What is Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams combines video conferencing software with team collaboration tools. The communications platform allows MS Office users to conduct conference calls and share files via SharePoint, and join or initiate a group chat.

Microsoft Teams features three tiers of pricing. The first is a subscription-less, free option that offers the same features as the other two tiers but does not offer administration tools like analytics and access to on-premise servers, or support features like 24/7 phone and web support. The second and third tiers are based on the size of your business and its conferencing needs. Its “Office 365 Business Premium” option starts at $12.50 a month per user, with a required annual commitment, and its “Office 365 E3” option for enterprises starts at $20 a month per user, also with a required annual commitment.

Key Features
Meetings: Meet with teams of 10 or 10,000. Host audio, video, and web conferences with anyone inside or outside your organization or go big with live events.

Calling: Its Phone System feature enables PBX capabilities including call control in Office 365 and replaces on-premises PBX. Its calling features are customizable to fit your organization’s unique needs.

  • Stay connected with your teams
  • Document sharing functionality
  • History of the chat and search function
  • Small teams that could be created per project
  • The control functionality could still be improved when you organize a big meeting.
  • The mute function could be improved because sometimes, you just don't want to be interrupted during a presentation or work in progress.
  • The status is sometimes not working properly; you can stay available all night or away even if you are not.

  • Microsoft Teams allows for setting up a virtual meetings very easy.
  • Microsoft Teams allows for sharing team members screens to walk through processes seamless. The team members are able to see it visually which is very helpful.
  • Microsoft Teams allows for files to be store for easy access by team mates. This helps reduce the need to email files back and forth between colleagues.
  • Sometimes gaining access into a meeting can be confusing, whether to select enter meeting via Web or Teams.
  • Microsoft Teams do not work well on certain web browser which can cause meeting entry delays.
  • When using the share screen feature, the person sharing the screens is never certain that everyone can see them sharing. Maybe adding an indicator that the person is now in screen sharing mode may be helpful.

  • Sharing presentations.
  • Contacting colleagues and suppliers formally.
  • Informal discussion on chat and a record of conversation.
  • Better at sharing content e.g. video and audio often not the best quality.
  • Collaboration tools are not well integrated, functionality is limited and simple commands could be improved.
  • Make it easier to transfer or share ownership of a meeting to change the timing, etc.

  • Facilitates intra- and inter-team communication.
  • Provides an easy-to-use feature for documenting meetings and proceedings
  • Provides an excellent chat feature for off-line and sidebar communication
  • Enables users to share their screens easily with other participants
  • Provides a format for document storage, meeting minutes, etc.
  • Hierarchy of files are a bit confusing to users.
  • Adding participants outside of an organization can be challenging.
  • Requires very stable Internet connection.

  • It allows all of the documents for a project to be stored on the cloud and updated in real time, instead of on a network drive where changes are more difficult to track.
  • It allows teams to keep their communication and project files centralized, instead of in disparate places.
  • Navigation within a document set is clunky. For example, clicking "back" never takes you back to the previous screen or one level up, like you'd expect. It takes you back to the main document set. This causes clicking in circles if you are trying to edit multiple documents in a folder.
  • Moving documents from one place to another is also clunky and not intuitive. You cannot move an entire folder, but only a single document at a time. This wastes time.

  • MS Teams is very handy and easy.
  • Screen sharing feature is there for presentations.
  • Screen blur problem when internet connection is slow.
  • Sometimes it does not remind me of meetings. I hope it gets fixed as soon as possible in the future.

  • Audio calls - the quality is VERY good even when there are drops in the video quality and when interacting with multiple locations around the world.
  • Rich text editing - although slightly hidden, it's really good.
  • Integrations with other systems - there are a lot of them. Can contribute to a seamless work experience.
  • Screen sharing with shared control - works really well overall. Remote/shared control does not work with applications that run with "elevated permissions" on Windows.
  • Updates come without notice and we find out about features by chance or through experimentation. Feature rollout for the mobile applications seems to be further ahead than the rollout for desktop and web. This could be because of our organization's approach to managing Teams though.
  • Mandatory Rich text copy-paste by default. Although it works great in a lot of cases, I'd like to see a "paste as plain text" option as it will make my life much easier when the formatting of the pasted text looks horrible in Teams.
  • Fluctuating performance and random crashes. This can be infuriating during a hectic communications-heavy workday. Overall, this is an Electron-based app on desktop and eats a lot of memory.
  • There's a CPU usage spike for the person who starts sharing his/her camera - sometimes this spike can cause other apps or even the entire OS to crash.
  • There are two major tabs - "Chat" and "Teams". Around 90% of my colleagues want to use only one tab and thus ignore all the established channels in the "Teams" tab/section. Instead, they resolve to named (sometimes long-running) ad-hoc chats.
  • Searching for an old message in the history yields somewhat random results so it's better to stick to recent communication.

  • Allows you to set up teams for specific projects as well as a team for the entire department to keep everyone in contact
  • Great Help Section and training available through the app.
  • Very good Chat feature
  • Capability to host / coordinate Conference Calls
  • Easy to use Team Meetings
  • Calendar Feature to help keep track of your schedule.
  • Video quality was unstable at times but may have been a reflection of connection speeds more than of the capabilities of Teams.
  • Can be a memory hog and cause computer performance issues at times. Be sure you have plenty of RAM on your computer to avoid issues if you plan to keep Team open at all times.
  • Need a more intuitive way to coordinate the Calendar function in Teams with external calendars so you don't have to coordinate between several different calendars.

  • Meetings.
  • Daily and speedy communication.
  • File Storage.
  • Comfortable UX/UI.
  • File Storage is a little clunky for new users, there was a learning curve in understanding the difference between Channels, Teams, Files, and where to communicate. The UI could be improved.
  • The connection of the file storage with Sharepoint gets tricky, where if we edit a certain file in one location, either it sometimes mirrors the action on the other platform, but sometimes it doesn't. It created a lot of issues.

  • Online meeting is easier to setup and join, and video conference is better in quality.
  • Teams have channels [that] divide the groups and each group communicates and shares on their group, this is a more organized way to communicate.
  • Teams integrates well with the rest of office 365 tools, such as One-Drive
  • In my experience, the most annoying thing in Teams is when you want to set up your audio input and output before the conference calls, especially if you have more than one audio option, such as external speakers and a headset.
  • As an administrator, I see that Teams have good security policies, but these policies bring some complexity, for instance, if one user in our company needs to share some resources with [another] party outside our domain, he can not do so, until the admin allows it.
  • Teams integrate well in the Microsoft environment, but outside of that, you would find that you have limited usage.
