Likelihood to Recommend

Symantec Endpoint Protection

Because it can be installed/updated via a group policy/patch management software, I think that Symantec Endpoint Protection is best suited for very large environments that need an added layer of protection from malicious attacks. It's probably not well suited for smaller environments that may be using older machines as it seems to take up a lot of resources to scan and run.

Pros

Symantec Endpoint Protection

  • The virus and spyware protection has worked well for us, catching several things and quarantining the items or cleaning them.
  • The virus definitions very rarely fail to update for the users, so I feel confident that my client machines are kept up to date.
  • I like the report I get daily telling me about threats found and action taken without having to login to the console to look it up myself.

Cons

Symantec Endpoint Protection

  • Removing dead clients from the console. This is nearly impossible to do, and makes keeping the console clean a very difficult task.
  • Poorly tested versions are sometimes released that cause serious issues for users. This ranges from browsers malfunctioning to BSOD errors.
  • Malware detection is good but not great. We are not confident in SEP by itself to neutralize malware threats. It's detection rate just isn't high enough for next generation and zero day threats.

Best of Breed. Symantec Endpoint Protection beats all other end point products I have used, tested and seen in presentation at this point in time.

Symantec Endpoint Protection centralized management console provides easy to follow, clean, and modern HTML5 based interface. All functionality required to manage Symantec Endpoint Protection is available and presented through this management interface. The Symantec Endpoint Protection provides many roles out of the box and presents relevant information based on the user role. Symantec Endpoint Protection can benefit from further scripting/automation interface development.

We've used it for years and the software is easy to use. The dashboard is easy to read, and you can easily figure out where to go to troubleshoot or deploy software. Symantec is there for emergencies like backup restoration or file retrieval. It's pretty low maintenance. Symantec is there when your IT infrastructure needs it

I haven't had to use Symantec support for Endpoint that much over the years, but I did when we had to deploy it to the stores. Now deploying to the remote locations ended up being really easy, but I had some questions and issues with using a relay at each store location that support was honestly pretty terrible at helping with. In the end I figured out the problem with my own research and it was simply that I needed to decrease the number of heartbeats sent from the clients since we were deploying to over 10,000 machines which I was surprised that support didn't point out in beginning of talking to them, so I was a little annoyed with that.

Use a third party deployment tool and not the deployment option within the SEP Manager itself.

Alternatives Considered

Symantec Endpoint Protection

Symantec Endpoint Protection stacks up to the competition very nicely. It does have all the features of the competition except the licensing model is a lot cheaper than the other products. For our large scale environment, it allowed us to effectively manage a high volume of machines for a decent cost. It also receives timely updates and the company has a solid reputation for customer service and satisfaction.

Return on Investment

Symantec Endpoint Protection

  • The objective of Symantec Endpoint Protection is to provide protection from viruses and Symantec has done just that.
  • It is definitely a positive ROI. Since implementation, we have had zero infected machines. Symantec is worth every dollar spent.
  • It is very hard to find an Antivirus software that can protect a machine while using very little resources and having very little impact on the end users. Symantec does all of these very good.
