IntelliJ IDEA

IntelliJ IDEA is fantastic for all things Java. If you're starting or already working on a Java project, look no further than IntelliJ IDEA. If you want Gradle build integration or are using Maven or Apache, IntelliJ IDEA can do it all. It really is a complete development system with countless customization features available.

If you are doing any C#/VB windows applications, you cannot go wrong with Visual Studio. If you are making a desktop application with forms, the designers will be required to get your app looking great.
If you are living in the web development space, you may want to consider something else for the JavaScript/HTML/CSS work. Visual Studio Code does well, but we've recently found WebStorm by JetBrains that works IMMENSELY better for intellisense.

Pros

IntelliJ IDEA

  • Compared to Eclipse, basically it is a easier to learn which results in faster learning curve. Good for small or mid-sized projects. Generally speaking developers can be productive in a short training and use.
  • Very rich plug-in capability, such as out of the box support for version control systems.
  • User friendly interface. Responsive and interactive than other IDE tools.

Visual Studio IDE

  • Ability to add plug-ins that support non-Microsoft solutions (such as PHP and Python).
  • Power to organize and support even large enterprise applications.
  • Well-structured. The built-in organization of VS makes it easy to keep track of complex projects.
  • Intuitive. The controls in VS are easy to find and use.

Cons

IntelliJ IDEA

  • IntelliJ IDEA wins as long as the language is Java. Outside that , e.g., in other languages, it is not so advanced.
  • It is licensed, with a steep licensing cost. All features are not included in the free edition.
  • It is not as light as Eclipse, so in a weak system, it can be a pain.

Visual Studio IDE

  • The updates are breaking sometimes VS permissions. I have set VS to run as administrator, but sometimes after an update, I need to go to executable file and set it again.
  • VS 2017 does not work well sometimes with the MVC 4 applications. It is showing (underlining) errors in code viewer where the errors do not exist. The VS team was not able to fix this.
  • There is no good plugin for SASS compilation and Workbench (available only up to version 2015) does not work very well.
  • VS could be faster, especially when building applications.

VS Code is maturing and has a Scala plugin now. The overall experience with VS Code - for web development at least - is very snappy/fast. IntelliJ feels a bit sluggish in comparison. If that Scala plugin for VS Code is deemed mature enough - we may not bother renewing and resort to the Community Edition if we need it.

VS is the best and is required for building Microsoft applications. The quality and usefulness of the product far out-weight the licensing costs associated with it.

The user interface for IntelliJ Idea is phenomenal. It's got the usual JetBrains interface but it works well to support all Java processes. All in all, it is a solid product and to be expected from JetBrains who creates this integrated development environment software. It allows me to test in the IDE and run other manual workflows automatically such as install packages.

The thing I like the most is Visual Studio doesn't suffer from Microsoft's over eager marketing department who feel they need to redesign the UI (think Office and windows) which forces users to loose large amounts of productivity having to learn software that they had previously known.

Customer support is really good in the case of IntelliJ. If you are paying for this product then, the company makes sure that you will get all the services adequately. Regular update patches are provided to improve the IDE. An online bug report makes it easier for the developers to find the solution as fast as possible. The large online community also helps to find the various solutions to the issues.

The support consists of a forum. The problem with the forum is the categories are poorly designed and only reflect a subset of reality. So often you need to put a specific question in a general section. What makes this bad is your question gets reviewed by only the people who feel like it (it seems). If someone with knowledge of your issue sees your question you are in luck. If not, time to look elsewhere.

This installs just like any other application - its pretty straight forward. Perhaps licensing could be more challenging - but if you use the cloud licensing they offer its as simple as having engineers login to the application and it just works.

Alternatives Considered

IntelliJ IDEA

Against competition I can say about IntelliJ that:
1. It is definitely faster and efficient than other IDEs. Comparing with Eclipse it emerges as a clear winner in terms or raw performance.2. More feature Rich with great support for modern technologies. It has great support for version control, LESS, SAAS, Maven to name but a few.3. A more complete package. Its HTML, CSS, and Javascript editor are better as compared to others. That coupled with packages , features and other small customization make it an overall better package for software development.4. Costlier. This does not need explanation. Other IDEs which I used were open source and hence free. This is costly.5. Has a better UI.

Visual Studio IDE

I used Eclipse and NetBeans when working as a Java developer. Both IDEs are inferior developer experiences with slower performance and downright chaotic user-interfaces. If the nature of the project would allow adoption of Visual Studio over these alternatives, I would highly recommend Visual Studio. While not an option on the products list, I also used XCode for building native iOS apps for iPhone and iPad. XCode is a lot simpler to use, but also has a lot fewer features. Visual Studio is not usually a valid alternative to XCode, so in this case, it's hard to make an apples-to-apples comparison.

Return on Investment

IntelliJ IDEA

  • IDEA significantly speeds up the development lifecycle. Developers can think more about their code and less about what needs to be done at the syntax and filesystem level.
  • IDEA has such a large user base that it's easy to find people for your organisation that can hit the ground running with it.
  • Using a standard code template helps to standardise the code across the team.

Visual Studio IDE

  • Very flexible pricing schemas for licensing allows us to focus on solution development instead of development cost.
  • The integration of tools in a single IDE is better for estimating the budget because it is not necessary to have other licenses.
  • Improves the speed of the development process so the ROI can be faster.
