feature sets as far as sync clients; apps and addons; storage space; etc. - so choosing one or the other really goes to the needs of the company and of course - what's in place already. If your company uses Google apps - Dropbox might make more sense because of tighter integrations. However - if you already use Office 365 in some iteration, OneDrive is already baked in.

Return on Investment

Druva inSync

  • Anytime a user does his/her own restore it has saved his or her own time in not having to redo the lost changes made and it doesn't involve IT staff to do a restore for them or to try looking for or recovering the lost/deleted/corrupted file. This savings in money and time spent is apparent, numerous and possibly priceless.
  • Druva is an affordable product; it's per user cost is acceptable and is affordable for even small businesses

  • One Drive has made it possible to have mobile offices, while keeping files synced.
  • One Drive has saved the need for external document backups as the could is used.
  • One Drive has made it possible to move forward with presentations even if a flash drive was left behind.
