Informatica Integration Cloud

Informatica Cloud is a great tool for use when data must be formatted consistently. Once configured, it is very robust and reliable. It is also well-suited for an organization without a robust IT staff to maintain a full server infrastructure. It offers a cost-effective approach to high-quality data integration for even the largest organizations. Organizations without staff experienced in data analytics may find it challenging to take advantage of the more complex results of this tool.

Talend Data Integration

Talend Data Integration is easy to use and learn. Talend Data Integration can perform bulk data migrations of up to a few million records without any issues. We have not tried it or had use case which required more than a few million records at a time. It works particularly well with databases and CRM software.

Pros

Informatica Integration Cloud

  • Once the secure connection is established it’s quite easy to operate and create new jobs. The controls are simple, and we appreciate the fact there are not a lot of complex fine-tunings required. Navigation is also easy, and we enjoy the ability to open multiple tabs in the browser to work on multiple projects.
  • The monitoring functionality works well to help track the progress of the jobs, again, without too much complication. In a fast dev environment, speed is essential and we quickly seeing the status/progress of jobs as well as any errors if the jobs fail helps us maintain speed.
  • The web interface is a lot easier to interact with than the client/on-prem version. Putting much of the heavy lifting of interacting with the tool onto the shoulders of the browser makes it easier to keep multiple sessions open and get in/out quickly without having to VPN into the office.

Talend Data Integration

  • JSON parsing, if you are into highly nested JSON object parsing Talend has the ability to display the structure of JSON and allows you to define the extraction logic in the metadata. Same with XML source.
  • Customization, For mostly all ETL work you will have a component in Talend. And in case you have a very specific requirement you can end up easily designing a custom component that you can code and reuse and share with others.
  • Talend has a connectivity option to almost all the databases (relational or NOSQ)L and sources available. It also has generic JDBC/ ODBC drivers in case you need it.
  • I like the ease of deployment across environment (DEV and PROD) with the use of context variables.

Cons

Informatica Integration Cloud

  • Incremental jobs can run very slowly on large table updates. Incremental jobs do not work at all for Salesforce.com history tables.
  • No real ability to report on what jobs you have set up or the performance of those jobs (failures, number of records copied, etc.).
  • It is only available within the user interface and you basically have to copy paste it from the browser if you want the information.

We use Talend Data Integration day in and day out. It is the best and easiest tool to jump on to and use. We can build a basic integration super-fast. We could build basic integrations as fast as within the hour. It is also easy to build transformations and use Java to perform some operations.

I've never had trouble getting into contact with Informatica's support for technical help. I give it a nine because it does pretty well for mid to enterprise-scale workflows.

Good support, specially when it relates to PROD environment. The support team has access to the product development team. Things are internally escalated to development team if there is a bug encountered. This helps the customer to get quick fix or patch designed for problem exceptions. I have also seen support showing their willingness to help develop custom connector for a newly available cloud based big data solution

Alternatives Considered

Informatica Integration Cloud

We were originally given Informatica Cloud as a bundled piece of software with the Salesforce implementation company we signed up for so we didn't do a lot of detailed searching for competitors. Since then we have seen it go against Mulesoft Anypoint and Zapier. Both were good, but Informatica Cloud just worked so much better for everything we are using and was cheaper.

Talend Data Integration

Talend is much versatile in assimilating various different business use cases. It covers more functionality and is packed with tons of features to explore. It has the ability to fine tune to each project, and not be a one-fits all solution. Problems with Excel, is that it is not suited for large projects, collaboration work. Alteryx is a very costly alternative.

Return on Investment

Informatica Integration Cloud

  • One positive ROI is that Informatica Cloud ensures that data is being imported in the same format each and every time so a user can be confident of data integrity.
  • Secondly, being able to match of certain fields prevents record duplication.

Talend Data Integration

  • Easy to build complex data transformations.
  • Licensing model isn't that flexible.
  • Memory mangement for huge volumes of information. You have to modify ETL designs to handle it properly.
